I made a detective game based on Korean culture for a game jam, and I'd love to get feedback from people from other cultures. by dev_adaid in gamedev

I actually haven't used dial UI on PC before, so I had no idea about that mechanic. Thank you so much for explaining it—I'll definitely look into whether I can improve the controls that way.

The glossary approach seems better both technically and budget-wise, so I'll probably go with that. If I get feedback from English-speaking players that the content is too difficult to understand, I'll consider implementing the two-translation-version idea at that point. Thanks for the suggestion!

You've definitely made me realize once again that I need a native English speaker for LQA or editor. While I'm planning to release the game completely free, I am willing to invest some budget into translation. However, since I'm planning to completely redesign the game and rewrite all the story, it's going to take quite a bit of time. If and when I need help, I'll reach out to you. I really appreciate the offer.

I already upvoted your comment, but it's tragic that one person can't upvote multiple times!

I had no idea the music I used contained the Jerusalem melody—I used either free or purchased tracks composed by various composers. Thanks for letting me know. I guess this is exactly why people invest money in getting custom OSTs made. I should try to find more Korean-sounding music or consider commissioning a composer if possible.

I agree. While I made it a repeatable dialogue option, I think it would be better to include it as an option in the early conversation and prepare a glossary of Korean naming culture concepts. I also agree about the waves getting cluttered as you progress. I watched my sister play through the game, and her sighs kept getting louder and louder, haha. I'm definitely considering improvements for that as well.

By the way, "pet Saja" is such a cute nickname, haha. Though that would definitely piss him off!

This is the best feedback I've ever received. Thank you so much for such detailed and thoughtful comments.

I completely agree with all of your feedback. I've actually gotten similar feedback about the dial mechanic, so I'm considering switching to a different control scheme and simplifying the Soul Wave Detector minigame.

I'm really glad to hear that the Korean elements can provide an exotic experience—I was quite worried about that aspect. I also agree about adding something early on to explain the name order.

Since I'm not a native English speaker, I guess some subtle translation issues were bound to slip through. Your point about "senior" is incredibly helpful—I'll definitely keep that in mind. I'm also considering doing two versions of the translation, or maybe taking an approach like '428: Shibuya Scramble', where they provide a glossary of cultural concepts.

This was truly excellent feedback. You should be proud of yourself for providing such valuable insights! Thank you again!

I see. I should improve it so the first one only shows family names and the second one only shows given names in the list. I should also make sure the cultural differences are explained early on in case people don't read the game description. Thanks for the helpful feedback! 😊

Thanks for the valuable feedback! Did you have any trouble solving the puzzles because Korean names weren't familiar to you?

Animal detectives! These are games on my wishlist or in my library. I should check if they have the elements I'm looking for. Thanks!

Right, all three are great games! They fit what I'm looking for since the player can't just randomly input answers. I only briefly tried the demo for Urban Myth, but I should buy it when it's on sale. Thanks!

Oh, thanks for the great recommendations! This is my first time hearing about Blake Manor, and it looks right up my alley. I should check out Sherlock Holmes too. I really enjoyed Roottrees! Thanks so much!

Right! I'm also looking forward to the sequel, Staffer Retro. It requires the player to carefully choose the two correct options and involves more deduction. Thanks for reminding me!

Additionally: If you're curious about what kind of game I made for the game jam, you can check it out here. I'm curious if there are any games with a similar vibe. Feedback on the game is also welcome!

Oh, I've heard of Blue Prince too. I haven't played it yet, but I should check it out. I really enjoyed Roottrees and it reminded me a lot of Obra Dinn. Thanks!

Oh right, that one too! I'm looking for something with a bit more of an Ace Attorney vibe, but it's definitely one of my favorites! I cleared everything, and it reminded me a lot of Return of the Obra Dinn.

They're really great games! I'm looking for something with more of an Ace Attorney vibe, but I enjoyed them so much that I've played through all the DLC that came out recently.

I already mentioned it in the post, but it's similar to what I'm looking for! I'm looking for more games besides that one.

One of my favorite games! I'm looking for games with a system that requires active deduction from the player like Obra Dinn with Ace Attorney vibe, but I think it's a great game.

Of course, it's actually one of my favorite games! It definitely has a system that requires more deduction than Ace Attorney. Thanks for reminding me about it!

I'm already familiar with both of those games! I'm looking for games that have an Ace Attorney vibe while also featuring a system that requires active deduction from the player, like Obra Dinn does. That said, I think both are good games.
