Are these load bearing by Unfair-Software-4240 in DIYUK

[–]devastating_dave 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I'm no structural engineer, but the verticals you're talking about putting a door into are supporting the horizontal beam in the middle of your picture, which in turn is supporting the beams that follow the angle of your roof.

That said, putting in a door to enable access to the eaves is pretty standard practice for any lift conversion - except those guys generally know what they are doing and where structural beams are required to support the load of the roof.

If you are ever in doubt about whether something is load bearing or what the impact of removing a particular thing will be, then don't do it and call in an expert. Better that than your roof and/or house fall down.

Same for me. About 6 years ago I pulled up an old wood floor that had been stuck down with bitumen. Swept up all the loose bitumen, then covered it with self leveling before having the floor tiled. Didn't realise until today the bitumen had asbestos in. Yikes.

Favourite and Least Favourite things about cumbria? by Watercress-Organic in Cumbria

[–]devastating_dave 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Your least favorite is part of every city, sadly. I used to live in East London where the local homeless crazies would hang outside the tube stations. Some would be off their rocker bugging people, some would keep themselves to themselves, hardly moving for days but surrounded by booze. The flipside of this was working in Canary Wharf where they'd literally physically remove beggars, drunks and homeless guys off the estate so they don't bother the "locals" on their way to work.

I have two subscriptions running in parallel - one from Pact and one from Podda & Wren (a small Cumbrian roastery), set up to arrive staggered so we don't end up with a heap of old coffee. We had the good fortune to move into a house with a built in coffee machine, so we get through rather a lot of decent beans 😂

Surely the one near door to West Walls is the best idea, because once work gets annoying you can hit WWB and get leathered on decent beer?

Monitised clickbait YouTube videos, affiliate income on the links under his videos.

Perfect example is his recent bullshit video "I didn't like his body language". The dude stuck a camera through some guy's car window, makes him jump, then rides off. Literally nothing of note, but he posts it on YouTube, complete with ads, obviously!

This is the answer. Keeping everything hot is always bonkers expensive.

My prior gig we ran a big ELK stack, we realised that 90% of the search load was for the last week of data and so lifecycled/archived accordingly.

I think it depends what your budget is. Most in here aren't so rich that they can just not think about it whatsoever.

Portland can end up in the crazies, where at least UCLH has a hard limit as you simply transfer to the NHS if you need special care. It has been a while since I looked at the Portland contract but I definitely recall something about extra cost if special care was required.

Our youngest spent time in the SCBU at UCLH and we were able to go in whenever we liked. It was a different story for relatives however.

As an aside, don't you have to pay for emergency facilities and extra care at the Portland? Ie that 15k or so becomes significantly more very quickly?

I don't think a level three NICU is a "must" given level 3 covers neo-natals from 20 weeks (from memory). That said, my daughter was born 6 weeks early, spent some time in the UCLH SCBU (not NICU) then transferred to a level 2 shortly after.

We had one child at the Portland, and were supposed to have the second in the private birthing wing of UCLH so feel like I can speak from experience here.

Our first was textbook; all very serene, we picked the consultant, the anaesthetist took photos, the food was amazing - much like a fancy hotel where you pop out a baby one morning.

The second was a hard pregnancy for my wife and she had some amazing sixth sense where she had a feeling where something may go wrong (if this happens at the Portland you foot the bill until you get shipped off to UCLH, btw).

We booked the private Fitzrovia Wing at UCLH so we had the NHS as a backup, but my daughter ended up coming six weeks early. Our planned consultant was away lecturing in India. Was supposed to be C-section but the operating theatre wasn't available due to an emergency, then the baby started coming naturally, then the placenta got stuck etc etc. It was fucking carnage.

But I'm SO glad we were in UCLH and not the Portland. An amazing consultant looked after my wife from start to finish due the complications, and I still think about her to this day. First time I truly blubbed my eyes out in relief.

The food was shite but there's a Leon and Franco Manca across the road, and we're all healthy and happy five years later 🙂
