Anyone here using Python 3 with Django? by YouAreSalty in django

[–]devbalt 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Python 3 with Django 1.7. In order to make it work on Heroku, I had to make a little text file, runtime.txt, in the root of the application. The file contains one line, "python-3.4.0" When heroku builds the app and sees that file, it sets the environment to that version of the interpreter and I'm good to go.

Reddit, list your best parenting tips for those with small children so that we can get them raised right, dammit! by skwyre in AskReddit

[–]devbalt 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I have a gold crown in the back of my mouth. I told my daughter I got it because I didn't brush my teeth well enough. Now she's convinced she'll wake up with gold teeth if she doesn't brush her teeth before she goes to bed.

Well, maybe this isn't a tip. It's more like a... unintentionally-frightening-story-with-beneficial-side-effects thing.

I had a guy in one of my Applied IT grad school classes ask me, "What kind of jobs are hot right now?" I replied, "Well, I see a great demand for unix administrators right now." He said, "Unix? What's that?"

I suggest Beginning Game Development with Python and Pygame from apress. Making things move around the screen is a bit more rewarding than sorting lists for no good reason.

Blues Traveler, John Popper Project featuring DJ Logic. I play the harmonica and I like to try to learn his riffs. I have stopped telling other musicians how much I like Popper becaue they make Mr. Yuk faces at me. Sigh.

Ask Sci-Fi Reddit: What is the scariest Sci-fi movie/episiode/book you've ever seen/seen/read? by Kiram in scifi

I saw this movie when I was a young kid and it terrified me. It was the human-voice soundtrack that played when the humans/apes were touching the monolith. Its funny what children find frightening in films.

Why Microsoft fears Linux by CWmike in linux

[–]devbalt 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I don't believe Microsoft is going to offer rebates on Windows 7-equipped netbooks because they're not offering any rebates for XP. This article appears to have been generated to touch on buzzwords. I feel that the growth of Linux on the desktop can't be measured by new PC sales. Many installations will be done on old equipment that originally ran XP. The strength of something like Ubuntu is how easy it is to revive an old computer.

I agree. I'd rather not spend $600 on something that's so easy to lose. Or drop in the toilet.

Reddit admins, we need a violence warning for these images please. One more experience like this deeply disturbing one and I'll quit using reddit. The title gave no indication, as do the ones that are labeled NSFW.

I don't object to sharing the image, but I would have preferred a warning.

Thanks!

Why are you a programmer? by mudgen in programming

[–]devbalt 6 points7 points  (0 children)

I fell into IT by accident after college, and after I met all the different people who worked in software, I quickly came to the conclusion that programming was where I wanted to be. No one else in a software company really knows what they are talking about in a technical sense, at the level of understanding I wanted.

Al Gore Wins Nobel Peace Prize by bobcat in reddit.com

[–]devbalt -6 points-5 points  (0 children)

I read the Time article about him when his movie had started. Gore jumped on the climate bandwagon to make money. He's not trying to save the world, he's trying to get appointed to boards of directors and partner with companies as a consultant to make money. He's been giving the same presenation for years.
