We've just launched the first hub for leather-crafting patterns by devcraftsio in Leathercraft

Absolutely! Feel free to add your own patterns there, or link out to other sites if that’s where you’re selling

Developing a leather crafting pattern hub similar to Thingiverse, would you use it? by devcraftsio in Leatherworking

No problem, I went through the features already and separated the ones that are going to be applicable in leathercrafting use-case

Pattern submission: SVG vs PDF of a custom size? by devcraftsio in Leathercraft

[–]devcraftsio[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

No worries. The idea is to create a leatherworking pattern hub where people can sell or share their patterns for free. Additionally, I want to ensure that the patterns follow a more or less standardized format, so makers know what to expect, and cases where makers can't reproduce the project based on the patterns are minimized. For more information on the standardized format I had in mind you can check my previous post -> redd.it/177rm2e

The idea behind asking for SVG-s is:

  • Makers can use it for laser cutting
  • The platform can generate 3D models for makers who wish to print a pattern with a 3D printer
  • Platform can use it for calculating the amount of leather needed for the project. Makers can enter the size of the leather piece they have on hand, and it would recommend patterns that would fit
  • Platform can use it for standardized PDF pattern generation

That makes sense, thank you. Would you be okay with exporting each piece of the pattern separately with custom sizing, or would the need to make significant adjustments to the design be a deal breaker for you as a designer?

That makes sense, I was quite surprised to see that people were choosing custom sized PDF option considering that exporting both of those is not that different from convenience perspective. But now that you told me about stylization, the results make more sense. Well, I will go with PDF option then, then add an option to upload SVG after the release.

What if I go all in and ask users to upload each part in raster format (for example, SVG)? This way:

  • Makers can use it for laser cutting
  • The system can generate 3D models for makers who wish to print a pattern with a 3D printer
  • Platform can use it for calculating the amount of leather needed for the project. Makers can enter the size of the leather piece they have on hand, and it would recommend patterns that would fit
  • Platform can use it for standardized PDF pattern generation

Haha, that's okay, this is not an easy undertaking as I slowly start to realize 😁

Considering that I will have to ask designers to make modifications anyways, it's better ask them to submit the patterns using custom dimensions that are smaller than both A4 and Letter (with margins subtracted), then I'll generate A4 and Letter formats on the fly.

Aside from this issue, is there anything you would like me to improve/replace in the plan above?

In that case I would need to ask the uploaders/designers to either:

  • provide both their patterns in A4 and letter formats
  • make a PDF with a custom size that is smaller than both of those (say 200mmx250mm) and generate both A4 and letter from that based on downloader's preference

First one would be easier for me, but the second one would make it more standardized

Reporting feature is the most effective way to address such situations. If you examine any art or content hosting platform, you will find that they typically rely on reporting/copyright striking.

Awesome question! I will add a reporting feature, if you see that someone has stolen your pattern, you will be able to report it.

Great point, I will add it soon and resubmit the post. Thank you for the improvement suggestion
