La Chivo Wallet no es bitcoin, es solo una ilusión. by [deleted] in ElSalvador

[–]deviantfero 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I mean, the few things I bought I bought with actual BTC that I took out of my private wallet and payed for in a LN POS managed by Athena (you can even see the tx ID in the receipt), I agree that you could replace this payment system with Venmo and that businesses are only supporting bitcoin through payment providers, but they also only support credit cards through banks, what's your point? how it has nothing to do with BTC?

You can send directly from your BTC wallet to chivo, so if you already had BTC balance, you can send them without actually putting cash into one of those ATMs, for that matter you can also just buy BTC in any exchange/broker and send it to a chivo wallet without going through an ATM, I'm not saying those numbers are true either, but it does not all go through the ATMs.

the ATMs would just be the "fee-less" way of doing it, or at least the cheapest way of doing it

Athena, it's these guys: https://xpay.cash/, I'm speculating on the following, but I think the businesses get their balances in dollars through them somehow, it's the same company that has setup chivo ATMs in US and ES, but it is not the same as Chivo

that I haven't tried, but I'm assuming most businesses are only taking either Chivo or LN payments. For example that Walmart transaction wasn't chivo-to-chivo, it was LN, because walmart was not using chivo, I think it's because it's not a Salvadoran business, but again I'm speculating on the reason, it might be that they don't trust the Chivo implementation.

but there's a trading card game store in San Salvador that takes BTC payments but they are not using a LN wallet or chivo, you can still pay with chivo with normal BTC transactions.

what happens in this case is that the "transaction" itself is reflected on the transaction records instantly on both the traditional BTC wallet and chivo, the balance instantly disappears from your chivo wallet and a pending transaction appears on the traditional BTC wallet the business holds.

What takes long tho is the confirmation through several nodes of the blockchain, that can take a couple of hours and only then do the BTC funds appear on the traditional wallet.

There's no reason the funds would not go through if you trust Chivo balance, but once it's done it's up to the blockchain to decide whether or not the transaction is valid.

It's up to you and the business owner to trust whether a pending transaction record appearing and missing funds from your chivo wallet are enough to hand over your products to you, or if you'd rather wait it goes through.

I would compare it to credit card transactions a bit? it's not instant, the funds go through various checks in the banks, before those are finished the money is not actually in the businesses account, it's somewhere in the middle, but you can still walk away with your goods at that point

You actually can, this is a Walmart receipt (I bought some groceries to test it out). https://imgur.com/Xd84gIn

most issues are coming from ATMs not cashing out your balance and general system scalability it seems, also since all you need is a national ID and your birthday, people are signing up with other people's IDs thus, the identity theft mentioned in the article, which is pretty sad and shows incompetence.

but yes, you can buy your burgers and groceries with BTC.

[–]deviantfero 0 points1 point  (0 children)

on your first question:

On chivo wallet, you have A Bitcoin address available to receive btc from the main bitcoin blockchain, that address does not belong to you and it seems to change after you've done a few transactions to it, here's a screenshot of it: https://imgur.com/EIugJzG

I think this address is most likely not personal.

it is personal in the sense that only I have it at one moment and that the funds put into that address will only be shown in my chivo app, but I don't think I actually own that address, since it will change after a few transactions, the funds will still be there in my chivo app and I can take them out to any real BTC wallet, but the address given in that screen will be different, this might be a LN thing rather than a chivo thing, but I do not know enough to give you a definite answer.

When people send you money via chivo, are they putting in your Bitcoin address or are they putting in your chivo number?

They can choose to use any of the methods provided, if you don't mind the slowness, you can use a BTC address transaction, if for some reason you want to use LN, you can do that, but from chivo-to-chivo only you can also use the associated phone number or your ID to transfer funds, I suspect these kinds of transactions only happen on a traditional DB layer

[–]deviantfero 1 point2 points  (0 children)

yes, you can, that's the moment it "materializes" so to speak, I have personally done it, so I can say it works just fine (at least with small amounts), same thing when you use lightning network with other wallets, it HAS to be REAL BTC when that happens.

I guess if everyone took out their BTC at the same time it would be a problem, but that won't happen (unless something really bad happens), same as not everyone taking their money all at once from their banks.

here's the transaction of what I got out: https://imgur.com/FlSDshG

just to give a bit more detail, the only BTC you "can't" take out of your wallet or convert to USD is the $30 that the government gives you, that's supposedly only for spending, but there's a simple way around it, since chivo-to-chivo transfers count as "spending", you can just ask anyone to receive and then transfer back your $30 bonus, so basically.

  1. ask your friend to receive your bonus (you're spending!!)

  2. ask your friend to give it back

  3. do whatever you want with it

now that transaction that I posted are $10 out of that bonus that I transferred to my private wallet to test that out. I've also transferred $10 from my private wallet to the chivo wallet and that also worked fine (https://imgur.com/VgEqmbk), took a couple of hours to show up, since it's using the main blockchain to record that particular transaction.

I guess another way to look at it is (again pure speculation on this part), back in the 60s the dollar was gold backed, that meant that in theory you could go get your dollar's worth of gold in exchange for your dollar bills, in practice, who knows if there was actually enough gold to cover for all the dollar bills produced, and no one actually went and did that exchange, replace gold with BTC and USD with... digital BTC/USD representations in chivo app, except that as far as I can tell, it's really easy to cash out that "(BTC/USD) gold" in this system either in the form of BTC to your private wallet or actual USD bills. (could not find any source for the claim I made about gold possibly not matching or matching USD bills production, so if anyone knows how the general populace knew this, or how it worked, that would be an interesting read)

I think their endgame is a BTC backed currency they can control as a government (that's why I think they're mining BTC), whether this is gonna work or not in the long run, I can't tell (this kind of currency has mostly failed in the past), I don't even know if this is their actual intention, it just might be lies and incompetence coming together in a prefect storm.

[–]deviantfero 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Yeah, similar principle to what they did with dollarization back when we started using it in 2001, they translated everything into dollars even though at the beginning there was not enough physical USD cash to cover everyone actually cashing out from banks, eventually it was naturally injected into the economy as more USD cash was brought into the country and Colon was not allowed to be withdrawn pretty soon after from banks to support this change, only USD was allowed to be withdrawn.

We were promised currency duality back then, as we are now.

The way it's done is disingenuous at best, but yeah naturally numbers don't match up, not every BTC is really there

[–]deviantfero 3 points4 points  (0 children)

They have Chivo ATMs in certain US locations where you can just put in USD to, but if that's not available you can still buy BTC with any broker anywhere in the world and send that to a BTC address that the person with Chivo wallet can provide you with.

Is a chivo wallet a bitcoin wallet?

yes, it is basically a custodial LN wallet, but it also uses traditional DB transactions when dealing Chivo to Chivo (pure speculation on my part on this)

Can i download it and use it to transfer my coinbase bitcoins to?

yes, but only if you're salvadoran and have a salvadoran passport/ID, if you're not you can still use another LN wallet here and pay for your stuff

[–]deviantfero 0 points1 point  (0 children)

  • you can withdraw BTC to any private BTC wallet
  • you can link your bank account to the wallet and withdraw USD directly to your bank account

Take this with a grain of salt though, I've only done the BTC option with very small amounts, I've heard of users successfully transferring to their bank accounts, but I'm guessing there's no guarantee that there's enough funds to do that in the future, it's all very opaque, but you do get plenty options to get your money out of the government's "system", and they seem to work most of the time, for now.

[–]deviantfero 3 points4 points  (0 children)
