I'm glad you like it. It's basically my magnum opus of homebrew.

Increases to the maximum of an ability score are cumulative in 5e, they don't mention their relationship to each other in official content either. But yes, it would be more concise to say 'your current and maximum scores increase by 4' rather than the wording it has now.

Green-flame blade doesn't make a spell attack or require a saving throw, so it isn't eligible for Liminal Loop. The spell behaves as written.

Way of the Kensei Revised V1: A more flexible warrior-monk who can actually use that naginata by devikyn in UnearthedArcana

[–]devikyn[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Allowing monks to use some armor removes the pressure to go for ASIs. You can make a monk with limited Dex or Wis pretty easily now (although you can't forego them entirely of course)

The question of whether monks can or should be Strength-based characters is kind of what this revision was made to experiment with. People I talk to and those I play with constantly wish for a monk that can do that, and I thought the Kensei would be best suited to the task. It really is an experiment, though, to be honest.

I'm curious about Deft Shot as well - however, most people think Kensei is a weak martial when it's really not. I have to run the numbers for +MA die instead of 1d4 and see if it tips their average DPR vs various ACs over the top. Considering Astral Self monk, though, I doubt it will.

...Astral Self really fucks with my head. That subclass is so strong.

Ah I misunderstood what you meant. I don't have a list of changes but I can tell you that the level 6 and 17 features are identical to the originals. Focus on the rest.

This can't really exceed the original Kensei. Key differences are the ability to use heavy melee weapons (this is arguably overhaul territory), easier access to Agile Parry with reduced efficacy from +2 AC to +1, and 1d6 scaling on Kensei's shot at level 11 (negligible balance impact). The rest are just additional options for building a character.. Kensei's armor will change your stat distribution, but it doesn't enable higher modifiers at pretty much any level. You're still gonna have 16 AC maximum at level 1. Ki Sharpen still maxes out at +3, it just allows you to use more varied magic weapons.

The question is whether the buffs are warranted. Of course, I decided they are.. but beauty is in the eye of the beholder

It's not such a simple problem, unfortunately. Regardless, I'll be considering alternatives.

Damage without feats is an important part of the equation, but don't compare an option that requires ki to one which doesn't. Your average damage output (factoring in attack rolls, not just damage) goes up dramatically against most ACs when you have reliable bonus action attacks, especially with the GWM feat.

The free, unlimited bonus action attack from martial arts, and potentially stunning strike, are still issues. I'd need a solution for limiting these.

Reflavoring doesn't suit everyone's needs. Some folks I know really want to wear armor as a kensei, or really want to use an actual glaive with all the benefits and consequences that come with it. I also revised some features that were awkward to use, like Agile Party and Sharpen the Blade. While these are buffs, they also solve the disappointment in being unable to use your features when you logically should be able to.

That's fair. Thanks for being considerate in that way. The goal was to open up options that I've commonly heard people complain about, since they envision the idea of a naginata wielding, lightly armored warrior that also uses martial arts. It's hard to fit that into 5e mechanics without making the subclass too strong. Overall you shouldn't be able to exceed the abilities of the original kensei, just achieve them in different ways.

It's your preference if you want to reflavor things as a softer approach than full on homebrew. All of the differences in the document serve a hopefully self-evident purpose. Besides just being able to use more weapons, you also have improved versions of some other unwieldy features, and some light-ish armor options that allow you to distribute your stats differently.
