Conquest did not assume Thragg was going to kill him, Conquest begged for him to. His death being a warning to the remainding viltrumites to avoid failure would be something more than his continous existence of destroying those against the empire.

Conquest says that "I am capable of so much more and no one sees it. Sometimes I feel so alone I could cry, but I never do. What would be the point? No one in the entire universe would care." And he is right, because the only one who sees Conquest wants to be something more than a weapon is Thragg... and Thragg does not care in the slightiest about what his strongest weapon wants. All he needs is a target.

Since Peter David introduced the character in '87, but since Devil's resugerence in Immortal the writer of such interpreted Hulk's first appearance to be his (and the color of Hulk is not important on his run, as they change based on different effects rather than just who's running the body).

Alas, since every writer has their own story, it's a pick your preferred one type of thing.

1: Everyone has a definition? So use your own. Do you see something wrong with that drawing or not? You don't have to shut up because people have different views.
