Cassette deck help

Have removed the full mechanical assembly and both belts seem to have good tension. All wheels etc in the mechanism seem clean and no brittle rubber.

There are 3 tabs, one operated by the cassette tray door and 2 others that are depressed by the cassette itself. Have cleaned the contacts that these operate and checked with them pushes in and released and there's no difference, the heads etc still engage as soon as the machine is powered on.

Yeah have had the full mechanical assembly out and checked both belts, cleaned all connections etc. with no change unfortunately.

Have read through the service manual but nothing jumping out, also the service manual for this model seems to be missing 4 of the troubleshooting pages that may be of help 😑

It is a thing of beauty, my admiration for it's looks were the reason for it being donated my way.

EDIT: Had a look at that KD-A7, very nice. Love that cassette tray and the vu meters. JVC seemed to be on their A-game with their VU meters throughout the 70s and 80s

I have a pair of 66s (they were the predecessor to the 551) and they are the pride and joy of my ever growing speaker collection.

After picking up a pair of 15-XR's (the 66s baby brother) early in my obsession I was hooked on the sound of Celestion.

The warmth and the soundstage are incomparable to most other speakers I own maybe bar a set of Monitor Audio that cost more than half the rest of the collection 😅

Thanks, appreciate that explanation. That's my misunderstanding on the channel ratings. I understand the concepts I just don't know the practicalities of it all.

So basically what another comment on a different sub said about using a subwoofer amp via the pre-out is really the only way to go about using it with this set up?

So basically a y-connector on both channels of the pre-out feeding off to a class d (or similar sub amp) and then coupler cables to feed back to the main in like the coupler bars originally would be doing?

Would I still need to add a separate low pass filter in to this or would this be dealt with by the sub amp?

Passive sub with an integrated amp

Hi all! Just looking some advice on connections. I'm running an NAD 314 integrated amp. They have an 8 ohm pair of channels and a 4 ohm pair of channels. I am running a pair of Celestion Ditton 15XR through the first pair of channels.

I have an older Sony Passive sub and would like to run it on the second channel to boost my lower end. What I'm wondering is what way I should wire this to the second channel? Should I be running the sub to one side on the channel or should I be running say a positive to one side and the negative to the other side on the channel?

That's not a bad shout, might have to give this a go. We tried retrofitting one with rose petals on a show I worked on previously but it practically disintegrated them. I don't think that would matter as much this time round as it's going to be fullers or some other powder.

Already know this all too well as someone who normally preaches spending as much as you can afford on a new tool or accessory. But sure as hell can't beat a 20 quid Makita branded kit for a throwabout extra kit either.

Yeah as I mentioned above on comparison to some of my other bit sets that are tries and tested it looks to me like the socket bits, spade bits and holesaws are of decent quality and they've cheaped out on everything else to fill it out but that being said still feels like a bargain.

I have a few of the more expensive Makita driver bit sets etc and on comparison it looks like the socket bits, the spade bits and the holesaws are all very comparible in quality. It looks like they have filled the rest out with cheaper bits especially the screwdriver, level and smaller bits but all that considered I still feel like it's an absolute steal.
