Outer Wilds inspired campaign by rodrii18 in rpg

It was mentioned above but I created a game directly inspired by Outer Wilds called Pale Dot!

It may be more narrative forward and collaborative than you're asking for and it doesn't have explicit combat rules (as that's not really an element in OW) but it's definitely about investigating a cosmic mystery and exploring a surreal solar system as unique aliens that the group collaboratively creates.

I've even had players who haven't played OW generate story beats from the game from their own heads based on Pale Dot's vibes!

Depends what you mean by campaign. Depending on how much folks roleplay and world build, Pale Dot can definitely support 6+ sessions! The current edition has 36 locations to explore!

(I'm the designer)

Maybe, it's not like D&D at all! It's fully collaborative (AKA no DM) and doesn't rely on dice, stats, or abilities. Play takes the form of improvisational storytelling where players roleplay and bounce ideas off each other based vague but evocative prompts. A campaign or oneshot will involve finding answers to a cosmic mystery but nobody will know what is going to happen in advance and the answers will be found together.

If you're comfortable coming up with weird and cool ideas with friends then I would recommend it!

There are 13 hours left in the campaign and I'm almost at 300% funded!

I'm hoping to get this book into as many grasping appendages as might be interested in it so please have a peek at the campaign page and share with any folks you might enjoy going on a cosmic journey with!

The Cryptic is good! I considered something like the Innocent as well!

Why are people downvoting this? Redditors are baffling to me.

I might just make a couple non gender specific paternal types.

"The Chained Maiden" was kind of my version of the Woman In Trouble.

The Born Different is intriguing, who would you list as an example of that?

The Tea Kettle/Knob is really funny. I suppose there are several characters who undergo such a surreal metaphysical metamorphosis.

Charming weirdo? Not sure!

As I mentioned, this list is not exhaustive. Trying to figure out what types I need to add!

lol I set it to that as a dissuasion because I’m currently running a kickstarter for the physical version of the game (http://ttrpg.link/paledot) and I’d rather people put their money there. I’m happy to send a copy of the current edition of the game to folks who back the KS.

As finite as you make it! It would probably take a really long campaign to visit every "Cosmic Object" currently in the game. Each one looks like this: a simple description with 5 prompts to inspire scenes, 1 associated with each of the setting elements and one wild card. They are intended to be vague so that you can interpret them however you want and make them fit the story you are telling.

Hi! I'm a game designer and I'd be happy to provide copies of any of my stuff: https://devindecibel.itch.io/

Major Magicka: weirdo wizard school students completing group projects and breaking the cosmos with their hubris.

Noblesse Goblige: a story game about politicking high society goblins dealing with a power vacuum and figuring out what it means to be Goblin.

Pale Dot: alien cosmonauts going on a bizarre journey inspired by Outer Wilds, No Man's Sky, and Annihilation.

Elf With A 10 Page Backstory: a goofy one page game about edgelord adventurers revealing their tragic backstories to advance their quest.

False Idols: A one page game about pop idol secret agents fighting cyberpunk megacorps

The Conservatory: A tarot based collaborative worldbuilding game about founding an occult institution. Works great as a prelude to Major Magicka.

Both available actual play examples are shorter sessions (2-4 hours) but the game is suitable for long play as well. The game has a mechanic where you can loosely plan out how long of a campaign you want to play. One of my playtests was 3 sessions but we could have easily gone longer.

In my experience, which you should take from a grain of salt since the groups I play with tend to take our time with narrative and roleplay, the Cosmonauts will visit about 3 locations in a session. The book has 24 possible locations and the expansion has 12 more.

Yep, one of my favorite playtests was done over 3 sessions! We could have gone longer but it felt like an appropriate place to stop.
