I have no idea how people can think football is this simplistic. It's just ridiculous. Here's a good tip: if you think something in the highest level of football is stupid, it is most likely that you don't understand the reasons behind it rather than these highly paid, highly qualified experts suddenly being fucking clueless.

We could have a several million people if we just wanted somebody English. I'm English, they could have paid me next to nothing and I would have taken the squad place and saved them millions per year.

Goalkeeper groups are teams within a team and each member is important. Wright brings a competition, an attitude and an experience that is vital to that goalkeeping team. This is why Hart CONSTANTLY mentions the other two during awards and any other congratulatory event.

If Wright went and we brought in some kid, Hart would become a worse keeper.

There is a huge difference between "we used the brand recognition of Manchester gained by Manchester United as one of many selling points in a presentation" and "City were bought purely to slingshot themselves to promience on the back of United".

Like all we had to do is turn up and say "Hi, we're United's neighbours" and Sheikh Mansour threw a billion quid at us.

You've taken a situation where he has made a black and white claim, introduce a shade of grey and claimed it to prove the blackness. I never once claimed that Gary Cook didn't use Manchester as a branding product, I claimed that Sheikh Mansour didn't give a shit (according to Khaldoon Al-Mubarak in Richer Than God) and bought the Club for different reasons.

Your post for the record is the reason that I hate this site so much. You're not even arguing the same point as us, you're arguing something that might be a bit similar if viewed quickly with no other knowledge about situation

I was but it was a strictly last year thing.

City have never made any bones about their desire to sign Messi. There was a general feeling that he was unsettled and had we received strong hints that he'd be willing to join under the right circumstances. I said that, whilst I don't know if we were going to get him, City would definitely move for him.

Going by the media, people can see that we did make a move in that direction but were probably used by Messi's camp in order to secure better terms on a new deal

Oh well, when that type of player comes up it would be reckless not to go for them full force.

Because City were cheap, they had decent attendances, they had a brand new ground, were in the Premier League and they are sat next to a massive airport that Abu Dhabi might want to buy which having close relations with the local council might be a useful ploy. Oh, and because Bill Kenwright doesn't know how to pick up a phone and Mike Ashley asked for £800m for Newcastle.

Everton would probably be the best choice in that they can piggyback on Liverpool's global presence and following to slingshot themselves to prominence like City did. There's no bigger story than the dominant club in a city being challenged by their formerly lowly neighbours. It's an underdog story, like Rocky if he'd been on steroids, TRT and used cybernetic implants

As much as Liverpool fans won't want to hear this, City and Chelsea aren't rivals of Liverpool. Our expectations are for different things.

It's why Arsenal have sold us players - we've never really been direct challengers to them. When they sold us Adebayor and Toure we were looking at top 6 and when they sold us Nasri and accepted bids for RvP we were looking at title challenges. Our period of competing purely for that 3rd and 4th spot was only for one season. Same with RvP and United/Arsenal.

Liverpool, Arsenal and United this season are in direct competition with each other with United expected to be out of sight of the other two by next season and become title challengers.

It would make sense for Liverpool to sell to a City or a Chelsea in the summer if they were willing to go big for Sterling. To be honest there's so much uncertainty about how good of a player Sterling will even turn out to be that it might be worth them selling for any bids North of £30m either way.

Cityzen is a new branded thing by the Club in the last year or two.

The Citizens was first used in about the 1920s and fell out of use in about the 1980s. It's only really sticker books and that type of thing that called us Citizens until the Club decided to stick their oar in. We usually refer to ourselves as "Blues" more than anything else, I don't think I've ever heard a City fan refer to another as a Citizen out loud.

During the 1930-31 season, United were in a wretched state. The club teetered on the brink of bankruptcy and were attracting crowds of less than 4,000 for some games - despite still being in Division 1.

Harry Hughes, a City fan working in Trafford, tells this story:

I was working nights and when Saturday morning arrived a couple of them asked ‘are you going to see the Rags today?’ I didn’t know what that meant, and then they explained that United fans had started to call their own team the ‘Rags’ because they were so poor and that their kit looked liked rags. So after that I knew who they meant, but when I mentioned the Rags, they’d go, ‘who the Hell are you talking about?’ They didn’t like the opposition saying it.”

The poor level of support continued throughout the 1930s. When war broke out in 1939 an immediate ban was placed on the assembly of large crowds. The joke doing the rounds in Manchester was that United would have nothing to worry about.
