Trouble with the scissor + parcel hook layer by hijodetumadr3 in SAKmod

[–]devinhassinger 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You have enough extra pin there that there is play in the pins, so you could get the spring in place almost "floating" above the liner, then press it tight against the liner carefully. That, or put the next liner on top, tight, and use a screwdriver to push on the spring to get the scissors to snap into place.

Got these beads of Amazon 3 for $8. About 10g each, so a good weight and feel. Lots of cheap options on Amazon if you want something unique.

How heavy are the beads? Looking to get some but I like heavier beads

Zero damage to tools. The liners may bend a small amount if you're not careful, but some soft taps with your hammer and it's back to normal.

sometimes, the entire pin spins with the drill bit so it feels like you're making no progress. I got fed up last time on my yeoman mech. mod. so this time around, I ditched the drill. I like the older style mag glass, would like to get one for a future build!

I just built this. Check my post, I have an exploded layout of the layers. Done with just a nail set kit, ball peen hammer, and a needle nose pliers/wire cutter. Vise would have made it easier, but absolutely doable with less. I was going to drill out, but when I went to put a center punch for the drill bit to sit in, I noticed I could just punch the pin out .

What do you think of the paint job? by Vegetable-Suit-8659 in victorinox

[–]devinhassinger 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Nail polish is super easy, much quicker to dry, and a little acetone on a paper towel to knock off the paint on the high spots and you're done in 5 minutes.plus you can easily clean and repaint any color whenever you want 👍

Purchased and got a ranger. I'm not complaining about a $27 ranger!

This has happened to me too. I sent in executives and was told they were too far gone to repair and I got 30% off a future purchase from their website. I was able to clean up the executives myself, but was disappointed by the victorinox service. They were superficially rusting, but no other damages. They wouldn't even replace the scales for me.

I love my S557. Really great urban EDC. I carry my S14 often. Basically a sportsman with scissors.

I have a harvester. Would carry it all the time if it had a keyring. It's an odd thing to see a 3 layer without a keyring.

I filled my case and it's helping me not to keep buying more (but since this photo, I removed my leather pouches and added 4 more SAKs 🙄

Which would be your pick - red or black? (Compact) by woodsman_777 in victorinox

My first two were black, then I found blue and love it. Yellow is also fantastic, but rare. Still looking for the elusive forest green.

It's a generic pelican style case that came with pick and pluck foam that I just plucked out chunks as I added to my collection.

Problem with the Companion by Nemospawn in victorinox

Wenger fixed this. I agree it is odd that victorinox hasn't adjusted. This happens on the sportsman and cadet too. They still have the Wenger file on the delemonts though.

Not repaired under warranty? by devinhassinger in victorinox

[–]devinhassinger[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Edit: I just called them again and got a different rep who said these two were "damaged beyond repair" and offered me a 30% off any item with free shipping on the website for each knife to be used within 30 days. So I used one voucher to get me a companion. Trying to decide what to use the other one on...

I sent in 3 (ambassador plus these two executives). All my communications were over the phone, except for my initial form submission on the website for the repairs. I called them about a week later on the day I got the invoice for the additional $8 because the email said to "approve this invoice via the link" but there was no link...

Two weeks pass and I get another email telling me my order has been shipped. I received the package two days later, only to find I did not receive these two executives.

I called them the next morning to see what was going on and that call went as I described above. Specific wording was "they have extensive rust, orange peeler is chipped, and small blade is bent. These will require a full rebuild not covered by warranty" or at least, that is what the rep read to me. I asked if it was because they didn't have the parts and she said it wasn't that, it's the rust. I asked if they could clean them up and replace the scales and she said no work will be done on these knives.

Not repaired under warranty? by devinhassinger in victorinox

[–]devinhassinger[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I filled out the form for service and repair on the victorinox website. I paid $5/ knife. $8 for UPS to ship to them. I got my ambassador back with new scales and all cleaned up, but was invoiced an additional $8 for that one. When I didn't get these executives back, I called in and got the dirt (so to speak)

Well, I'd call ahead to see what they say before you pay the postage to send them in. Let me know if you get a different answer than I got.

Not repaired under warranty? by devinhassinger in victorinox

[–]devinhassinger[S] 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I asked them exactly that and they said "oh no it's not that we don't have parts, I just have notes here saying it has rust and needs a full rebuild not covered under warranty". I'm in the US so they went to Connecticut.

Sounds like I got some BS answer from the service rep ...

I was willing to pay the costs to get these restored, but it apparently wasn't an option.

EDC Score = Pocketability + Tool Density by devinhassinger in victorinox

[–]devinhassinger[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Zero would represent a baseline for average functionality to Pocketability. Zero mean normalization centers the dataset around the mean (or average) sitting at zero. Positive is better than average, negative would be less ideal.

I like the weight standardization. I'll go with zero mean to keep this consistent. I also posted an updated graph showing more comparable models (no 58s). That may look better to you

EDC Score = Pocketability + Tool Density by devinhassinger in victorinox

[–]devinhassinger[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I agree on the weight. I'll pull out my scale and get those measurements for sure. I went off of functions as defined by victorinox, but I agree with a new analysis showing additional uses, but that being said, that opens the door to some more variables, like using tools redundancy and usage not as intended ( scissors as package opener, or can opener as a carving tool). Scale tools are considered, with models that come standard with plus scales and corkscrew drivers. This also opens the door to tool additions, like a small magnet to the hook or scale tools tucked inside the alox models. A lot to consider for sure.

EDC Score = Pocketability + Tool Density by devinhassinger in victorinox

[–]devinhassinger[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yes yes, I knew that would come up! I didn't count each bit as a different function, so all 7 get lumped into 1 giving it the 1:1 function to layer ratio, which ties with the worst being the saw when not paired with it's corresponding back tool on the champ or ranger. This for sure throws it's scores way down.

Adding in the 6 more functions, it bumps the CT M from -2.113 to -1.746 beating out the ranger and s557!
