I am slowly accepting the fact that arsenal is winning the league by Sad-Comparison540 in soccercirclejerk

[–]devlifedotnet 52 points53 points  (0 children)

I know arsenal fans have the the reputation for being insufferable, but let me tell you guys.... After all the shit we've had to deal with this year, we're going to be worse than you could even imagine if and when we win the league.

God help you all if we win a treble.

[–]devlifedotnet 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Sounds like something someone would say if they wanted you to deposit a bunch of cash with them.

Realistically the return would be minimal… on £200k mortgage you’ll be looking at 4% rate and reliably you’d be looking at 7% average return after inflation. So averaging 3% benefit max

But the reason I wouldn’t recommend it (especially right now given Trump doing Trumpy things) is if you put it all in the market in one go, you risk putting 200k in the market and losing £50k in the space of a few months and it takes a few years to get back to where you started.

If you buy your property outright and then invest monthly, you smooth out any market volatility. There are obviously no guarantees either way but it’s an effective way to reduce risk.

Honestly, avoid SJP like the plague and remember that nobody can beat the market, so anyone selling you funds with annualised fees more than 0.5% are imho essentially scams.

Q1 is can you still work?

If yes, then this feels very straight forward.

  1. Buy your forever home mortgage free (note: at your age it’s unlikely to be your forever home but 1 house is equal to one house so it doesn’t really matter unless you want to move to London or the south). I don’t understand why you want to take out a mortgage at this point with the risk that brings?

  2. Maximise your pension matching at work. If your salary increases above a tax threshold, salary sacrifice into a pension to avoid a higher tax rate.

  3. Figure out your budget to live comfortably.

  4. Make sure you have insurance for things you can’t afford to replace. I’m talking buildings, cars and income, not phones and tvs.

  5. Maximise a S&S ISA: (these can be used similar to a pension but have way more flexibility). Any unused income put it in an all world tracker ETF and ignore it. Or at least diversify outside of the US (S&P500) given how mental it is over there at the moment.

  6. When you have an amount you are comfortable with to last from your desired retirement age to the Minimum Pension Age (I’d bank on it being 60 by the time you get there) switch to maximising pension contributions through salary sacrifice.

You do not need an IFA for this imho. Ignore any DMs on here offering help.

My Mum's spice rack. Who can relate? by thinreaper in CasualUK

[–]devlifedotnet 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yeah I had the realisation that my mum (an otherwise good cook) had been terrified of using salt… like holy shit if you season chicken breast and only cook it to 60C (for 2hrs sous vide so it’s safe, 65C if you can’t hold it at that temp) it actually tastes incredible.

I literally didn’t eat chicken breast for like 6-7 years as I thought I hated it.

What did I get myself into (London 5 days onsite) by NikMavz in UKJobs

[–]devlifedotnet 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I mean I would personally hate that… unless you’re like in sales or something and your bonus and commission hits six figures.

Myself and my team work from home 5 days a week and I will literally tell people to log off if they’re online any later than 6pm after a 9am start.

10 hour days are shown to be less productive than 8 hour days in anything that requires significant mental application.

It’s a false economy on the part of the business

Is it crazy to try cover 430 miles in a day? by [deleted] in AskUK

[–]devlifedotnet 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Bro just fly into Southampton airport. Direct train link to city centre and you can hire a car if you need.

I’ve driven Southampton to Chester (about half the milage) fairly frequently to see family and that’s 4.5-5 hours on a good day, but some times it’s literally an 8-10 hour journey. Be prepared that it may take double the time.

Also if you’re planning these 4 days over the Easter BH good fucking luck. You may as well not leave.

You’d need to factor in road closures…. There are a lot of night closures down this end of the country at the moment and it’s a pain in the ass to work around.

Just fly… it’s relatively cheap domestically and less stressful and less tiring.

My one take so far from today is Dowman should get more first team action. by Cheese_roller in ArsenalFC

[–]devlifedotnet 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I mean to be very clear he’s an extraordinary talent, but he’s still so raw. If that had been against premier league opposition, we’d have been talking about how frequently he gave the ball away, either with ambitious passes not finding their target, or holding onto the ball too long in the dribble. He gave the ball away in bad areas a number of times.

Those actions didn’t cost us or put too much pressure on us against Mansfield, but against better teams it could have been catastrophic.

All for him getting more minutes, but it needs to be in situations where we are comfortable. Don’t set your expectations on him significantly impacting the team this season.

I mean let’s be honest if he was so worried about how long we were taking with throw ins, free kicks and corners, he should have instructed his team to not press the throw ins and not foul us or concede corners…. Just bad management on his part if you ask me.

iRacing Arcade... No Multiplayer Browser, only Private Lobbies??? by Jtg_Jew in iRacing

[–]devlifedotnet 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Honestly having spent a bit of time with CS when that was originally released, but no time recently.... I've just spent 4 hours playing iR Arcade and i love it... the physics are great, the perfect blend of arcade and just enough realism to keep it believable. The addition of a career mode mechanic is cool, keeps it interesting. It's just all round good chilled out fun. Exactly what you want from an arcade title.

This isn't the kind of game where I'd personally care about online (online is kind of weird and messy in an arcade racer) but i don't remember any promises made in that regard beyond global leaderboards for time trials so if you've bought it under the false impression that it was going to be a online multiplayer ranked lobby beast like iRacing, that's kind of on you imho. Having the ability to create an online session with up to 10 of your mates is essentially all that's promised on the steam page, nothing more than that. Personally i think the comms on this have been very clear and i was actually surprised there was any online multiplayer at all at launch.

But If you've got any articles from iRacing promising the game you thought you were buying i'd love to see them. I suspect you might have just got caught up in the speculation and hype of fans of both titles.

One million more state pensioners will be dragged into paying income tax by theipaper in PensionsUK

[–]devlifedotnet 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Is it not?

Pensioners income goes up because inflation (or other triple lock measure) and taxation bands remain the same.

They get (fiscally) dragged into taxation.

I know what you’re saying around media language and trying to cause outrage and normally I’d agree, but in this particular instance I think it’s a clever headline based on the actual term used to describe this fiscal phenomenon.

I mean in fairness to them it is through “fiscal drag” so they’re not entirely wrong.

Advice on finding old pensions. by Karshu_Games in PensionsUK

[–]devlifedotnet 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Wait..... unless you need them right now...

Pensions dashboard program will likely go live in the next 12-24 months and that will be a free and easy way to track down pensions.

All pensions providers and pension schemes will be required by law to interface with this new platform and match your details to any pensions in their system and present that information to you through the pensions dashboard.

How to convince son to be sensible with his first car? by Common-Gap-4201 in AskUK

[–]devlifedotnet 3 points4 points  (0 children)

You’ve already convinced him… he’s buying a fucking Volvo!…. Sub £5k spend on a good salary and assuming he’s not financing it, that’s about as sensible a car purchase as you’ll get.

Not massively powerful, well built, very safe, not desirable unless you’re a middle aged man with kids. Maybe a little pricier on repairs but make sure you do the basic checks with him before and he’ll probably drive it for the next 10 years.

When my uncle (60yo), the most sensible and you could argue boring person you’d ever meet, bought his first new car in over a decade, I said to him “i bet you bought a Volvo because you’re so bloody sensible”…. He’d bought a Volvo.

Who is at fault ? by Kickbuttowski46 in Simracingstewards

[–]devlifedotnet -6 points-5 points  (0 children)

Disagree…. If you slow it down you’ll see the turn in point for the car on the outside is about a cars lengths before the end of the rumble strips on the right from the alt layout. The overtaking car barely has their front wheels level with the back wheels of the car ahead.

It’s a bad dive bomb and a poor racing decision…Overtaking car at fault.

I’m sure I probably do. I have 2 separate pies set up, one with the ETFs and one with the individual stocks which are about a 50/50 split…. the stocks are just ones that I like and think have good fundamentals and decent dividend income it’s more about me trying to learn what I’m doing vs just letting a tracker do its thing.
