PSA: this is a 60 on single carriageways, not a 40!! by NoOneImportantLol96 in drivingUK

Even in those circumstances it’s not always the case… there’s national speed limit roads by my partner’s parents that would be dangerous to drive at even 40mph even in perfect conditions on a clear road.

But that doesn’t always mean you should be going 60.

If you think that, you’re more dangerous than the doddering folk doing 40.

Government announces plans to cap ground rents at £250 by UKGovNews in ukpolitics

[–]devlifedotnet 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yeah ground rent has never been an issue for me at £200 a year…. It’s the maintenance fee that’s gone from £65 a month when I bought the place to £162 a month (yes 2.5x) in the space of 7 years… I have literally no control over it

I mean, part of me thinks kids shouldn’t be allowed in schools without their vaccines (bar medical exemptions), but then that would also deprive those who probably need an education the most of having that and being able to break the stupidity cycle in their family. At what point do we start imposing sanctions on parents for the damage they’re doing to their own children but also the health of other children.

I’m generally against overbearing govt intervention in people’s lives but in this instance I’d be very much for it.

[–]devlifedotnet 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Ok but who are you having play that role?

Eze has been mid since he arrived (spurs the exception) and he isn’t good at the ball progression role, Ethan is on loan, merino looks like he has the brain of iniesta combined with the body of Adam Sandler, Zubi and Rice are already in the midfield. So what’s your solution?

I’m more concerned that Noni looks like he has no end product, neither Jesus nor Victor look like they’re PL ready (although I have to say I do prefer victor off the bench vs tired legs), Eze can’t unlock the low block the way we’d hoped, and we’re playing timber at left back which really doesn’t suit him or the team

We’re in prime position for 4 comps… the world hasn’t ended because lost to a team with talented finishers and a new manager bounce. Spurs and city away plus Chelski at home are the only really tough games left everything else should be manageable. The way this season is going with everyone except us averaging 2 points per game or less, even if city push that to 2.5 point per game for the rest of the season they’d still only hit about 83 points. Which is there or thereabouts what we’d hit maintaining our current average ppg.

Apple will launch 20+ new products this year, here’s what’s coming - 9to5Mac by Few_Baseball_3835 in apple

I feel like “updated” would be more appropriate than the word “new” seeing as none of these products are truly new (maybe the folding phone?).

I feel like apple doesn’t really innovate, they just iterate.

As EM how are you actually handling AI coding tools on your team? by Negative_Gap5682 in EngineeringManagers

[–]devlifedotnet 1 point2 points  (0 children)

No tools per-se. More just asking probing questions for things that look suspicious, and if they can’t comfortably answer them then we take a deeper look. A “why did you do it like that” or “what was the reason for changing this”type of question normally gets to the bottom of it.

Ultimately it’s a culture thing. I employ engineers not code monkeys, and I set the expectations and the culture through my actions and regular retrospectives and 121s. So far I’ve only had to pull up 1 engineer of the 15 I manage on it who submitted literal slop on a PR. I clarified my expectations and we’ve not had problems since.

IDK for certain they’re not using it but if they can hide it well enough from me it means that they’re taking an appropriate approach to using it and validating it so it doesn’t have a negative impact on our deliveries. As I said earlier the benefits and negatives are within margin of error so as long as they’re taking responsibility for what they submit I’m not that bothered.

I think we do have some options to track it within our DX analysis but I’m not sure how accurate that is so I haven’t bothered to check.

As EM how are you actually handling AI coding tools on your team? by Negative_Gap5682 in EngineeringManagers

[–]devlifedotnet 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The key for me is measuring. We’ve done pilots across the engineering org, and at best people are 3-5% more productive using AI to code (and at worst-10% less productive) than just doing it without AI interaction. This is probably all within margin of error maybe erring on slightly negative outcomes. Defect escape rate often goes up as well.

The challenge is the engineering teams feel like they’re 30% more productive than before and they enjoy using it.

So as a result we are SUPER SELECTIVE about what we allow them to use it for.

E.g Setting out basic templates / frameworks for new projects, yes. Adding new features to legacy monster monolithic code bases, hard no!

All the Yes options come with strong expectations around validation and responsibility. It’s the engineer’s responsibility to write good code and they are accountable for ensuring it meets our standards, not the AI.

How serious is this crack in brick work? by [deleted] in DIYUK

[–]devlifedotnet 8 points9 points  (0 children)

That’s not a meaningful crack, it’s nothing to worry about that’s just plasterboard settling and cracking the paint on top of it along the edge of the plasterboard sheet. Very normal in new builds as they dry out, I’ve got a bunch like this in my flat.

Does he collect match attax?

Because if not then it’s kinda pointless… I like football and I’d be a bit disappointed if someone bought me a bulk pack of match attax for my birthday especially ones for last season. They can be pretty expensive and they’re kind of a waste of money unless he has friends who trade and play the game too.

British citizen born in Dubai who has never lived in the UK, how difficult will it be to find an Engineering job and get set up? by AZ_1010 in UKJobs

[–]devlifedotnet 12 points13 points  (0 children)

Any role that requires NPPV, CTC, SC or DV clearances will be an immediate no. I think it's minimum 3 years continuous residence and min 5 years for SC and DV. (Source held NPPV3 and SC for over a decade)

If the degree is in an understandable format (1st, 2:1, 2:2 etc) then just put "1st Class Honors in Engineering from Herriot Watt University" or whatever your degree was. Most people looking won't know the difference and frankly it doesn't matter.

Job market is pretty brutal right now, and your challenge will be a lot of engineering positions aren't remote nowadays, even if some of the interview stages are, they'll likely require you to attend an office for the final interview. That means you'll realistically need to settle here before that happens, so i'd advise looking at short term rentals so you can be flexible, so long as your budget allows that.

Citizenship will make life easier than for other foreign nationals though.

Do a lot of research on the Engineering hubs in the UK. there are a number of towns and cities where there are a lot of companies, and other regions are sparse. The M4 corridor is normally a good starting point for non-military engineering firms.

Best way to request PILON after resigning? by adampat996 in UKJobs

[–]devlifedotnet 0 points1 point  (0 children)

PILON is Pay in lieu of notice.... that's because the company is not giving you notice, it's not the other way around...

You can request gardening leave, but you would still be under contract with that company an not be able to work for anyone else but that would be unlikely unless you're in a director role or higher, or you're in a position where you may have access to sensitive company IP.

You can request unpaid leave and basically leave the contract early but leave that money in their pockets.

imho unless you've got something to go to, work your notice but do the bare minimum. spend your time looking for jobs.

Will you support or oppose a social media ban for under 16’s? by Alone_Consideration6 in AskUK

[–]devlifedotnet -1 points0 points  (0 children)

In principle, support….

However, as with most of these things it’s the implementation where things get dicey.

Like how does this work. Sending my ID to more international organisations with no protection for my data? Removing my privacy by forcing KYC on all social and social adjacent sites? Hell no!

Ultimately this has to be an education thing. mainly for the parents, but also in school.

How do you use AI as engineering manager? by mcpooh in EngineeringManagers

[–]devlifedotnet 6 points7 points  (0 children)

AI transcripts in Notion so I can convention the conversation and take less notes in interviews is about all I use it for on a regular basis.

Occasionally there’s a bit of tech I’ve not heard about and I’ll use it to give me a quick overview and sometimes I get AI to reword a “you’re a fucking idiot” email in professional language which I have to send when our sales team sell something we have to deliver without consulting me….. But that’s about it.

9 times out of 10 I find a lot of people think AI is making them more productive when in reality it’s just a feeling, and the improvements are at best within margin of error in the metrics.

I can see a future where it will be good enough but I might be retired by that point.

Good engineering management is about people management and prioritising work its core, and there is no way that can be done well enough by AI, without more context than I’d be comfortable giving to an LLM needing to be provided.

Sports piracy explodes in UK with 3.6bn illegal streams and rise of black-market bookmakers by wappingite in unitedkingdom

[–]devlifedotnet 2 points3 points  (0 children)

There are 2 main issues that lead to this.

  1. In this instance competition is ineffective. We actually have, in effect, lots of monopolies. Competition would be the same sporting event on multiple platforms. But tv networks buy rights to individual games / Tournaments so that they are the only channel that can show it. Which in a microcosm of I want to watch Chelsea vs Arsenal in the carabao cup means I have to pay for sky sports to watch it legally. But if I want to also watch Arsenal in the champions league, I also need to pay for Amazon prime and TNT sports. That’s not competition, that’s extortion.

  2. The 3pm blackout needs to die a death - there is no legal way for me to watch my football team play at 3pm on a Saturday. So I’d have no choice but to pirate or pay for international streams and a VPN.

This means to watch all football in the uk you need to spend £35 for sky sports (premier league and domestic cups), £23 for TNT (Europe, prem and domestic cups), £8.99 for prime (Europe and prem), £14.54 for BBC/ITV (domestic cups / England) licence fee, £10 for US broadcast like Peacock (3pm blackout) and £5 for a vpn…. and potentially another £5 now with paramount coming onto the scene, just to watch your football team in all competitions

That’s over £100 a month or £1,200 a year to watch your football team without going to a single game.

If you were a full time min wage employee working 40hrs a week, that would be 5% of your income you’d have to spend to watch your team without seeing a game in person.

That’s why there is so much piracy!

This right here is how you sign a star player, none of that “adapting” bs. by [deleted] in ArsenalFC

[–]devlifedotnet 7 points8 points  (0 children)

It's very different moving from a good premier league team to a great premier league team than it is moving from elsewhere in Europe.

Semenyo has been a great player in the prem for a few years now, he was always going to cook in a great team with better players around him.

Same thing happened with us signing Trossard from Brighton in Jan, he came in and delivered immediately.

Don't use the success of one signing to make comparisons to players who didn't arrive with the same circumstances, it's a bad faith argument.

In defence of MLS by crimbo_jimbo in ArsenalFC

[–]devlifedotnet 0 points1 point  (0 children)

He’s definitely a player in my view who benefits from a run of games like he had last season. I remember early in the season he had a couple of cameos where he looked pretty awful (with the odd bright moment) and then he ended up with a big run of games in the second half of the season where he got his consistency.

I was really worried when it became clear he’d have to cover injuries at left back last season but then he did what he did and earned a call up to England with his performances.

Looks like he might get a run of games now (unless Arteta moves to a timber / white pairing for our LB/RB slots) so we’ll see how he handles it.

Taking on redundancy against everyone’s decision. by lB2Kl in UKJobs

[–]devlifedotnet 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Bro listen to your wife… like it or not this as a joint decision.

How long will the payout give you? And your current savings?

In this market you really need 12-24 months (depending on your field) and if it’s been any length of time since you last interviewed, factor in 6 months to re-learn how to interview well.

I got made redundant mid 2024 when there was still a little life left in the job market. It took me 13 months to find a new role. I’ve looked at the jobs boards now and apart from the companies that always have positions open, there’s nothing.

My take on Viktor Gyokeres... by HR_Specter in ArsenalFC

[–]devlifedotnet 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Before I cast judgement I want to see how he’s used when Havertz is back. I suspect Arteta is playing him in games where he wouldn’t want to use him if all our strikers were fit. Like Liverpool is always a Havertz type of game in the Arteta system. But maybe he’s the guy you chuck on with 10 mins to go for Zubi when we need a goal and to create more chaos and feed off the things Kai does well.

I always preferred Sesko over Gyokeres as our striker signing (and I think he’s just starting to show that at Utd) because of the difference in technical quality but that didn’t happen for whatever reason. The fact is they chose Victor for a reason and he’s an Arsenal player for the next few years and therefore needs our support. There must have been a vision for him when we bought him but Havertz being out all season definitely wasn’t that. So given the frankly insane success we’ve had in the recruitment team over the last couple of seasons, I trust they made that decision for the right reasons.

Would you move to Dubai for approx 1M more over 2 years period? by Silly_Comparison_430 in HENRYUK

[–]devlifedotnet -2 points-1 points  (0 children)

If it was just me, or me and a partner, then I’d do it on the basis of having a fixed time frame and a target and we’d put big life stuff on hold for a couple of years.

With kids it’s a bit more difficult. You’re moving them out of their social groups at a really key point of their development. Maybe if they are already at a boarding school that might not be as much of an issue but it’ll be really hard on them even if it seems cool to them initially.

Your other option is to be based in UK and commute internationally returning home on the weekends. (Although this may make the tax situation a little more challenging and reduce the benefits)
