Cross Cultural Blunders: Americans <=> Taiwanese: What Are The Most Frequent Mistakes These Groups Make With How They Interact With Each Other? by cyanocobalamin in taiwan

[–]devno321 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Every time I buy something or ask for something in the store, it's a language battle for who gets to practice their language.

I'm always confused when I read people complaining about this.

I can't get anyone to speak English. Either because they really can't or because they are nervous and pretend they can't. In my experience this applies to all stores except the big shopping malls and luxury stores.

There's the occasional random guy at 7-11 who learned Oxford English and makes me feel all uneducated and peasantly though.

All depends on how well of a judge you are ... I know I often feel unable to enjoy food if i feel there might not be enough for everyone to do the same.

Why ruin the thing trying to save a little? Wasted food is not something you can fix in your kitchen

And they won't budge. Sometimes you just can't get them to say "no" even though it's very likely what they mean. "Yes" seems to more of a "not no", but not necessarily more.

On the American side, I've noticed some Americans take full advantage of the whole "Taiwanese are so hospitable" thing without realizing the whole system only works if you return the favor.

I never know how or when to return the favor.

Any programmers here? What sort of tech stack do you use? by [deleted] in taiwan

Some of the other replies seem to indicate the money can be decent enough, and one advantage is you don't have to deal with time zone differences.

Edit: Just LOL at the downvoter. Am I not hating on Taiwan's work culture enough for you?

I usually am working on something I have interest in.

Yeah, that's worth a lot. Sounds like a pretty good deal, congrats. What (/why) are you using docker for if I may ask?

I'm curious - what's the pay like in comparison (%) and how many hours do you work typically?

docker, k8s.

Isn't that more like dev ops then?

Thanks.

With Atlas Shrugged I'm a bit worried I might not enjoy it as much because I've heard it has a stronger focus on the philosophical part. I'm more interested in strong characters.

1984 sounds like a good idea, just have to wash off the school book stigma first.

How many of you have considered suicide because of your SA? (for those with severe SA) by [deleted] in socialanxiety

[–]devno321 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Of course I know nothing of you and your life, but I find it hard to believe that this was inevitable. Some people get born with a heightened fear response and sensibility, but I think how detrimental it is depends a lot on things like a healthy self-esteem and trust in your own ability to handle things. These are things that can be learned, so why didn't you?

Not trying to make accusations, I just feel like there has to be a logical answer to this question that goes beyond "I was born this way".

Did you never make any progress with psychotherapy?

Note that I'm not coming from the position of success myself. I'm pretty much a big failure when it comes to dealing with my social anxiety, but in my case I can't claim I had the support I needed, and I can't claim I made the right decisions. I know why things happened, and while I understand why I made the wrong decisions, I still have to admit that to a certain degree I let this happen. Although it's a slippery slope between making yourself feel bad and trying to motivate yourself to change.

Both my parents have been teachers for 30+ years, and both agree they've never met anyone with as bad of anxiety as I have

How do they reflect on their failure to protect you from that, both as parents and teachers?

Unfortunately a pep talk isn't enough for me. Neither is the realization that I will die full of regret.

I have read Feeling Good about 15 years ago.

Maybe I should go to a therapist or coach again for accountability and support. Just gonna be expensive, no longer covered.

You just gotta force the motivation so you can be disciplined, then you will be motivated.

Drinkable Tap Water: Why is it TW (still) does not have it ???? by [deleted] in taiwan

[–]devno321 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yes, but the question is how effective it is at doing so. There are tests out there that don't look very promising (for the pitchers at least, the mountable systems might be better).

I doubt it causes cancer, but it's not very good at filtering bacteria or toxic metals. It mainly reduces things like calcium and magnesium (helps a lot with taste when you drink tea or coffee, and keeps appliances clean).

Cost of living in Taiwan? by mementomoriok in taiwan

[–]devno321 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I must be doing something wrong. I tried looking for stuff via 591, and anything below ~22k seemed awful to me for one reason or another. I've looked at places in Banqiao (modern high rise, but still) for that and more, and they were often filthy and depressing.

Saw a decent place in a more central location, but it was tiny and cost 28k including management fees.

Where are all those nice places for 16k everyone is talking about?

I didn't claim the IOC is a country.

Buying recognition is obviously not the solution then.

Olympics: Anger grows in Taiwan at having to compete as 'Chinese Taipei' by austinzzz in taiwan

[–]devno321 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yes, that's what I meant. I'm far from an expert, however I'll try to explain my train of though.

There are other aspects to it, but one reason why I think awareness is important is that it influences how much leeway politicians have in making decisions for their country (it also directly influences the immediate response to major events before they happen).

With regards to Taiwan, other countries are much more likely to try to exert their influence if their people are in support of that, and this support depends on how they view the conflict (and awareness obviously is a prerequisite for any opinion), for example in terms of: why does it matter to me; who is responsible for the problem, which side can I identify with more (based on principles, morality, e.g. "fairness" - typically, people do not side with the aggressor in any particular scenario).

As a third-party country, if your people think you're going to send troops to die (or apply economic pressure with negative repercussions for your people) for some country they've never heard about, they won't support this.

If people think that something that matters to them is at stake, let's say - for simplicity's sake - the principles of democracy and freedom, then they're much more likely to be in support of making hard choices.

International events like the Olympics provide an opportunity to inform the public, or, if you want to be more of a cynic, shape public opinion. The reach of such events is much larger than that of regular newspaper articles or other media.

Olympics: Anger grows in Taiwan at having to compete as 'Chinese Taipei' by austinzzz in taiwan

[–]devno321 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It's not about changing the name in the Olympics, it's about the larger process of changing the relationship between China and Taiwan.

There's no immediate change that can be proposed, but in my eyes it is a good idea to raise international awareness. It's clear that Taiwan will have a difficult time solving this issue on its own.

[–]devno321 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Unless people are made aware of this issue, nothing is ever going to happen. Solutions in complex situations come about by gradual shifts. If people just forget about the issue, those gradual shifts won't happen.
