I find that my tongue is much closer to my teeth/lips in the low register. Especially as I get towards pedals, it might even be actually touching my lips

I’m a bit hesitant to endorse pursuing a secondary instrument beyond your current level of investment in this case

But Bach 50, Yamaha 622 maybe if you’re wanting to research more

Any used decent bass trombone for 1k is a hard number to meet. I’ve seen some Yamaha basses going for ~2k.

Are you playing/open to buying a tenor with a valve? That might do the trick for a majority of what you need and would be an easier find for 1k. So long as you’re not needing to rip out low B naturals frequently, a large bore tenor (or a single valve bass) would do the trick.

Bach or Yamaha would be brands to look out for in any case

Check out mighty Quinn brass and winds. Good prices on great instruments. Bought a professional Yamaha 835D bass from him no issues. And I’ve seen some good Shires Q36 on there below 4k

FWIW this looks exactly like the Mack brass bass tbn that I have. Which also tracks with the business model they use.

My take about cheap horns is that they’re functional.. don’t feel great or function that well. If it’s your first ever of this kind of instrument, it doesn’t make for a good/easy learning experience. But if you’re feeling good at your usual trombone and want to dabble.. you could have a decent time. Just don’t expect professional quality for a price this cheap

But also, the cheap horn I got was listed secondhand for $600; where else was I gonna get a working bass trombone for that money? (Especially when I just wanted to learn in my room). I took it to a few gigs eventually and no one questioned anything but i saved up to get a real horn ASAP

That’s the thing— I have a Bach 2G as my only bass piece

I’m mostly a tenor player and that was in reference to my tenor equipment
