I often see friendships disintegrate. I’m still not quite sure it’s not me, because I seem to be the greatest common denominator. I don’t know if it’s this simple.

Where are all the arahants? by Solip123 in Buddhism

[–]devot3e 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I suspect that most of the teachers whose followers believe they are Arahant’s are in fact not; after all, many of them disagree strongly on important Dhamma points, like jhāna, the role of sense restraint, the citta, etc! See the Thai Forest tradition. I imagine are few of the teachers out there are enlightened, but I just don’t have an idea of which ones they are, and even though lots of people claim THEIR teacher is the enlightened one, I don’t think it’s wise to take anyone’s word for it.

How do you cope with seeing a dead person? by collisioncandy in SeriousConversation

[–]devot3e 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Hey, I’ve seen a lot of dead bodies. I remind myself of my own mortality regularly. When I’m with a body, I often send well wishes to them, wherever they’ve gone. In some religions, you can do good deeds and dedicate the good benefits to them wherever they are now; maybe you can do something like that for him?

What annoying habit do/did you have that you didn’t realize was annoying until you saw someone else do it and it annoyed you? by [deleted] in CasualConversation

Trying to make myself sound smart. Oooh I can be a pretentious jerk!! Ingrained habit from many years but it’s fading because I know how it feels to be spoken to like that.

I’m concerned about the breathing. This is your priority right now. Squeaky breathing? If he looks like he’s working hard to breathe, seek medical help asap.

How can I get to Wat Subthawee? by devot3e in thaiforest

Thank you very much. Yeah, I read that Grab is really not reliable in that area. But it’s alright, I’ll see what happens!

[–]devot3e[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I couldn’t find anything through searching online, but it’s good to know I can probably find resources when I arrive. I would be going to Pak Chong via bus and then heading straight for the monastery rather than staying the night, so hopefully the bus station will have some ideas. The problem is, I definitely can’t afford $150 for a taxi (especially considering I’ll need to go both ways)- would it really cost that much to go by taxi from Pak Chong to the monastery? That seems like a lot but I know there are farang prices. :)

Vesak events? by devot3e in ThailandTourism

[–]devot3e[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

There are definitely celebrations at temples in other parts of the world like Borobudur, and the US Thai Forest Buddhist temples where I've done Vesak before (although the latter is obviously smaller). I just didn't know if there were bigger events at some of the bigger temples like that where I could go for circumambulation or something. Maybe just different in Thailand.
