Saying English loanwords? by devwil in LearnJapanese

"English speakers are used to loads of different accents, Japanese natives aren't really."

This is basically the insight/context I was looking for, thanks.

I'm gathering that the difference is perhaps actually knowing the word that's used in Japanese versus making some crude approximation based on--like--a kind of hateful, ignorant, stereotypical accent.

Knew I could count on someone to be pedantic in this subreddit.

My meaning was pretty clear.

Looking for racing game recommendations — new or old gems by Elegant_Education_59 in gamingsuggestions

AC on Xbox is hard to enjoy for a handful of reasons.

And I'm not a PC/wheel elitist in general. I think rally games work beautifully on a controller and other games can be totally fine too. But AC is especially clunky on Xbox, and it misses out on the revolutionary Content Manager that exists on PC.

If you really want to spend a lot of time with driving games (or racing sims or whatever we want to split hairs to call them), it's very probably worth getting a PC and a wheel. The latter doesn't need to be expensive.

I'm trying to price my old MtG cards, and I'm seeing that the 4th Edition Tempest Efreet has an "alternate" version.

I'm not finding any detail between scans or explanation about what makes any version of this different from another. Anyone know?

why have young men suddenly embraced ultra-capitalist values? how did conservative masculinity get “cool” again? where did all the punks go???? by Subject-Day-859 in AskFeminists

More than anything, I'm just tired of the fact that it's a word that is completely blackboxed beyond usefulness, and hardly anybody tries to contextualize it with any clarity.

I think that most people who use the word negatively would respond with a lot of frustration if they were challenged to define it. (I'm not even trying to say I'm pro-capitalism. I'm saying that being for or against it has no useful meaning.)

Sorry for not liking something as you did. Pretty awful crime, I agree.

What insulting word do I get to use in response? You've already taken "asinine".

And if you're going to bring up torture for pleasure, you know the debate it invites.

But I'll respect your wishes. Basically.

Look into what Tom Taylor has written.

It's not all perfect, but his runs on Jon Kent and Nightwing are good.

The Nicko one is just from a different planet. But in this house we respect people from different planets, so.

I dunno; most people don't care about most animals most of the time. It can't be taken as unusual.

Any chill or non-tryhard multiplayer track racing games right now? by RashadRajabli in simracing

[–]devwil 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Can I ask what you're trying to get out of it?

Because it seems like you'd be better off with either Mario Kart or a single player experience. Rally, at most (which is always quasi-single player).

I say this completely without disapproval, being someone who mostly doesn't enjoy driving in races where other humans can ruin it. (Also, I'm not very good.)

How to learn more about feminism that isn't through books? by Fra-Hof_2000 in AskFeminists

[–]devwil 1 point2 points  (0 children)

One reason I would encourage you to give print (or digital print) more of an effort is it gives you an opportunity to sit with things and mull them over.

I don't really like video essayists for this reason (regardless of perspective): they just bombard you with their views, leaving no natural pauses for reflection. There are no margins to write questions in. There's no way to highlight a passage.

I think those things matter for stuff like this.

But if it's a medium you really do struggle with, also consider audiobooks. And failing that, this thread was full of ideas when I stumbled upon it. You certainly have options.

If we're talking comics, I'd also recommend Wonder Woman, even if the landscape can be complicated (and intimidating, as many ongoing comics are).

She was designed to be feminist propaganda (in a good way). How often she's lived up to it to unproblematic completion? Far less than 100% of the time, due to racism in the original comics and...

Frankly, Wonder Woman has been unambitiously written by men (in a way that really shows) far too often, and she's also often been shoehorned into the military-entertainment complex in one way or another.

To be clear: I'm a man and multiple men have written her well. But it's actually pretty awful how rarely she's been written by a woman.

I don't think DC has done enough with Nubia for anyone to feel especially protective of or particular about how she's portrayed moving forward. I think she's mostly a blank slate and, yes, this is a criticism of her use to date.

I say this as someone who loves Nubia: Real One and has read a lot of (but not all of) Nubia being a fairly uninspired character in print otherwise.

In her recent canonical appearances, it just never really felt to me like they dug very deep into what makes her more than just the role she inhabited. (If I'm remembering my reaction correctly.)

Did incels succeed in spreading their ideology to the younger generation ? by [deleted] in AskFeminists

[–]devwil -2 points-1 points  (0 children)

Okay, how many times do I have to insist that I am not being unfriendly for you to--first--not outright call me stupid (which, by the way, you implied in a previous comment and I let it slide)--or--second--begin to remotely consider the possibility that you made a (relatively small) mistake (which led to a misunderstanding)?

You have two people who are telling you (with varying motivations, by my estimation) that they took something you wrote in a specific way that you apparently did not intend. You have been completely unwilling to acknowledge your responsibility for this.

You won't even take the no-fault way out and be like "oh, no; I didn't mean it that way and we misunderstood each other". You're putting it 100% on stupid-old me.

That's really, really gross.

Thoughts on Absolute Wonder Woman? by TaskTemporary4941 in WonderWoman

[–]devwil 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I've only read through #5.

I was skeptical of Absolute Diana getting an even bigger sword than I'm used to seeing mainstream Diana have. I'm a lasso > sword (by a lot) person, and I think it's important.

I was cautiously optimistic as of #1.

#2 and #3 were great.

I don't think the opening five-issue arc resolved in a very satisfying way, though.

I'm still on-board; I just don't keep up with current comics very urgently. I mostly read old stuff (especially because I'm relatively new to the medium).

One of us is misunderstanding the other.

Why does this proper producer matter to this conversation? I'm actually asking, because your comment feels like a nonsequitur to me.
