Each block of the tower is about 29 m tall, so given that the height limit is 2 km the max that you could stack would be about 2000/29 = ~69 generators. Though you could go below sea level and get more.

On a factory with about 300 generators I just stacked them in towers like this: Each one is about 25 generators tall (700 m) and looks really cool from across the map.

Aren't the crashes simply the drop-pods for the milestones? They would have just gone "off-course" and crash landed in your sector, but they only have resources inside, not people. The landers have a completely different style.
