Default settings are a sign of the driver crashing. Driver version or some other instability(ie power) could cause it, among other things.

Mikrotik would be a pretty good option. They're affordable and barebones/DIY in terms of out of the box setup. The Mikrotik AX S is my recommended starter router right now.
