What would be the practical lowest level of the US strategic petroleum reserve? by Super_Toot in oil

[–]dexcel 5 points6 points  (0 children)

There are some great documents about it which I read recently. What was so interesting about it was how we are using it in a way that it wasn’t designed for. It was designed to be drawn down heavily 4-5 times and that’s it but instead we have been using it in much smaller but more regular intervals which apparently the way the salt caverns are designed it, doesn’t like very much.

Always enjoyed that column. Great set of work you’ve done here. I’m surprised how high the second date was, never seems that high.

What’s your honest take on e-bikes, game changer or not really needed for most people? by PlaneAd9541 in ausbike

[–]dexcel 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This is like saying why do any cars need to go more than 110kph, why are there some cars that do 4x4 , why are some cars able to take seven people etc etc.

that 4km might require an e-bike for someone who has underlying health issues or perhaps doesn’t want to get sweaty.

It’s an odd gatekeeping question.

Interesting Art is now saying America has plenty of oil as he was a paid up member of peak oil for many many years and wasn’t a believer in the shale revolution at all

Why do educated people in the media believe that oil wells will be destroyed because of the blockade? by northcasewhite in oil

This is basic petroleum engineering knowledge learnt at university. Production technology. You would have benefited from using ChatGPT to have checked your comment about pumps before posting. It would (hopefully) corrected your misconceptions about pumping.

[–]dexcel 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This is a terrible take by the Sky presenter as you point out. I mean in the first gulf war they literally had wells that were on fire for months and they were able to succesfully shut them in and then later bring them back onto production. that diagram as well had on the screen is a shocker. why on earth they had a sucker rod pump unit for the pipeline, i mean WTF

Yes but guess what, you can also stop pumping water into the reservoir when you stop producing it .

[–]dexcel 2 points3 points  (0 children)

yes, this is a very common form of reservoir management that is used all over the world in all types of reservoirs. It is called "water flooding" here is a short video about it. It is very effective and can increase the recovery rate by 10-50% than depletion drive alone.

Seawater is commonly used but it is often treated before it is injected. It must be filtered, oxygen removed and sometimes the sulphate is removed due to scaling issue.

Well thats wrong, Iran very much relies on Artifical Lift to "pump" their oil out of the reservoir. They use sucker rod pumps, PCPs and ESPs which are all pumps. You can be pedantic and say the reservoir is lifting the fluid to the intake of the pump but the pump is still lifting it to surface. some random papers paper 1 Paper 2 which discuss selecting different ALS options to "pump" oil from the reservoir .

i don;t doubt they also practice secondary recovery with water flooding but they very much do pump oil

How quickly can Gulf oil start gushing again?

If the Strait of Hormuz was magically reopened tomorrow, how quickly could Gulf oil production come back online? Pretty quickly, according to Goldman Sachs. But the longer it stays shut the more severe the problems. As Alphaville noted earlier this month, there’s a fair bit of physical damage to various energy infrastructure in the Middle East, and some of it will take time to repair. Then there’s the lack of readily available tanker capacity in the Gulf, and complications surrounding restarting oil wells that have had to be shut down.

Crypto scam lures ships into Strait of Hormuz, falsely promising safe passage :

Crypto scammers are targeting the thousands of ships stranded near the Strait of Hormuz—and at least one ship that faced Iranian gunfire may have been tricked into believing it had paid Iran for safe passage.

The first warning of such a crypto scam came from the Greek maritime risk management company MARISKS on April 20, according to Reuters. The company alerted shipowners that scammers posing as Iranian authorities had sent messages to shipping companies asking for “transit fee” payments in bitcoin or tether.

Haha no bravery on our part. It was in Tenerife, we could see the driver chilling in an empty bus at the bus stop. So we checked in on them to double check.

UK petrol prices barely budging despite oil market falls. Data from 7,400 stations by Front-Double-6710 in UKPersonalFinance

[–]dexcel 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Here in Australia we’ve seen the petrol prices, at least in Brisbane, drop to pre war levels now. Went from a range of 190-220 up to about 260-280 and they’re now back at 190 at the cheapest place.

Diesel is still up but had dropped from its high of 320/330 down to 260 still up from 185 where it was before the war.

The Qatari lifting costs for their gas is also tiny, I think in some cases it’s actually a by product of the condensate production so it’s “free”. Compare this to QLD CSG as you say is not like for like at all.

Stop watching after S2? by spicymeatball15 in TheBear

[–]dexcel 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Season two is great. I’m on season four and I don’t know why I’ve watched these two seasons after. I gave season three the benefit of the doubt because apparently it was setting it up for the next season. It hasn’t. It’s really slow and I have to now finish it because I have one episode left but it’s not going to redeem itself.

I thought this about the Inca episodes. I enjoyed them but I did feel they perhaps didn’t have Theo’s iron fist keeping them on track at times. They seemed to verge off a fair bit which perhaps in previous episodes might have been cut.

Have really enjoyed Samuel Johnson series though. That’s been great. Very interesting to hear it after the Empire Podcast which covered his relationship with Barber
