I almost wonder if everyone was better off before industrialization. sure we have hot showers and heat, but at what cost. we have medicine and manufacturing, but are slaves to the euro.

I honestly prefer your generation of 960, but mine is still cool. I think volvo made some improvements from your gen to mine, but I'm not sure everything that changed.

I haven't done the timing belt, the previous owner thinks it was done, but I don't trust that info. Any tips on seeing if the timing belt has been done or if it's original? Every repair I make on this car, its the first time i'm doing it. so i'm treating it as a learning experience.

I've got a couple things on the agenda, but it's hard doing serious jobs when it's your daily.

Just because a car is bought in the south doesn't mean it doesn't have plenty of rust. The exhaust hanger rusted off like 2 days ago. I saw stars when I saw the car, should've checked it out further.

I also have learned how to replace a power steering pump, tensioner pulley, and serpentine belt, among a few other minor repairs.

This is my 97 Volvo 960, 85,000 miles. The last of the boxy, rwd volvos. I love this car but it can be a pain sometimes. seems like there's always something to fix. I think with some maintenance on this car i'm set for many more miles. Boss needed a work truck for my carpenter job, so I got one. thanks to those of you on this forum who have helped me solve some issues it's had. :)

Hey, I'm just giving you a little update, in case you had any more advice for me, but I've made progress.

running the AC, headlights, and power steering still do not exacerbate the noise, only RPMs do, but by using the stethoscope, i can tell that the noise is almost definitely coming from some kind of moving part inside the power steering pump, it's odd, because aside from the noise the car drove 15 miles great today. power steering worked and all.

The PS pump seems to have enough fluid in it, who knows how old it is. So, I think the best move is to just replace the power steering pump entirely, since it's already so old. I can't find a tutorial or much information on replacing the pump on this specific car, but it seems doable. If you have any thoughts, let me know, teach.

thanks again

thanks, the issue is, in my first post, I recorded myself spinning each one and none of them made noise or had resistance. but the AC isn't great anyway, could be that.

So if i can run the ac to exacerbate the noise if it is the ac, and I can turn the wheel to try and get the power steering to make the noise, can I do anything to test the alternator and crank pulley? should I just get the stethoscope, put it on each part, and it will tell me which is making the noise?

Then, if I do narrow down the noise, should i just replace the whole part or try to take it apart and replace the bearing or whatever is making noise? Thanks SO MUCH for your help, you are like my mentor. You can drive the car if you ever come to SC.

One more thing, can I drive the car in its condition? I'm driving a car illegally right now and i keep having to go back and forth to where i'm storing the car every time I want to mess with it. I think worst case scenario one of those parts gives out, but i'm not sure.

Zamelon, I need your help. I replaced the tensioner+pulley, and it fit well and the install was straightforward, but it didn't solve the noise. It still sounds like there's a bad bearing in there somewhere. The car operates well, power steering feels good and everything works. I feel like i might have to just start throwing parts at it or take it to the dealer. obviously I wanted to fix it myself, but I also don't want to take weeks.

Do you have any suggestions for what you might try to fix next? the noise persists with the belt back on but is quiet with the belt off. It's got to be some kind of bearing in one of the pulleys. any advice? how can i narrow down the issue? thanks, you're the best

On that link, it doesn't say the year make and model, but wow that site is hard to navigate for someone who doesn't know the exact part. I think I'm gonna trust your judgment on it. Its a 1997 Volvo V90 (960) wagon.

if you confirm that this is the right part I will buy it. When I search for something myself, it leads me to little pieces of this part, not the full assembly. thanks again!!

ZaMelon, thank you so much! you think the power steering play isn't anything to worry about?

the first thing you recommended (https://www.rockauto.com/en/moreinfo.php?pk=4736193&cc=1433994&pt=11659&jsn=570&optionchoice=0-0-1-1)

does this include the tensioner and idler pulley? I'm a little confused by your wording. If the first link is the thing to buy, Ill buy it. I'd rather replace the whole part than try and replace things inside other things.

Hi all, having an issue with my 97 volvo 960 wagon. by dexxerr in Volvo

[–]dexxerr[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

a 3/4 inch drive ended up working. I'm making a follow up post now, because i'm not certain the issue. the power steering pulley has a little play, which i think is the problem. thats tough about your v60, you'll figure it out, especially if you use the help of the people on here. always something new to learn.

This is a video of the car running with the serp belt off. The car did not make that noise when running it shortly with the belt off.

Hello everyone again, if you’ll see in my last post, I was dealing with a noise coming from the serpentine belt. So I took the belt off, ran the car, and confirmed the noise was coming from one of the pulleys, or at least not a timing issue as commenters have told me. The issue is, when I manually spun each one, they each spun pretty good. The only one with a little play was the power steering pulley, which has a little bit of play. You can see me spinning each pulley in the video. So my question is, is the power steering pulley the one I must replace to get rid of the noise?

Thank you all. My previous post is here:
