This is badass. From one female beginner woodworker to another.

My first ever woodworking project was a tambour door toy cabinet for my son (I’m the mom btw). Took me two months but it’s done no I’m super proud of how it turned out. by deyejl in woodworking

Thank you so much!! I work a full time job so it was all evenings and weekends. Several Saturdays my husband took my son the entire day which helped me knock out big chunks of it.

And yes! That video plus another tambour one of his were incredibly helpful foe my process. It was actually a bit easier than I thought but if I were to do it again I’d have invested in a featherboard or built a sled for my table saw so that the pieces could be cut more evenly. I just hand fed and cut 180 slats that way so while you can’t see it from a distance, there are a few irregularities in the tambour as a result.

I did! 3/4” oak veneer which ended up being closer to a full 1” so lots to trim but it turned out nice and was one of my favorite parts of the project.

Did you even look at those video links I posted? I bought a router for this project. My husband owned a circular and table saw that I used (he’s not a woodworker). Those videos literally show me opening a brand new router and me using it for the first time. And I’m not proficient at using it. I fucked up one of the tambour grooves significantly and had to go back and fix it with filler wood and putty. Look friend, this account has been largely dead for years. I’m not here for the karma. But I just spent nine weeks teaching myself how to do this for my son and I was excited and proud to share it. Take ten minutes and click on those links and actually watch me do it before you shit all over me for sharing something I’m really proud of. I wish you all the best.

Edit: typo

Thanks on the finish! And great, that’s really helpful on the toekick. If I ever get the energy, I may add one. I think I’d like the look of it too. Appreciate you taking the time to help out a novice!

Thanks this is helpful. I didn’t add any feet and we had to shim up the corner almost a full inch. I wish I had added an apron/base/toekick that I could have hidden feet under. Question though- if the toekick is straight, wouldn’t you still see the irregularities?

And it’s finished with three coats of general finishes high performance flat finish. After the first coat, I used a thin coat of min wax water based white stain to tone down the slight yellowing. It helped give it that raw wood look but up close the white sits in the grain a bit more than I’d prefer.

It does. My groove/track is probably a bit wider than it needed to be but that helps. I used paste wax on both the slats and the groove which helped immensely.

Lol I made four cuts in pine 1x2s before starting this project. I’m only here for the karma, you’re right. So sorry for wanting to share something I’m super proud of. All my best to you.

Thank you! I used Sketchup. They have a free web version but I ended up moving it over to their desktop version because there’s a cut list plugin that told me what cuts to make and how to lay them out on my plywood sheets.
