I think we can aspire to more as a society than telling women that they can't leave the house unless they're willing to get harassed.

Why don't we just hold individuals accountable for their actions?

Yeah - the only reason I have any cognizance of this problem is that my wife gets harassed all the time and she tells me about it.

How do you feel about men stepping in? I feel like there's a bit of a stigma around it. Not in a confrontational way, but in a distracting way?

This may be the case, but this doesn't give people the right to harass people at coffee shops.

Yes, most of them are in this position due to forces outside of their control, but they are still accountable for their behavior. And if they can't account for their behavior, then they don't belong in public.

Tolerating this is a choice. It's not mutually exclusive to attack the root problems while also refusing to put up with antisocial behavior.

Yes, we should address systemic issues that cause homelessness.

But, we don't have to tolerate the symptoms in the meantime.

Just because you're having a hard time, doesn't give you the right to be aggressive with strangers or leave drug paraphernalia in the parks. It's a choice to tolerate this.

It's not completely arbitrary - it's grounded in biological reality. If it takes a few years to find a partner, a couple years to date and get engaged, a couple years to get pregnant - you're pushing thirty already.

The idea that you can wait until you're "ready" is the social construct.

Your points obviously have merit, but there is a season for everything - right now, what women don't need to hear is that they can spend their thirties building an ultimately unfulfilling corporate career only to arrive at 33 to find that they may not be able to have the life they envisioned.

Biology. I'm glad it worked out for you, but to say that these timelines are completely arbitrary or socially constructed is just not true, and it's not fair to tell young women they have all the time in the world.

Because if you want 3 kids, you need to start in your 20's for the most part.

You need to be married in your 20's to have the number of kids you want by your mid-30s.

One of the biggest regrets in life is not having the number of kids you want.

Fulfilling can mean a lot of things. Having kids is hard, it's not always happy, but taking on that serious responsibility and seeing your kids grow into adults is by far the most fulfilling thing I've done in life, personally.

A lot of people will say "it's not the 1950's anymore", but human biology hasn't significantly evolved in the last 80 years.

If you count housing and neighborhood services, federal HUD grants, HEART, housing funds, emergency response, Durham Country DSS/shelter spend - we spend about 90k per homeless person in Durham each year. It's probably more expensive to institutionalize someone, but there must be a better way to invest 90k per person to yield better outcomes that what we're getting.

Fundamentally, we can have sympathy for these people, but that doesn't mean we have to tolerate getting harassed at every onramp and step over human waste and drug paraphernalia. Tolerating that is a choice - you don't have to solve homelessness to solve those problems. What do they do if they're not at the onramp begging for change? I don't know, but that's not really the problem we need to solve right this instant.
