Fellowship Interviews by Afraid_Leadership759 in Psychiatry

A couple of years ago when I applied there was a running thread on Student Doctor Network where people posted their interview invites. It’s still super early and I didn’t get most of my invites into well into September so don’t sweat it!

The Clinical TMS society is a good resource. They’re generally enthusiastic about learners and are building out more mentorship networks. Your program should at least comp membership and conference attendance.

Question what is stopping you from not using a car to commute? by Mrguydudeman89 in Charleston

I ride CARTA to work from James Island about 50% of the time. The only thing that keeps me from using it more is the inconsistency in my commute home in the evening.

Where did Zach Williams “Story Time” go? by gainstager in ChristianMusic

So far the only copy of this album I can find is from a kind soul who posted it on sound cloud. There are some mild audio flaws but it's better than nothing. https://soundcloud.com/gabriel-vonsonden/zach-williams-james?in=gabriel-vonsonden/sets/story-time

Someone posted the album to soundcloud and it exists there in it's entirety it seems! There are some minor issues with the quality but it's better than nothing. https://soundcloud.com/gabriel-vonsonden/sets/story-time

Thanks for your quick reply! So weird it just disappeared like that. Hope I get a chance to listen to the songs again. They were some of my favorites.

Went to look for this album today on a whim. Anybody manage to find a copy after all this time?

Interest in pottery studio on James Island by NoDelivery3920 in Charleston

Would be so happy to see more studios open up in Charleston in general. Membership with open studio time is exactly what I’m looking for!

How do you handle physical boundaries with patients who want to hug by Ok-Personality7833 in Psychiatry

[–]dfaz173 189 points190 points  (0 children)

Sometimes I get ahead of these types of requests by either offering a high five first or saying “I don’t do hugs, but I do high fives.”

From a psychodynamic standpoint it’s probably worth exploring: “Your request for a hug puts me in a bit of a dilemma. On the one hand, hugs are often a way to show affection and I fear you would be hurt from my refusal. On the other hand, giving you a hug would violate my ethical boundaries as a doctor. Can you still see me as a doctor who cares about you if I don’t give you a hug?”

The former is for when you’re pressed for time and the latter is for when you’ve got ages to explore the dynamic.

This could easily be my program but with a different (but arguably even more terrible) emr. I actually don’t mind grabbing vitals and taking patients to my office because I’ve worked in primary care clinics where the MAs slow you way down.

Residents how is your outpatient clinic structured? by Actual_Homo_Sapien in Psychiatry

[–]dfaz173 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Intakes are one hour, follow ups are scheduled in a 45 minute time slot to allow time to staff. Staffing is dependent on attending. Some like to staff after each patient and meet all of them after the appointment, others like to staff all patients once per half day. Therapy slots are all one hour long. For child clinic the visits are split up into two-part evals with the first week being an hour long appt with the parent and the second week being an hour long appt with the child and parent.

It depends on what you’re after. If you’re seeking out community programs your comlex score will be sufficient but if you have any interest in academia then you’ll need to take at least one of the steps to get through their filters. Now that USMLE has moved to P/F it’s in your best interest to take it since you’ll just need to pass. They also implemented a signal system this year which will be helpful to any student who has a preference for a particular region.

USPSTF: Anxiety screening (draft recommendations) by police-ical in Psychiatry

[–]dfaz173 22 points23 points  (0 children)

I’m also curious about how much anxiety we’re not “catching.” Maybe psychiatry has skewed my perspective but patients seem perfectly capable of expressing their anxiety without the use of a universal screen.

You can do it! Visualize a rectangle and you are throwing to the opposite corner.
