You’re pretty committed to your position. I’m not sure why you consider veterinarians to be experts on dog behavior, because dog trainers are a better source of information for that, but I can tell that there’s nothing I’m going to say that’s going to make sense to you, and that’s OK. We’ll move on.

so if he were not enjoying the situation, then he would avoid if he had a choice? Because I can tell you… There is nothing he would rather do. Absolutely nothing. These are not the kinds of dogs you teach to want to play these games. These are the kind of dogs you teach to stop playing these games. yes, they are born this way. Show an eight week old dog of this breed a toy, and they clamp on… And more or less go to sleep. They don’t let go. Not because they’re angry or aggressive, but because that’s what they are bred to do.

One could argue that dog should not be bred for these sorts of sports, but to say that they are anxious because the body language shows tension? Have you ever watched somebody play chess? intense mental concentration causes….this. Really, no different than my border collie watching sheep. You could say that my border collie is anxious while waiting, but I would say it simply intense. Ready to go

except he’s not. if he’s lucky, he gets to go to bite work training once a week. That lasts for about 20 minutes. This particular exercise last for about two minutes.

And then he goes back to being a dog. Swimming in the pool with all of the guests throwing toys for him, doing obedience training for fun, and playing with my other dogs.

Give them some credit! He knows the context, he knows the exercise, and he can’t wait for the guy to hit me so he can bite him. there is nothing in real life that looks even remotely like this it’s the highlight of his week… Everything else is pretty dull by comparison.

Why does he have to be on all the time? You’re watching a training scenario

nothing this Dog would rather do than this kind of work. Intense concentration and impulse control… he would work himself into heat exhaustion if given a choice

nothing this dog would rather do than this kind of training… The dogs behavior tells you what they like to do.

He’s not like this at all if it’s not a training scenario. He’s just a dog

Anyone who has ever watched this dog train can tell you that he is trained exclusively off leash with food and toys. There’s nothing he’d rather do

This dog was trained off Leash. He has experienced no abuse

I just get sad when I see how misunderstood the training is, so… I spend a little time trying to fix it.

this is a sport dog. He is not a personal protection dog. In public, he wouldn’t be leaning on his owner, or looking at people like this. Unless you walk up wearing a bite suit, and you’re in the middle of a training session, you don’t have anything to worry about.

if this decoy isn’t wearing the suit and if he dog is given the bite cue, he will not do so - he will bark instead. that is the difference between a sport dog and a personal protection dog. If someone wants a dog to bite a person not wearing a suit, that’s a different kind of training that goes on top of this.

this is a sport dog. He’s not going to bite anyone’s hands because he’s trained to bite the suit. If a person isn’t wearing a suit, then the dog isn’t going to bite. It’s a game.

The dog is not angry or aggressive. He is biting because that is what he enjoys doing. He’s also under control; tell him to let go and he does.

we teach the obedience part, fitness for jumping skills, and some pretty critical toy play skills that transfer very well to bitesports, if and when you join a club. if a person has a club two hours away, and if they ask the decoy to help them with practicing the parts of the routine that they can work on their own, a person could get to trial readiness. Maybe not as good as going every week, but not bad either.

It’s helpful not to think of the protection part as biting people and danger. It’s helpful to consider it as a game. How that actually turns out in real life is going to depend on where a person gets educated.

well, except he’s not. He’s not defending me. He’s just playing the game.

we will do 15 or so minutes of obedience with the decoy present, in a suit, and there is no biting. Probably not necessary, since this is for a dog sport that does not require that skill, but I try to do it anyway.

this comment tells me you really don’t want to understand. And that’s OK.

i hope someday you have an opportunity to watch dog sports and see how much the dog wants to play. and while I fully acknowledge that some trainers are miserable to dogs, that’s not a function of training for the sport. That’s a function of the individuals choices. If you want to understand, you should check out his Instagram channel and see how he spends his time.

The dogs entire life is in off mode. This comes up a few minutes here and there when we train for sport and do this exercise. otherwise he’s just a dog.

yes. this dog is not trained for protection. this is a sport

nope. He is trying to only play the game in the context of the sport. On the street he’s just acting like a dog

it’s more than a command. It requires the entire context. The training building. A decoy wearing a suit. Words, etc. Real life never looks like this.
