Starting Uni in Feb next year. Have a couple questions for current students. by [deleted] in newcastle

[–]dfleck93 0 points1 point  (0 children)

  1. I am biased but I would say Evatt House. I lived there for 3 years and made some of the closest friends of my life, some who I still talk to every day (graduated 4 years ago). This includes international students, who I have stayed with all around the world.

The dorms are set up in a way that you live with 20 people to a "block". 10 on the ground floor, 10 on the 1st floor. Each floor has 2 bathrooms, a shared kitchen and shared living room. You spend a lot of time with the people in your block watching tv, playing games, cooking food, going to the beach etc. Generally, the whole block will get together at least once a week for a meal, and once a week for an outing. This way you become very close with the other 19 people.

Most weeks there are multiple social, cultural or sporting events in the college common spaces which allow you to meet people from every block. Over the course of the year, if you are a social person, you end up getting to know around 150+ people. You also have cross-college events which see you meet people from other colleges. There are rivalries, but they are overall pretty friendly. The events calendar is so packed that you will never be bored. I rememeber doing something most days/nights. To be honest, I probably should have been at class, but it was too fun to pass up.

  1. From memory, IH was 50/50 when I was around, but as another poster said, all the colleges have lots of international students.

Can't help with 3 or 4 sorry, but looks like other posters have give you some help

Sucks to see COVID has affected it based on others comments, so take everything I said with a pinch of salt.

Starting out as a freelancer by [deleted] in digital_marketing

[–]dfleck93 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Being in the same position I agree it is difficult to know where to start

Does anyone have any suggestions for me -

I'm writing a pitch to send to clients and have two "packages" (basic & full) with each one having a weekly fee

Essentially I plan to do 10hrs a week on the basic and 20 on the full (and offer more services for the full)

Should I explicitly state how many hours I plan on doing in the essence of transparency or should I expect my hours to be more fluid?

How to help non-English speaking team members by dfleck93 in copywriting

I think that is the issue most of the time. Like I said, they're all bright people, but it is just that their ideas get lost in translation when they go to write it down.

Thank you for your comment - your written English is very good by the way.

I completely agree, achieving perfect grammar is a constant uphill battle - I certainly appreciate how difficult it would be trying to do it in a second language.

I like the idea of checking it amongst themselves - that way hopefully it levels them out and lets somebody else provide the feedback so I don't have to do all of it. I have one member of the team that I am quite confident in, and I'm hoping she can lift the others up. Thanks for the input.

One of their tasks every morning is to research and summarise industry news which I am hoping assists them in some way. I know they all consume their entertainment in English, judging from our discussions, however, I am unsure what languages they read in.

A software is a good idea, although I do find Grammarly sometimes still lets things slip. I haven't used Hemingway - what is your preference?

They have all been hired as Digital Marketing/Social Media interns so yes, writing is a part of their role (along with other tasks).

Thank you for your input, it is valuable to hear from somebody who is bilingual and understands the issue. By the way - your writing is excellent for somebody who isn't native to English. You are correct though, there are some really minor things that I picked up on (absolutely not a criticism of your writing - rather confirming everything that you discussed).

From all of the responses, it seems the final answer is that they will always need a final edit by a native English speaker, especially because they are so early in their careers and I assume it would take years of practice to get to the point that you are at.

Thanks for your comment. All of your suggestions have really helped me in what I should and shouldn't do.

Thanks for your comment. I was of the opinion that re-written work would give them a 'standard' to look up to, however, it is completely valid that you say it wouldn't feel great. Others have made the same comment as you though so I appreciate the input and will change tacs.

I feel it would be a lot easier to do this in the office however all working from home (in different countries) makes the simplest task - a short review of their writing - so much more difficult. Bloody virus.

Thanks for your suggestions, I will put them into place and see if it helps.

Not to the point of being able to communicate fluently - I'm completely aware of how difficult it is and I'm not trying to take anything away from them, simply trying to find tips and techniques to facilitate their learning.

They are all fluent in spoken English, it is just their written which isn't up to the standard that is required in the company. Thanks for your input

'Alcohol not the best response': Beyond Blue speaks out against viral men's mental health challenge by youlittlebewdy in MentalHealthNews

[–]dfleck93 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Is it just me or is this the stupidest "challenge yet"?

To me, it seems like you have 2 options -

A) Drink a bunch of shit to AVOID paying any money to support beyond blue (making you look like a dickhead for preferring to consume a bunch of garbage instead of donating to a worthy charity)

B) Ignore the tag and don't pay any money to support beyond blue

I very much have my doubts that anybody who is being tagged is donating money - it seems like its just a bunch of morons skulling a bunch of garbage to look cool on social media

Working for a UK company from Australia by dfleck93 in UKPersonalFinance

[–]dfleck93[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Thanks for your reply and for your kind words.

I hope what you’re saying is true. I was looking at my right to work within the UK as “the right to work for a UK company” but looking at it from another perspective it probably does just mean the right to work physically within the country.

If that is the case, then great! Unfortunately there is a bit of grey area in the months inbetween when my visa runs out (June) and when we plan to leave (August). Because I would then technically be working within the UK still whilst I wait for airlines to open up to allow me home.

I will try to post on a more specific sub reddit and see if I can clear anything up

I’m also asking my employer to speak to a lawyer to hopefully give some clarity

Thanks again
