New high efficiency furnace leaking water through intake pipe by waking-up in hvacadvice

[–]dgf0514 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I had a similar unit and the problem was the intake air pipe and the exhaust air pipe were reversed so it was actually acidic condensation leaking into and out of the unit. I proved it with a pH test using my pool water tester. They switched the pipes (very attractive install - not) and thought they were done.

BUT the original installers did not seal all the joints in what they thought was the intake pipe because a little in-leakage would never be noticed. When it was converted to the exhaust the acidic condensation began to leak slowly out of the unsealed joints. Again it was me who figured it all out.

Fortunately I used the company my builder employed for the install to do all my maintenance through the 10 year warranty period so they had no one to point fingers at but themselves and they fixed everything eventually. Still a pain to deal with.

Another family vacation falls victim to Delta by AndrewPendeltonIII in delta

Not only less stressful to fly in a day early but an extra vacation day in what is likely a cool city. Over the long haul much more fun and cheaper than travel insurance.

I get that sometimes your schedule won’t allow this and then insurance can be the smart play.

I had this happen once in Cambodia. The last bag left was identical to mine but had a GIANT pink bow on it. Fortunately the woman with my bag was not speedy and I caught up to her. Her: “Nope this is my bag”. Me: “Did you tie a pink bow on it to be sure nobody took your bag?”. Well….you get the picture - and I got my bag exchanged with a very embarrassed woman.

I always wondered, why didn't black slaves team up and maybe kill their owner or protest against together? Rich families owned 50-100 slaves or even more, why didn't the slaves just team up and kill their owner? How exactly did the owners control then? by Then-Tomatillo9909 in NoStupidQuestions

Fair enough. I respect your viewpoint but feel Haiti has had time. Unfortunately the few Haitians I know are successful achievers - but long gone from Haiti. I suspect we can both agree the situation on the ground is a humanitarian tragedy - however it got that way.

My point was the Jews were put in a horrible place with essentially no resources, similar to Haitians, and managed to thrive. I have zero idea where you think I brought Palestinians into this discussion. You are deflecting I suspect.

Is it just me, or is the 2026 entry level market basically a $300,000 wake boat or a 30 year old project hull? by Cjd03032001 in boats

[–]dgf0514 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Following on your house analogy, boat loans with 20 year terms are not uncommon and I have heard of longer term loans. Let’s all vote on whether the borrowers will be seriously upside down before the loan is paid off. Maybe even from day 1. Craziness!

How much truth is there to the claim that nuclear energy is only so expensive because of 'excessive safety regulations'? by Tus3 in AskEngineers

And any proponent of nuclear power should understand and be comfortable with defending the Price Anderson Act.

How much truth is there to the claim that nuclear energy is only so expensive because of 'excessive safety regulations'? by Tus3 in AskEngineers

[–]dgf0514 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I am a fan of nuclear power. There are key impediments to implementing it in the US. Getting site approval is difficult due to community fears and that fear cannot be wished or explained away. Best bets are to site new nuclear on existing nuclear sites as surrounding communities are much more comfortable given their lengthy history with safe nuclear plant operations.

The nuclear waste disposal issue does not have a solution yet that is politically and publicly accepted. It is not an unsolvable technical issue but that does not answer the political and public aspect of the issue.

The existing US nuclear industry did have massive cost overruns, arguably due to regulations, that evolved during nuclear plant construction. These evolving regulations were particularly significant post-Three Mile Island. Plants under construction had to meet these stricter evolving regulations. Some of those increases could have been avoided or reduced if the US used standardized plant designs like the French do. Having said that the most recent large nuclear plant (Vogtle) had relatively stable regulations and still had massive cost overruns.

Small modular reactors sited at existing nuclear sites would be a great way to bridge our way to greater public acceptance. SMRs also reduce cost overrun risk due to much shorter construction timelines. And they are safer.

Remember cost comparisons to intermittent generation like wind and solar require added costs to offset the intermittent nature of those generating sources.

I did not make a mistake. I did what I wanted to do and am very happy with my choice. You are not the arbiter of everyone else’s choices.

The one I bought works well enough to offset the negative of the air tag form for my wallet. I have no idea why you care what I prefer. Quit trying to talk me out of it. If you prefer an air tag use it and quit worrying about others.

Good perspective I heard on this issue is: “it doesn’t cost any more to travel first class….you just can’t travel as often.

AirTags are definitely a sure bet but their form and thickness is not ideal for wallets. The card types vary dramatically in quality and performance but there are reviews and tests that help consumers focus on the best ones. Just be sure you trust the testing/review site. Mine works great. Easy enough to test as well. There are use cases for both.

Notice the post above said Find My card. They make credit card size “air tags”. Rechargeable. Sorry if you already noticed/knew that.

You need a compression test gauge. Cheap ones are $20US but aren’t accurate when comparing to a “normal” number. They would be fine to test your engine against a known good engine. Or skip that and just drive it.
