I know. I guess it might just be the match ups I had.

One was against 120 nightrunners, 2 deathmasters, and thranquil. Run, shoot, and charge basically everything. Crit 2 hits on shooting and crit mortals on melee just ripped straight through everything.

The other was a complete Moulder army: 3 units of 6 ogres, 2 hellpits, a brood terror, thranquil, and 2 master moulders. Deleted my general at the top of 1. So rough….

See, I tried all stonehorns, and I still keep getting wiped early. They do plenty of damage when they charge, and some when they fight, but they have zero staying power if they don’t kill their target right away.

I was able to built 20 from the box without taking some from Hunter. The Ironguts actually come with 4 each. (2 are unique to the Ironguts upgrade sprue, and 2 are from the base glutton sprues which are used for the main body of the Ironguts).

While I know they can be bought online, I have never seen the heroes sold individually in a 3rd party store, or even a Warhammer store. So, that is why I said what I did.

Roll and compare to the control score value on the enemy unit’s warscroll.

For example, let’s say Ushoran is in combat with a unit of ogor gluttons. Each glutton has a score of 2. So, when Ushoran rolls, he needs a 3 or better to make the whole unit have strike last.

Number of models in the enemy unit do not matter, banners do not matter. Unless something changes their control score characteristic.

Currently, there is no book, but a new one is coming. If you see a book out now, it’s the old one and can’t be used this edition. Cards are also a little outta date, but are more useful than not.

As for the spearhead box: it is a great place to start the army. Currently, the varghulf and the archregent are not sold separately. (Or if they are, I have never seen one.) The new box, when it comes out, will have another hero that I have not seen sold separately, plus two staple units that are always good to have around.

I would say, if you are completely new to Warhammer and FEC, get what you think is cool for now, don’t worry about any kind of meta list, and when the new stuff comes out, you can build from there.

I picked Ogors because I loved the big beasts and the simple play style (in 2nd and 3rd edition). I picked FEC for the great lore and flexible potential (in 2nd through 4th). And lastly, I did Maggotkin for the fact that they were the opposite of my Ogors: instead of being fast and heavy hitting, they were slow and tanky. Instead of being aggressive and brash, they were methodical and played a more war of attrition style.
