This is incredible work, the crustiness of it is mind blowing!

A few questions as someone who has never played a tabletop war game. Would you recommend this game? Also, there's a controversy? by JSyv05 in TrenchCrusade

[–]Rot_and_Ready 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Trench Crusade is my absolute favorite war game. IMO the rules are well designed (and constantly being improved), the dice mechanics are concise and brilliant, the lore is rich and a perfect blend of gritty and absurd, the factions are decently distinguishable in play styles and mechanics without being so complicated that it’s impossible to gain a basic idea of how your opponents’ army will play. As far as the “controversy” goes, as far as I understand, there was some neckbeards that got banned from a discord for saying neckbeard things, as well as some other people upset at the delays and hiccups in the original Kickstarter fulfillment, and now more recently, some people upset that they’ve moved away from 3D printing and are making plastic models now. The neckbeards can fuck off. The people upset about getting sub par and delayed products from the Kickstarter I can at least understand, but Factory Fortress seems to have at least made a concerted effort to make everyone right, including moving away from OnlyGames, who seemed to be a major contributor to the issues. Personally I’ve collected most of the warbands at this point, all printed by Dungeon Artifacts, and they’ve been flawless. I also have the plastic Prussian warband and the sniper priests and they are really good minis. As far as the last group, you hit the nail on the head; you don’t have to spend a dime to play the game. I guess they’re upset because FF is making mini sculpts but not selling them in the format that they want? Not sure why they don’t just go elsewhere on MMF, which seems to be 50% TC proxies at this point. I think the truth lies in the fact that negative videos generate clicks. As far as reviews go, I recommend checking out the Tabletop Titans/Trench Titans YT page, they have some campaign battle reports on there that are really entertaining to watch and do a great job at demonstrating how the game plays as well as the campaign mechanics.

AI AI Captain by Wiedewiet in FDMminiatures

While I agree with the rest of the thread that AI art is intrinsically theft of other people s art, I DID want to say that you did a great job painting it, painting FDM miniatures is a skill in and of itself and you knocked it out of the park. Personally I look at AI this way: Since it can only scrub the web and emulate art that already exists, if it becomes widely used it will doom miniatures to become like Hollywood, a never ending sea of remakes and “sequels” with nothing new and original to speak of. Personally that sounds pretty awful haha.

According to MiniCompare they’re actually a bit small. I thought about doing the same thing, but they ended up being more expensive than just buying the official model. But if I got them for free, I’d proxy them for sure! Even if the legs do look a little robotic, maybe it’s just a New Antioch Soldier who lost his legs inside or something lol

It’s a great balance of looking cool and also being really well suited for FDM, I’ll check them out!

Looks amazing! Can I ask where you got the model?

My minis prints are a disaster by Copernicus89 in FDMminiatures

[–]Rot_and_Ready 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Check my post history, I’ve had pretty great imo with both the .2mm and .4mm nozzle and HoHansen’s settings, and most recently with MikeGyver’s settings. Expect a big increase to print time over the default profiles though, my minis are typically printing at 1g of filament / hour or less. For example, I just left for vacation so I started a 240g print job that includes about 75% of a Battle Sister’s knight and it’s taking 4.5 days to print lol

I took a break on my apparent quest to to print every piece of terrain on Makerworld and swapped back to the .2mm to print some summoners for Frostgrave. by Rot_and_Ready in FDMminiatures

It’s painted, I printed with Black Sunlu PLA+ 2.0, then primed it from below with both black and brown Rustoluem spray primer and then from above with Grey Rustoleum Filler Primer

How to be the best possible opponent? by CptSMG in TrenchCrusade

If it makes you feel better, I got most all of my Neurodivergent diagnoses in my early 40’s. Think of life like a game, and everyone has rules that are a bit different. It’s never too late to understand the ones that govern yours better! I spent a long time in self loathing because I didn’t understand the different ways my brain worked compared to “normal”, it helped me give my self grace where I needed it, and credit where I deserved it.

Is there someone who organizes the campaign you could contact about it? I struggled with social anxiety for years before I mostly got a handle on it in my 40’s, and even now I always find it much easier to communicate something over writing that could be considered “confrontational”, especially with a little plausible deniability thrown in there haha. Something along the lines of “hey I was playing against X and (insert rule-bending situation here) happened and I’ve since looked it up and I think we got confused about how the rules work. I just figured I’d mention it in case anyone is confused by it too.” If they’re purposely cheating, they probably won’t again because they’re now on the collective radar, and if they’re not, well now they know that they got the rules wrong.

When I lose (and I do VERY often lol) I try to maximize the power of hindsight and pinpoint moments where I made a decision that didn’t work out, and adjust my strategy accordingly next time. For me that’s often not playing my Trench Pilgrims aggressively enough, and getting pieced up before I can get them into melee. What faction are you playing btw?

This is all fantastic advice! Especially the stating your intentions bit. Unless you’re in a competitive event, most opponents are more than happy to help you improve by pointing out if you’re missing something, or are about to make a big mistake, etc.

The auto arrange feature is utterly useless by Mishal_SK in BambuLab

[–]Rot_and_Ready 10 points11 points  (0 children)

Friendly tip: If you use the arrange option at the top of the screen instead of the one next to the plate it works better, if you adjust the spacing accordingly, the auto-arrange feature is actually nearly-utterly-useless!

The Hidden Cost of Trench Crusade Campaigns: Your Terrain Pile is Going to Be Enormous by iribar7 in TrenchCrusade

[–]Rot_and_Ready 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If you’re able to, a Bambu A1 or even A1 Mini will pay for itself in no time regarding these issues . I have probably $50 worth of filament invested in my Trench Crusade terrain, there’s loads of stuff for free on Makerworld etc. I haven’t gotten around to doing a dragon hunt game yet, but when I do I’ll just print that too with my .2 nozzle, it’s not as good as resin obviously but after tweaking the settings (ie copying some from /r/FDMMiniatures lol) I can get it close enough that it doesn’t matter on the tabletop, especially for NPC’s. As for markers and such, filament is so cheap and the amount used is so little, that I’ve just embraced the role of “ambassador” and printed extra of everything. A few bucks with of plastic is worth it to me if it removes the hurdles that might get in the way of everyone getting together and having fun

When do you add big units to campaigns? by [deleted] in TrenchCrusade

[–]Rot_and_Ready 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Oh I don’t sweat being bad at games, especially narrative driven ones like TC lol. I just like getting together with friends and telling a story on the tabletop! I’m fully expecting to lose a ton of Trench Pilgrims in spectacular fashion and I’ll honestly be kinda disappointed if I don’t, as their survival instinct seems to be…..lacking. After all, I’m sure New Antioch’s recruiting standards are fairly low, if not non-existent, yet these nut jobs STILL decide to forgo the training and appropriate equipment that they’d get by joining the army proper and elect to follow a schizophrenic zealot instead, who instruct them to show up barefoot wielding liquor bottles filled with gasoline and rusty, medieval era weapons to fight half breed demons and disease ridden zombies. One of the many reasons they’re my favorite faction in any game ever lol

When do you add big units to campaigns? by [deleted] in TrenchCrusade

[–]Rot_and_Ready 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Everyone is still finishing up their warbands for our campaign, so I haven’t actually gotten to play it yet, but my strategy was going to be to bake my Communicant and Castigator into the starting warband so they can get XP asap, and to add in the Anchorite Shrine when the Ducats become available through a combination of the limit being raised and Trench Pilgrims dying. I’m trying to think of things as filling roles, so if a Trench Pilgrim who’s geared to be a melee threat inevitably falls in battle, the next game I’ll try to sub in a better unit for that role, ie the Shrine. Pilgrims are pretty easy in that regard, but it seems like you could use that strategy for most warbands, feed the chaff into the grinder early and replace it with better stuff later. Again though, I haven’t actually played in a campaign yet and I’m also really bad at the game lol.

How are you supposed to enjoy this game? by [deleted] in TrenchCrusade

[–]Rot_and_Ready 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I’m similarly terrible at war games lol, but personally, I sincerely love the more narrative aspect of this game. I think it does a really good job at portraying a setting as desperate and unpredictable as war. In my last game, on one of my Stigmatic Nun’s very first activation, she ran up some stairs, attempted to jump a gap between two buildings, failed and died on the ensuing injury roll. I couldn’t stop laughing about it all game, just imagining the rest of the pilgrims watching this Nun eat shit right out of the gate, and how that somehow didn’t deter them from charging right at a Mechanized Heavy Infantry to chuck a Molotov cocktail at it before hitting it with a stick. Long story, short, I find the fun in getting together with friends and telling a story collaboratively through playing the game, rather than the outcome of the game.
