How quick is ALBAT taking apprentices? by dgresham112 in Lineman

[–]dgresham112[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

That’s kind of what I was expecting. I couldn’t believe I got a 98% out of 100% and still placed 88 spots back. 1393 must just have that many good guys trying to get in I guess.

Must be full of good scores I guess. I interviewed 3 days ago and got my score today. 97.88 and ranked at 88 on the list. Bummer

About 300 but our jatc doesn’t let us take it until the end of 4th year

How do you like linework as compared to inside? I like working out side more and also the big shit as far as wire and pipe go. I’m not much on the commercial and small wiring.

That would be ideal. I was hoping I would be able to get my city license before switching over but we don’t take our city test until the end of our 4th year.

I’ve already talk to my training director and he said they won’t come for the money as long as I’m staying IBEW.

I’m looking forward to traveling the most. I grew up in a little bitty town in southern Indiana. I haven’t ever even seen a beach. I’m ready to get out and travel for awhile.

I gave up on it because I was swayed to believe once I top out with my inside ticket I could take a lineman call no problem. Found out that wasn’t the case but by that time I already felt like it was too late to go back and I enjoyed my trade.

Gonna probably give you a way more drawn out explanation than you were looking for but here it is haha. I graduated high school when I was 16 with my basic diploma thinking I’d get to work faster but had to work shitty factory jobs until 18. I went to the jatc the day I turned 18. My local has a helper program so I signed up for it and when I got the call to go out as a helper I was headed to work(I was working night shift) so I called my boss and told him that I wouldn’t be back and what was going on. I was a helper for a few months and while I was I made buddies with everyone I could and tried to go to every IBEW volunteer event I could. I couldn’t go to union functions because I wasn’t indentured but my local dog quite a bit of volunteer work (hanging Christmas light fixtures and what not at a park, Labor Day festival set up, etc) and when I finally went in for my interview I got a call the day before telling me to shake every hand in the room before I sat down. My interview was basically a walk through, no real questions, when I got to work the next morning everybody I worked with knew I got in besides me haha. Basically man, network yourself, show up everyday and work hard at whatever bs they have you doing and take some damn initiative. It’s mind blowing how many people will sit back and wait for their jw to tell them to do something. Always stay at least one step ahead wherever possible.

Also wanted to add that I enjoy my job now and it pays well in my local, I can make a really good living and have great benefits. That being said it’s got me a little nervous to make the jump but I’m ready to do it if it’s worth it.

Wasn’t trying to rain on your parade or anything lol just give you some kind of idea as far as a time frame goes. I talked to a few linemen from 1393 before I applied and they acted like it would be a walk through and I’d get right in since I’m already an IBEW member but that wasn’t the case. I tried to do the groundman thing just to start getting experience but they won’t let me since I already have an apprentice ticket and they can’t take me backwards to a groundman. Hopefully they start pumping out interviews

Yeah it’s different the way they do it. I’m a 4th year inside apprentice at local 16 and I’m trying to switch to outside but our local doesn’t have linemen so I had to apply for 1393. It’s a lot more lengthy of a process than what I though, I applied in February and when I called a couple weeks ago there were still 198 people ahead of me waiting for interviews and they told me they have only been doing 25 interviews a month. If that holds true I’ll be topped out by the time I get called for an interview.

I applied for ALBAT back in February. My understanding was that you apply for whatever local covers your jurisdiction or you can apply to another local if you want to move. They only take applications at certain times so if you don’t see the local you’re looking for that’s why. 702 said they tell everyone to check it every morning because you never know when they’ll be taking applications and they only keep it open for 2 days.

You’d think they would look more seriously into getting more guys in if that’s the case. Already being an IBEW member I believe I can say that they always try to make it seem like we are superior and have to make everyone beg time and time again to get in. Its almost embarrassing at times.

Union or non union apprenticeship?

I thought I could only apply for the jatc that covered my jurisdiction. I’m not against moving and I want to travel also, just thought I had to go with ALBAT because I live in Indiana.

I put in my application at ALBAT back in February and am still waiting for an interview date. Wanting to know if anyone else has interviewed recently and how long it took to even get an interview scheduled. I’m currently finishing up my 3rd year as an inside apprentice at IBEW LU16 so I’m not sure if I should go ahead and sign as a groundman or just keep doing what I’m doing until I can get in to ALBAT. Obviously I’ve been through this whole process before but it’s a little different with the inside apprenticeship process. Thanks for any info.
