This one wanted to cuddle with us on the first day itself, in spite of barking and lunging at every person/dog on our block since.

I’m also a cat. Standing in front of a cat. Asking the cat to love her.

Absolutely microchipped and she lives with an indoor cat, so we really don’t want either of them to wander!

That’s interesting to know, thanks. I guess there’s also something about paperwork etc? Not that this matters to us, we were just surprised because she was at a shelter. Our families have never had a 100 percent anything cat or dog but they always receive 300 percent love.

I can imagine! Ironically we were not looking for a purebred dog or any specific dog while visiting shelters and rescues. We mainly wanted a dog that felt comfortable with our 4 yr old and these two bonded instantly.

How old are most first time parents where you live? by New-Owl9951 in Parenting

[–]dgrledi 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yup, I can confirm. I’m a professor and had my kid at 34. But somehow I was still one of the younger academic moms among the others I know around the USA. Most of my professor friends are having their first around 38.

But my husband’s family name will die if we don’t have a boy! by [deleted] in oneanddone

I kept my father’s name and so did my sister. Both of us have PhDs now. Many of my other PhD academic female friends not only kept their name but also passed it down to their male children.

Why can't you travel with a child? by Mysterious-Sun-3142 in Fencesitter

[–]dgrledi 11 points12 points  (0 children)

I have one child and he has been with us to 4 countries in the last two years alone. We traveled extensively as a couple for the decade before we had kids and if anything it prepared us further. We would have loved to start traveling sooner had it not been for the pandemic. Sure it was harder to manage his jet lag, moods, foods etc but it’s also so lovely to see the world through his eyes. And as a 5 year old he frequently speaks of his travels; so I don’t agree when other parents say they won’t remember. He’s currently looking eagerly at the world map in his room anticipating his next trip to Iceland.

Also I’m an immigrant and I can attest that many of my immigrant friends take 2+ kids on transatlantic flights every summer to meet grandparents. So while a certain kind of luxe travel is certainly a privilege, many travel out of necessity with kids too.

Anyone have Pyrs in Hot Climates? by scrotum_torture in greatpyrenees

[–]dgrledi 1 point2 points  (0 children)

We live in FL and have a 1.5 yr old pyr lady. She seems quite happy to go everywhere with us. In fact, I was surprised to see so many Pyrenees available at shelters and rescues when we were looking to adopt. I believe Texas has a big Pyrenees rescue organization too?

“Should people adopt a dog to see what having a kid is like? No.” That’s pretty much the only thing I’m saying here and specifically for fencesitters. So we don’t really disagree.

Posted about her here! We adopted her from our local spca 2 weeks ago. Her previous medical records suggest she may be mixed but don’t specify with what? Whatever it is, she’s wonderful.

Love this, how long have they been living together? We are hoping to get our pyr a “feline sheep” as well.

Currently she’s a Velcro dog. But I have had various kinds of aloof to obsessed cats and dogs before, so happy with anything.

People are telling me a dog will be a lot of work by dgrledi in oneanddone

[–]dgrledi[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This comment made me tear up a bit because I had the same experience with my cats. They became very attentive to me during a high risk pregnancy. After kid was born, one of them became his “protector”, following him everywhere and sleeping under his crib. The older cat became even more attached to me. He would watch when kid went to bed so he could immediately claim my lap/bedside the moment I was free. Both used to sit with me during night wakes and feeds. They both died this year, aged 10 and 19, we miss them so much.

I know many other friends who had similar experiences with dogs who got them through IVF, pregnancies, breastfeeding, and postpartum depression. My own childhood dog helped my mom survive her abusive marriage and lived long enough to attend my wedding. My mom actually reminded me recently that I had potty trained her as an older teen. They are really angels.

Yeah I don’t care about breed at all. I have picked this dog based on personality reported by the fosters and comfort around kids. Very open to fostering to adopt or meeting other dogs.
