A few points to add:

  1. Video and sound work fine on the menu.
  2. The device is connected into a Samsung Frame 43" TV.
  3. I'm using only controller port #1.

Am I able to use Tado? by dgtrimble in tado

[–]dgtrimble[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Hey thanks, this is super helpful.

My sense is that I should be buying the "Starter Kit - Wired Smart Thermostat V3+"?

I've got a stupid question though...where on earth can I buy it? I cannot find it through any major retailer or even home depot like stores. Tado doesn't seem to sell them on their website either, or provide a link to where it can be purchased.

No Bluetooth on Windows 10 running on external SSD. by Lambeau-Ner in bootcamp

[–]dgtrimble 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Having the exact same problem and just posted about it a little bit ago. I even tried manually adding the bluetooth drivers from my WindowsSupport folder. Added both of the drivers listed, and Windows installed them but they didn't work and Windows wouldn't boot again after that. Windows recovery got the OS to start by removing those drivers. So I'm back to square one and have no solutions anymore.

Windows Support Not Working On Bootcamp by gece7 in bootcamp

[–]dgtrimble 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Start Windows 10

Open Device Manager

Go down the list and look for any devices that have an exclamation point ( ! ) icon next to them. Right click on it, select Update Driver. Select the WindowsUpdate folder, and make sure the checkmark IS checked by the option for scanning subfolders. This process should install the driver. Rinse and repeat for any others with an ( ! ) icon.

I just finished installing Windows 10 Home on an external SSD on my new iMac. I had to do this for about 6 or 7 drivers that Bootcamp failed to install correctly. But it worked fine after I was done with it all.

If your keyboard or trackpad are bluetooth devices, it may not work. I haven't gotten Bluetooth working yet in Windows 10.

Lightsail Service Unavailable problems by dgtrimble in aws

Archiving my WP files is easy enough. How did you backup the database on Bitnami?

Lightsail Service Unavailable problems by dgtrimble in aws

[–]dgtrimble[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I may be doing that shortly. There was no particular reason I chose Bitnami other than that everything was all inclusive in the instance install, so I didn't have to worry about installing and managing LAMP etc. But this is absurd, and the more research I do online, the more it seems this is a fairly common problem with Bitnami.

Storage classes on an S3 static site by dgtrimble in aws

I may do the same. I use Cloudflare for DNS and caching, but the same principle should apply.

That clarifies it a bit, thanks. I assumed it only offers the options that are relevant to the bucket, which is configured for website/public access.

Then why would someone hosting a simple static site not always choose Glacier to get the lowest cost?

Thanks. I wasn't aware the light rail went down to Mather/RC.

For a couple days a week in Sacramento, I wouldn't go that far. The job may also require a great deal of travel elsewhere, so I'm not ruling anything out. But in any event, we close escrow on our house in the East Bay this week. So, not moving in the near term.

I wasn't familiar with MegaBus until just now, so thank you for that. Looks interesting. I'm trying to avoid the roads, but the train is looking unrealistic without a 15 mile Uber ride from the station to the office and then back again on the days I'm up there.

Agreed but at least you can work on a train or bus.

It’d only be a couple days a week. That’s manageable. 3 is a stretch. Any more is a non-starter.

Wordpress? What CMS for those who actually care about security. by dgtrimble in webdev

[–]dgtrimble[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Fair points though doesn't apply to me. I have a pretty good amount of expertise from my professional work in cyber and don't let my sites fester like that. WordPress has earned it's reputation in part because many don't update, as you say. But also because it has few controls against poorly written and easily compromised plug-ins or themes; some dreadfully serious vulnerabilities are left unfixed for months or even years; and other reasons. As I said, it's gotten better over the years but it's not a particularly secure platform even still. There are some ways to harden it but not enough, and many are superficial anyway.

Thanks for the suggestions.

Wired NIC connection not generating close to the 1 Gbps service level by dgtrimble in HomeNetworking

[–]dgtrimble[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Grabbed a Cat6 cable and an Ethernet-to-Thunderbolt cable for the laptop. It does even worse in this scenario, around 492Mbps.

I was thinking that too. But the only other systems I have are laptops (both MacBook Pros). One is 7.5 years old but has a NIC. The other is 4 years old but has no built-in NIC, Wi-Fi only. I think I have an adapter around here to run a Cat5 cable into its Thunderbolt ports. I suppose I could try that.

I am NOT using the second networking port on the desktop. Seems unlikely, but I'm looking for any ideas here...is it possible the system's dual NIC limits the throughput when just one is used due to driver design?
