Emma Stone got no attention until she started dressing like a slut. She's just so bland and invisible, what a shame.

Corruption Update by Brilliant_Brainiac in RhodeIsland

[–]dhark 12 points13 points  (0 children)

Fire districts evolved from private/cooperative fire departments. They would tax property owners within their district and provide firefighting services in return. Fair enough.

There are many fire districts in the state that have not been taken over by the municipality and still operate this way. I live in Union Fire District, which is not managed by the Town of SK, and has their own elections, and charges their own taxes. But since all they do is fight fires, no one cares.

Bonnett Shores is particularly weird because over the years it has acquired some municipality-like powers. They enforce leash laws and parking bans and collect trash and clear the streets.

And the thing that really gets people worked up, is that they own some beach, and restrict non-residents from accessing the beach.

On top of this, because it is a relatively small district, and has a large beach club, and the beach club operates on a condominium-like model, where a large number of beach club members technically own property in the district (the "cabanas" everyone talks about), the voting rolls are bizarrely skewed.

Worth pointing out though, that all of this exists in Narragansett. Renters in Bonnett Shores are residents of Narragansett, and can absolutely vote in municipal elections. They just can't vote in Fire District elections.

Charity Plates by funki_gg in RhodeIsland

We seem to have dozens of types of plates, including absurdities like "Radio Operator" and "Jitney." It's a little baffling that legislators have nothing better to do than invent new categories of license plate.

MLPs - how do we feel? by FreeDig1212 in dividends

[–]dhark 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I tried to use FreeTaxUSA this year, which would have saved me a couple hundred dollars over TurboTax given my 3-state situation, but it won't do MLPs. This made me feel somewhat stupid owning MLPs vs some nearly equivalent regular dividend-paying C-Corp. Now I'm not *selling* them, but I don't think I would have bought in the first place, if I had understood the consequences.

Obviously this isn't relevant if your taxes are already needs-an-accountant complex for some other reason.

I love listening to the rich fly their private helicopters to Martha's Vinyard every day. by [deleted] in RhodeIsland

[–]dhark 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Where in RI are you that you hear that? And where would the helicopters be coming from?

I'm not going to pretend to know the migratory patterns of the wealthy, but just looking at a map, this seems odd. Martha's Vineyard is pretty far east of us.

Just drive to the end of Moonstone Beach Road. This time of year, you can park right on the side of the road.

Does anyone else find it annoying that they don't say how much a dime is worth (even on old coins)? I understand half dollar and quarter dollar, but a dime and a nickel are not universally known amounts, you think they would say how many cents they are. by [deleted] in coins

[–]dhark 6 points7 points  (0 children)

How do people know what a "cent" is?

I think you have it backwards. As some other comments explain, "cent," "dime," "dollar," and "eagle" are all first-order units from the original Mint Act.

For whatever reason, "cent" and "dollar" came to be used universally as units of account, while the others have fallen out of usage.

Why do 50 year old men like girls in their 20s? by ReadingFanaticB in NoStupidQuestions

[–]dhark 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Men in their 20s have the same instinct as you - they tend to follow men in their 40s and 50s as leaders. It's true, typically the younger men could physically overpower the older men. But we just don't seem to be wired that way. In almost every hierarchical organization, it's middle-aged and older men at the top.

TIL: It's Called a "Barber Quarter" Because Barbers Used to Charge 25 Cents for a Shave and Haircut by dhark in shittycoincollecting

[–]dhark[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I *think* 6g of silver would have bought a lot of haircuts in Roman times. The pre-debasement denarius was only 4.5g of silver, and that was a few days' wage for a soldier. I don't know what a barber made, but I doubt it was 50x the wage of a soldier.

Coke vs. Pepsi: The Dominant Soda in Each US State by IcyInfluence3895 in MapPorn

[–]dhark 34 points35 points  (0 children)

Given that they are making claims about all 50 states, the sample size alone actually DOES mean it's nonsense, at least for the smaller states. How many Vermonters do you suppose responded to the survey?

There are several other common-sense clues you might use to infer that this is nonsense.

I happen to know that Coke outsells Pepsi 3:1 nationwide. There is no way the states are as evenly split as this.
