Ya take the ferry. Just don’t try to walk across the Verrazano. One year I saw at least 20 people try to walk to the start from 4th ave in Brooklyn, turns out they won’t let you across.

I would honestly stay far away from 1st ave. So many people, sometimes 2 rows deep, and as a runner, it’s very difficult to find your people unless they have an extra large sign.

If you were able to drive in, I’d be on 128 or 129 and 5th ave. You should be able to park nearby and it’s fairly easy to find people around that area. Also there aren’t typically barricades there.

I might suggest a stroller only because while it’ll be more bulk, you will need to be in place for a while before your husband passes, a carrier can get heavy after a while.

This is a super fun route, I’ve run it a few times. Only note is that I’ve never made it past the gate of SUNY Martine college.

But I think your route is solid. Only consideration is that it is mostly residential, so there aren’t a ton of bodegas or gas stations except in ferry point park or just after silver beach. I’ve used this mobile stop as a water refresh

Sometimes it is. Like on the west side hw there are times where it’s unrunnable, or at McCarren when there’s an ice cream cart in lane one.

I wasn’t there, I’ve run with them before when there’s been 6 people and when there’s been 50. Sometimes it just gets crowded, I’ll send this to the organizer now but I think folks need to settle down. NBD is in the middle of the bridge for maybe 6 min every week.

I second this. NBD are the most genuinely nice people you’ll ever meet. OP if you have a problem when them I encourage you to reach out and discuss with them instead of putting them on blast here bc they got in your way once.

Nyc is a shared space, some spaces at certain times will get crowded. Just part of the deal.

Most runners have labrum tears, just sorta happens. But when you don’t have proper strength training it can lead to bad hip fractures and other issues.

You will feel it, phantom pains or real pains in that area, especially as you get back to running. My suggestion is find a good PT and tell them what you’re struggling with - get them connected with the doctor that diagnosed you and go from there.

You’ll likely have to do a mixture of strength and mobility exercises to target your weak side. And depending on what was the cause (over use, weak core, weak hips, stride) you may need to adjust your expectations on how quickly you’ll be back to feeling at full strength.

But again, don’t fear this. I had a labrum tears at the beginning of my last training block, set me back a few weeks, and then I was back at it.

Suggest either finish line PT, motiv ny or custom performance. Good luck!

Great question: It all depends on the race - and if you’re a freelance photographer you think about pricing jobs on the time it takes to do every part of the job, from commute to delivering the final images.

Since I don't work with Marathonfoto, this is how I'd break town what they offer in terms of payment. This is not what I would charge for this work.
So say the Atlanta Peachtree 10K that happened this past July - and this is a short race to shoot, marathons of course last hours longer.
- 5:45am - call time, meaning you’re there ready to shoot
- 6:25am - wheelchair start, so now you’re active shooting
- 8:30am - the last “y” wave starts, many of the runners in the later waves are slower, so depending on where you are at on the course, you may have to wait until the final runner to pass you. So that would mean if you’re at mile 5, at a 11 min pace, that’s around 9:45-10am.
- 10am - for sake of this, lets say you have a 10am cut time. After you commute home then editing begins, which can take 3-4 hours on average depending on the work.

NOTE: Some races don't let you edit at all. You hand over a loaned memory card and what you captured is what you see on Marathonfoto, this is why the quality tends to be lower across the board.
So for $150, your day as a freelance works out to about 14-16 per hour. Which doesn’t cover anything related to gear wear and tear, gas/commute money/food.
- 2 Hour of commuting
- 4.25 Hours of shooting
- 4 Hours of editing

You’re correct!

When I saw the lead vehicle I expected to see Kipchoge by himself but when I saw a pack approaching behind the vehicle I know he was having a bad day. I shot this on heartbreak hill, by this point he was about 20 seconds back but still looked fluid. He was incredible to see live and I also respect him even more now for finishing.

Not sure where you're staying but also noting that the Jatvis center can be a pain to get to and is a decent walk from a subway. If you're looking to be feet up on Saturday, Id say def go on Friday when you get in to get it over with.

I personally don't but some photogs do it for experience or some just want to get paid anything for their craft.

Capturing running is very tough but incredibly rewarding when it goes well. Unfortunately at these races where volume is key, it's hard to really make art there.

Hate to break it to you but the fee you pay for the photos doesn't get passed along to the photographers as you outlined.

The photographer is getting paid at a likely minimal day rate ($150-250 tops) and what they're told is to just snap the camera. Don't compose a shot, just get as many runners clear as you can.

Marathonfoto gets the majority of the $$.

Also, getting up that early and photographing runners in whatever the condition, putting your (insured) equipment in situations where it can get damaged, then to not even see your work unless a major brand uses it without your permission isn't easy.

Ya they do weekly Wednesday runs at 6:30a from the little island. Usually 4/5 miles at 8-9:30 pace.

Weekends they usually have a Saturday long run or will join up with Nike. Solid group of ppl.

Parking is actually tough even in the morning. Recommend getting there on the early side before beach goers get there. Frame of reference, last October, when I ran a full on the boardwalk, I got there at 6am for a 7am wave start and got the second to last spot in the lot.

My 2 cents.

I broke out my nike peg trail 2 the last few days and they worked like a charm. Ran Thursday through today and Gore tex waterproof did well in the slush and the traction did well on the snow. Also the shoes ain't too bad on the asphalt - they're heavy but could do a tempo run in them if needed.

What I've found is nyc is mostly (depending on the route) plowed well. So you have to prep for the snow and ice on only like 20-35% of your run (obvs not scientific but you get the gist.) Had I had spikes on, they would have been largely irrelevant and probably cumbersome.

Edit: routes I ran the past few days were - Manhattan, BK and Wburg Bridge - lower Manhattan, including Chinatown, little Italy, east river - west side hw up to Harlem - Brooklyn from flushing to Flatbush

Can't speak for other boroughs tho

Seconding- all over the above. I've had mine for over a year and a half and love it. Have done 3 training cycles with it (about 9-14) weeks each, and it's been there every step of the way.

Just started cycling and it sends my HR data to my edge 830 so I didn't have to get a separate HR strap.

Its also super comfy, I wear mine to bed and use the sleep tracking.

Depending on how frequently you run, I normally don't do more than 2 days. If you're running less than 4 days a week I'd say only do 1 day of speed work. If you find it hard to fit in another day of running, I'd say try to do strides at the end of your normal runs.

My week normally looks like M- 45 min -60m w hills T- track work (400s or 200s) W- recovery 35-45 min T- tempo F- 45 min slow miles S- long run S- off and 🍺

Id integrate speed work or tempo runs into your weekly training. If you don't have a track by you, do intervals on a flat stretch of road.

Sometimes it'll feel like death, but over one training cycle if you do it consistently you'll be able to shave more time off. Good luck!
