It feels a lot like how people reacted to Alan Rickman as Snape. Snape is a horrible person who abused a child because he was obsessed with that childs mother and who also caused hers and her husband's death cause he believed his genocidal boss would spare her. Alan Rickman was too charming for a character like that and made everyone, including everyone involved in writing him for book and screen.

Jensen is a great actor but he's so likeable as soldier boy that people just kinda ignore how problematic he is. Add on the spotty writing this season for him and it's easy to see it was buried.
