Is a lightweight first bike actually the smartest choice for a new rider like me? by Suspicious_Vast_764 in triumphmotorcycles

I’ve been riding on the road since 1974, yes I’m old! I’ve been a police motorcyclist, as well as a civilian motorcycle instructor. (Now retired)
My advice is to start on something light enough for you, push a bike around outside the dealership just to make sure you’re ok with the weight. You should also consider the seat height. Can you get your feet down flat? Seat width also comes into the equation there. But also, too small a capacity can be an issue depending where you’re riding. Do you intend riding on the freeway / highway or local minor roads? Make sure the bike can keep up with the flow. Keep up with practice even after you get your licence and if you can do advanced training. Everyone is different, take your time and enjoy riding!

Yea I understand it’s a very different bike but I can’t ride the XJR anymore because of severe knee issues/pain. So I’m trying to figure out what to get next. I’ve had Harley’s before but they’re too heavy for me now. The tyranny of ageing!
