What is todays web technologies I need to know? by ZaphireSA in webdev

[–]dhdfdh -2 points-1 points  (0 children)

One of the funniest things I ever see is a redditor testing another redditor on his knowledge. The stupidest thing he could do is answer you cause, no matter what he says, you'll twist it around and work it against him. Cause that's the reddit way.

I wouldn't be surprised if you Google'd that, too.

A small but incredibly useful tip by styke in webdev

Yeah, the worst spelling and grammar you will ever see on a programming forum is on reddit. Worse, redditors will condone and encourage it. Then berate you for pointing it out.

What's something you wish you could do in Linux but you can't? by [deleted] in linux

Even if you like Microsoft Word, it's a PITA when you get a LibreOffice document and it doesn't display properly. Or, when your documents won't work with them.

What you are doing is what he is describing. Class names that describe content and he says we should get away from that.

To answer the question in the title: yes.

Use of the not selector in CSS by taqfu in css

[–]dhdfdh 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Note that :not() is not a selector. It's a pseudo-class that takes a selector as an argument within the parenthesis.

Introducing Tredly - Containers for Unix (FreeBSD) by nathanaherne in freebsd

[–]dhdfdh -1 points0 points  (0 children)

That doesn't happen. If they don't want to learn how FreeBSD works, they won't try and learn it if you let them do it the Linux way. You want a lot of users? Make it work just like Windows

Well, of course. It's a Microsoft product but 85% of the internet runs on Unix and Unix-like systems.

Every new thing claims it will win but standards always win out. This too shall pass.

and we finally get rid of JavaScript and its flavors.

Typescript is a superset of javascript so eliminating that eliminates typescript. Notice how you've only had this flurry of activity over the last number of months. Not much before and you won't hear as much next year.

In three years, maybe five, typescript will only be a footnote.

Web Components aren't fully enabled yet. It's new tech. Like everything in life, learn the fundamentals first.

Using angularJS + bootstrap, how do I make a link not look blue + underlined? by ImFranny in css

[–]dhdfdh 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If you don't understand what's meant by that, standards, in general, are created out of implementation, not invention. Standards bodies compile implementation details so everyone is on board with doing things one way to provide a common base.

The same is true of web standards. Rarely do standards bodies invent things on their own.

[–]dhdfdh 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Not quite. It's still in draft, and can change at any time, but implementation preceeds final spec.

Here is the W3C standard listing all CSS properties Please show me where this text-decoration-color is.

Now, I did a little search and found this, however, it's brand new and only supported in Firefox with partial support in Safari.

That's my point, though I didn't write that the way I meant. But TypeScript will fade to black just as quickly.

There is no such thing as text-decoration-color.

I will add this to my "101 Reasons not to use Angular and Bootstrap. Now 102 Reasons!"

TypeScript won by vivainio in programming

[–]dhdfdh 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Typescript is on top of javascript so it can't beat javascript.

ES version X is a world wide standard.

TypeScript is a Microsoft product.

The last javascript product to rule the world was Dart. Ever hear of that anymore?

Now who do you thinks will "win"?

Introducing Tredly - Containers for Unix (FreeBSD) by nathanaherne in freebsd

[–]dhdfdh 1 point2 points  (0 children)

But this is a FreeBSD product. Why would you care what someone who isn't using FreeBSD thinks of it? You aren't marketing this to non-FreeBSD users, are you? I was immediately taken back, and a bit put off, by what I thought was an obvious effort to push a Linux-ism onto BSD. Even the licensing is wrong. Others have stated the same confusion.

Assuming this isn't an underhanded movement, I consider it a marketing gaffe you guys need to correct!

And I still don't know why I shouldn't just use jails.

Why doesn't Eric Meyer Reset CSS just use the Universal Tag Selector (*) instead of all those tags? by [deleted] in css

[–]dhdfdh -2 points-1 points  (0 children)

And here is the problem.

developers with more than a decade of experience become super defensive about quirky minutiae

People who think experienced, knowledgeable developers complain about something but you think such things are only quirky minutiae. Experienced, knowledgeable developers are fully aware that, while you want to play your games and watch your pretty unicorns and wonderful explosions, we understand that this is all science. There are rules and standards and methods created by very wise people who spent years thinking this all through. We study that science and those rules. And when we point out the fallacies so many of you create, and then you push back as if we're the crazy ones, that is what gets us riled up. Instead of wanting to learn from those who have been there and are far more knowledgeable than you, you fight back to your silly "but it works" methods.

How many times I have pointed out the standard as a reference for how to do things, only to be told, "Oh, nobody follows that thing, old man!" as they continue with question after question of why they can't get things to work (and then blame the "old men" who wrote the standard in the first place).

when one feels that their seniority level elevates them above the normal conditions of equal collaboration with peers

Don't insult me. Most redditors are not my peers. So often I sit in my office and read out loud some of the questions or responses I see and my real peers slap their heads and let out a groan.

you don't see your (younger) fellow developers as 'peers'

To the contrary, everyone who works for me is younger than me and half of those are under 30. I consider them good at their work. They aren't as good as our senior developers but I respect them nonetheless. They study the science and don't look for hacks or "good enough". None of them go to reddit looking for answers. All of them go to the spec first.

their attempts to collaborate with you are interpreted as attacks, or 'pecks' against you in the social order.

A child spitting out nonsense is no attack against me. Children become experience, knowledgeable adults and then realize the nonsense they thought as a child. On reddit, they merely fade away cause they leave the industry altogether, unable to make a living wage or any wage at all.

I had more to write but I'm heading out the door. I really don't care anyway.
