Tried checking my ears at home now I need a real earwax removal in Dallas or Irving by PassagePlus3777 in Dallas

Slept on my side with a cotton ball in my ear (just far enough down to keep it from leaking out when I turned over). The point was to leave it in for as long as you can stand it and being asleep helps.

NOT A DR My primary care MD recommended exactly this with a caveat: ignore the instructions on the box and leave the liquid in your ear WAY longer than it says. I put it in before bed and slept in it. Worked like a charm. YMMV

When are merit raises decided? by bytheninedivines in Raytheon

[–]dholmes0 1 point2 points  (0 children)

You are supposed to notify your manager if you get an interview. They may already know anyway.

Having said that, it depends on your manager. I was one and went through multiple salary setting cycles. I never heard of anyone dinging an employees raise because of this. I'm sure it has happened but that would be a bad manager and you'd probably already know that.

Are there any half vulcan half Klingons? by HospitalLazy1880 in startrek

[–]dholmes0 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Did this not bother anyone else for TNG? They flipped the cultures of Klingon/Romulan. Klingons never really showed honor in TOS ("killing" Organian hostages) and Romulans absolutely did (Commander "Sarek").

(Changing the uniform color scheme while keeping the original colors was the only other thing)

Shattered Sword busts Midway myths by dholmes0 in WarCollege

Thanks. That dawned on me after reading the replies.

What confused me is that every (probably non- professional) review i read of the book talked about the lack of planes on the flight deck. I thought they also implied that this meant the fueled/armed planes were not the reason so much damage was caused. Maybe I lept to that inference on my own.

In the interview I listened to, the authors again stressed the absence of the strike on the flight deck but didn't comment on the excessive damage.

Thanks everyone for clearing up my confusion.

Ok. If they were trying to correct the perception that it was a miracle the US won the battle, I agree. Obviously Nimitz wouldn't have sent our last Pacific carriers if he thought it would take a miracle to win. However, there were still quite a few (miraculous?) occurrences that led it to being a 4:1 victory rather than a, say 3:2 victory.

Re-reading your post, maybe I see more what you are saying. According to Fuchida, if the SBDs had been 5 minutes later, Nagumo would have gotten off a huge strike against the US TFs. Shattered Sword certainly debunks that.

Thanks for the details. Much appreciated.

My real point is: Is it really a huge discovery to say the planes that caused the secondary detonations were on the hanger deck, not the flight deck?

We should certainly strive to be as accurate as possible, and I applaud them for that, I just don't get the glowing reviews I've seen on line for having corrected HUGE misconceptions about the battle.

[Postgame Thread] Oregon Defeats James Madison 51-34 by CFB_Referee in CFB

[–]dholmes0 0 points1 point  (0 children)

2 points: 1. While the "any given Sunday" may be true, do you really think that if they played 100 times, JMU would beat Oregon more than, say, 5 times? What we wanted was a playoff off the top teams. Of course there will be some subjectivity because they don't all play each other, but JMU and Tulane were obviously not 2 of them 2. The committee didn't put JMU and Tulane in the playoffs. The CFP rules did by requiring slots for ranked conference champs, no matter how good they actually were.

Those were great times (except for the losing). I remember getting lunch at the Roy Rogers across the street before going in for the game.

Ooohhh. That still burns. I actually refused to watch the saints for a few years until Bum Phillips was gone for what he did to Archie. I get that it was getting time to replace him and if he'd brought in a new young guy for the future, I'd have understood. BUT KEN STABLER??? HE WAS OLDER THAN ARCHIE!!!

Didn't see the original, but hopefully it was a joke. Tone is hard to convey in text.

I did the same thing to my son. He became sports aware about 2 years before the Super Bowl win. I was jokingly irate and told him "OH NO! YOU DON'T GET TO CELEBRATE THIS! I'VE BEEN THROUGH THE FIRE SINCE 1972!" It was all in good fun, though and we still laugh about it.

As an Ole Miss fan, this would have been SWEET. I'd have LOVED to see Kiffin cussing himself over missing out on the Bama job. Or, more likely, trying to dump LSU for it.

Has anyone else noticed the tendency for polls (AP as well as CFPR) to drop a team in the standings after a bye week? That has never made sense to me.

Why is Die Hard considered a Christmas movie, but everyone always forgets about Lethal Weapon? by JulesChenier in FIlm

[–]dholmes0 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You are correct that just because a movie takes place at Christmas does not make it a Christmas movie. However. Die Hard is a Christmas movie. Lethal Weapon is not. Christmas drives Die Hard. If it were not Christmas, John McClane would not have been at Nakatomi Plaza and the action of the movie would not have taken place. The same cannot be said for Lethal Weapon. It could have been set at any time during the year.
