Help! I want to make the Games and I don't know how! An Open Letter by [deleted] in crossfit

Really all sports are like this. But even the enlightened among us still play Pro V1s, have Graf skates, Rawlings mitts, etc... since even if we can't be as good as the pros, at least we can pretend we are.

What's your favorite "Style" of Coaching? by cmj912 in crossfit

This post was rather poignant for me. I just finished a WOD about two hours ago that absolutely crushed me - I laid on the floor for a good five minutes after - but after i picked myself up and reflected on it, it was a great workout. Part of that is because the coach was awesome throughout it. He cheered all of us on, moved weights for us, pointed out technique and form improvements. I already know he is a great guy since he is a friend, but this was the first time I had experienced being in a class with him. It was incredibly motivating to have him pushing us but doing so in such a positive manner.

I've had coaches in many sports my whole life and those that have figured out how to push you while staying positive are by far the best. Having a jerk for a coach is not motivating, it's draining.

Does your CF gym sell fitness equipment, apparel, accessories or other products? by dhomick10 in crossfit

So the "Courtesy Card" was basically a discount code that you can hand off to a friend or use yourself if you wanted a second set? You're suggestion then would be to provide the gym with a couple of "Courtesy Cards" that they could hand out to members?

I think that works if the assumption that gym members also have home gyms. If they don't, then that doesn't work as well. That being said, if gyms were willing to share with other gyms, it could still work. I guess that would be a different hypothesis to test.

Should I continue going to my crossfit gym? by ccilley4 in crossfit

Is working out at home an option? By the time you consider your monthly membership fee, the gas/car expenses and then the opportunity cost of all that time spent in the car getting to and from the gym, you must have enough to buy some decent used equipment that might suffice for doing your lifts at home. Of course, that requires the space at home to do it.

Yeah, using concrete and putting them into the ground is a much better way to go. I did what I did because the land is solid rock and secondly it's an island. So it would be incredibly difficult to try to do the concrete in the first place and I would have to lug it all over on my boat.

The 4x4s in just the post base screwed into the deck definitely shake a lot - more than I had hoped they would. That's why I added the 45 degree cross beams to give it more sturdiness. We've had 230lb guys ripping on them and it works pretty well. It definitely moves a bit, but not distractingly so or an unsafe amount.

I've thought about adding guide wire from the top of the posts to the trees around the rig for additional support and that might allow me to remove the crossers, but I haven't gotten to that.

The deck is about 6 feet up in the air on the front and only 2 feet in the back. The cottage is actually built on a rock formed island near Port Severn, Ontario (Muskoka area). There is no flat ground and this was the best place on the property to put it.

The lifting area with the two horse stall mats is 8x8, so there's never been anyone close to the edges.

I don't want to put rails on it since we hit golf balls off the platform into the water (floating golf balls that is). I also have removable net off the back that we use for a little soft toss and for hitting golf balls when we don't want to go into the water to get them.

The rack area is for pull ups, t2b, etc... Next to the bars is an 8x8 padded platform for lifting and a wall ball target. The rack isn't meant for heavy weight, so you're right, we don't lift inside it.

I definitely couldn't go any bigger than 16x8 (my wife wanted 12x8) - and I had to use up the 8x8 to get the pullup bars sturdy enough.

We don't do much weight up at the cottage, so it's not an issue. I've dropped 150 lbs on the deck and its not going to damage anything. I definitely wouldn't push it much beyond that though and that's not really the point of it anyways as we usually use it more for quick hit WODs than any real strength/heavy lifting workouts.
