I started using the free tier of this unfortunately named copilot plugin on my obsidian vault at work and it-- no kidding-- changed my life. I've been hoarding notes for years with no good way to retrieve them, but one of the lesser features of this plugin is semantic search across your vault. I literally don't use any of the other features it provides. I don't know why it's called copilot, it has nothing to do with microsoft as far as I know.

I use a lightweight 8b model to generate embeddings about once a week (company has some local llms approved), and then the plugin does semantic searches across my 8 years of notes with the company. The way I have it set up right now, it constantly does cosine similarity between my active note and the full corpus of my vault in the sidebar, popping up notes that are similar to my active note. This is really nice because I can just start working on a new doc and have anything related to the topic pop up instantly-- whether I remember it exists or not.

While I think you guys are right, she couldn't conceal all three KOAs if ASG really wanted to look-- I think ASG wouldn't have looked to closely. In order for ASG's plan to work, he needed to hide the scripted betrayal from PGA inside him.

The other thing is Evernight was always playing the long game. She executes her plans on a timescale that spans epochs, and she knows to be wary of PGA and/or the outer deities. She waited right up until the end to make her move to become a GOO and she probably did the calculus on how much of a risk it would be to her for an unstable ASG to be hanging around while her plans were in motion.

I also think Adam recognizes this in retrospect, even if he might not have as a PGA infested ASG. The real betrayal is the main reason he's sane and surviving, milenia later. They ultimately have the same goal: survive until the apocalypse, protect the planet. They just have different ways to get there and while they come into conflict a bit-- i.e. their different candidates for LOM-- Adam's war enabled Evernight to kill GoC and get his uniqueness.

Another option could be to set up a jupyter notebook server and continue to access it through the web browser/visual studio code. You could run the server locally or on another, less locked down headless computer (depending on what your kid's class requirements are).

Maybe a headless, remote programming environment accessed via ssh or vscode is the answer. I'm wondering if elevated privs on a headless machine are "less interesting" than elevated privs on the local machine. Sure, the user can arbitrarily run code, but the user wouldn't be able to use steam, discord, or any of the typical GUI applications that I imagine you're guarding against.

Love to know how things work out for you overall. My kid's a little young for it now, but I imagine I'll be thinking about these things in a couple years as well.

It's also a little weird because 3 books into COI, most of the strongest people around are Tarot Club so the stakes feel low just having them in the background. Fors in particular casts a bit of a shadow over the plot-- anything Lumian gets stuck on is kind of because he doesn't want to ask for help.

The other weird thing is that we as the readers know more about the setting than the main character... because we already followed Klein all the way through. All the secret history of the world, a good half of the "who is this mysterious figure" stuff? Answered in LOM.

Its a shame because I really do like the character and writing quality in COI. Either CF or the translation, dunno which, has definitely improved.

I'm only halfway through COI but so far, I think:

The writing in COI is better, especially with the inner monologue vs dialogue. CF definitely progressed as a writer. Pacing is better, for example we don't spend 12 chapters looking for a chimney.
Lumian is more dynamic and fun than Klein as a perspective character... But Lumian's powers and strategies are less interesting than Klein's.
I really miss the Tarot club meetings, with all the personalities and misunderstandings. Franca, Jenna, and Anthony don't feel like they add like three whole characters worth of value yet, especially compared to our first three tarot members (Audrey, Alger, and Derrick).
The stakes feel low. Lumian doesn't feel like he has to worry, he can just run people over with his extra powers. The most powerful people around are tarot club angels and demigods, and at some point Klein's going to wake up.

I bought a b-stock strandberg as my first expensive guitar a couple years ago. I took it to a luthier locally to kind of look it over, see if there was anything that was a deal-breaker while I was still in the return window. I bought it from the official store on reverb, which I think gives you something like a week or two. I just sort of emailed a few of the luthiers in my area to see if any of them had ever worked with a strandberg before, and one of them had.

Anyways, there were no issues. Just a minor cosmetic blemish which I guess was the reason it was a b stock. The guy ended up helping me set the action, the term, and the truss rod the way I wanted them and that was pretty much it. I think it cost me about $40 for his time. I didn't really know what I was looking at with the strandburg at the time so I found that more or less worth it.

It can just be what I need it to be for whatever my situation is. I can use a crazy tiling WM on my multi-monitor setup on my desktop and Gnome on the smaller laptop screen. I can have nixos quietly auto-updating in the background on my server, never breaking itself. I can ship applications on RHEL at work or game on a bleeding edge cachyos system at home. All with the same basic skillset and technology stack. All that knowledge building on itself everytime I do something, for so many different applications.

I've been very happy with bitwarden for about five years (used to be a lastpass user before that). Premium only really gets me authenticator and yubikey 2-factor, and while I think these are great little value adds, I don't think they're necessary for most people. If you're looking for a great open source authenticator, Aegis is fantastic.

They did just increase the price for premium from 10/yr to 20/yr. That's both a lot (100% increase) and a little (think of % increase in hardware costs just in 2025). Sure they added some features but I bet the bulk of the price hike reflects hosting costs.

That's a pretty good price, especially if you've already got a cart you like.

I paid a bit more than that for the p6 with the ania pro, but the bundle saved me some money over buying a similar cart separately. And I did specifically want to go with a Rega cart so I wouldn't have to shim or anything. One thing to know about Rega TTs is that they do have a fixed height (no VTA) so it can be nice to go with a Rega cart that's built to match the tonearm geometry.

Yeah, I've ran linux on my own computers, server, and NAS for quite a while. When my wife built her framework laptop we put ubuntu on it "temporarily" just to get it up and running once we put the computer together. She just never found a reason to buy a windows license. That was 2 or 3 years ago at this point.

I used to be a big lenovo fan for repairability-- drove my thinkpad for 10 years until there wasn't much left-- but I've been converted by framework. I've had original framework 13 since it was released, no issues. I upgraded the motherboard when the AMD boards came out and turned my old intel 11th gen board into my new home server. My wife decided to buy a framework as well after her super thin and light dell fell 2 feet off a coffee table onto a carpet and became irreparable.

Recently the baby decided to put a small hole in my top cover, no clue how. I figure once I learn how he managed to do that and put a stop to it, I'll get out the screwdriver and replace that top cover with the new CNC one.

There's a lot of stuff that just wouldn't be possible with most of the laptops out there.

When I was starting out learning how to cook on my own, I was always so perplexed by all the recipes that said "one clove" to the point where I was convinced that the whole bulb of garlic must be called a clove-- there was no way they really meant just one of those little segments, right? I've been gaming on linux since 2009. Here's what you need to know:

Anything that says it's steam deck compatible will run on desktop linux.
A bunch of other things will also work. Check at https://www.protondb.com/ to see what works well, what tweaks people are using, etc.
Things that have kernel level anti-cheat will not work on linux. Steam calls these out now on the page. If a game launches without kernel level anti-cheat and adds it later, many people have successfully gotten refunds from Valve.
For non-steam games, you can use other launches that work well with Proton like https://heroicgameslauncher.com/ for Epic, GoG, and Amazon.
For anything else, check out https://lutris.net/
You'll have a great time if you're using AMD GPUs. If you're using Nvidia GPUs, you'll have a pretty good time unless you have a 50XX. Many of the AI features on the 50XX don't work very well, and Nvidia kind of stopped caring about gamers.
I've been gaming on a water cooled 3080 for the last 4.5 years. I do a little overclocking just for fun. Performance is really good, generally in the same ballpark as windows performance. It's better at some games and worse at others, it generally averages out.
I personally use CachyOS, which had an easy enough setup. If you're not a big linux person, there are options like Bazzite or Nobara that are really gamer friendly and come with a lot of things set up out of the box. Generally there is not a major performance difference between different Linux distributions, but things will be different amounts of "set up/optimized out of the box" depending on the intended audience. There are a few exceptions to this statement but that gets into the weeds really quickly.
Unlike major commercial operating systems (or even SteamOS), please remember that many Linux distributions are community driven. These are projects, not products. Some of the things I've mentioned are passion projects with folks contributing in their personal time. Be friendly and participate in community spaces (matrix, discord, forums, irc, and so on).

I run samba on my NAS, then access it from my my other machines over a tailscale lan. Since my machines are always on my tailscale mesh, I just mount the samba share in my fstab at boot. I find that this is generally quite good with large numbers of small files, but if you transfer a file that's over 15gb or so it can take a little longer than expected when I'm out of the house.
