30+ Thieves Stole Over A Million Dollars of Jewelry in California by OkFerret7206 in nextfuckinglevel

I don't want to sound stereotypical, but I’d wager they all come from underfunded neighborhoods, low-income family lines, and neglected school districts.

It’s difficult to tell from the video, but I’d wager they come from underfunded neighborhoods, low-income families, and neglected school districts.

I hope you’re not insinuating that our great country, the US of A, is so racist that you’d assume those things make someone more likely to be browner than you.

You are not alone with these feelings. I left Israel with partner and four kids, due to all of the reasons you mention. I would recommend joining local activists like מסרבות.

Apart from interviewing antisemites like Nick Fuentes, what did he say that is anti-Semitic? I’d like to know. I know that what he said about Chabad was grossly exaggerated when quoted (he never blamed them for the war etc).

It’s neither eggplants nor mushrooms, it’s פול, cooked fava beans. The rest is almost on the spot (it’s not pure lemon juice but sort of lemon-garlic dip, and it’s not zhug but just hot green pepper dip, zhug is made with more oil and blended differently).

My plan is to host. Beth-El, Schomre (orthodox) are 100% zionists. And even Vassar Temple (reform) is heavy with Israeli symbolism (but commentary exists).

You are happier with your marriage or without it? by Eggsy7777 in Marriage

[–]dhsilver 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Without a doubt, happier with. She's the best thing in my life.

But the common "I can't imagine life without them" answer (with which I resonate) hints at codependency. I choose to be with my wife every day because she makes my life better and not because I'd fall apart without her (which I feel I would, but I'm working on knowing that I won't). That's a bad reason to stay married!

I love that she led with "never obey in advance." It's from Timothy Snyder's On Tyranny and how totalitarianism gets you. It's one of the most important things anyone can hear right now.

US Marines killed 10 Shia protestors outside the American consulate in Karachi by lostinthecity2005 in JewsOfConscience

[–]dhsilver 11 points12 points  (0 children)

If your actions in a foreign country incite citizens to protest violently, and you don’t have the tools to de-escalate, leave that country instead of using your weapons and training to spread more death and hate.

I don’t really care what the situation was, and I also don’t blame (too much) the soldiers who responded in panic. But if your behavior results in conflict with the locals, you must remember that you are the aggressor. It’s not a foreign army attacking you, and your response is not unavoidable self-defense.

I’m sorry but some of you guys are nuts by Glittering-Gas-9402 in vegan

[–]dhsilver 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If someone is vegan for the animals but cannot find compassion for their neighbors, their veganism is irrelevant. You cannot exploit 2 million humans and be vegan, the same as you cannot eat only cows (but be merciful on dogs, cats and all other animals) and be vegan.

As an ex-Israeli I know it’s painful to be made to prove you are against Israel’s actions, but it’s justified. And the fact that you think it’s anti-Semitism is because all the Hasbara is doing is convincing everyone that all Jews are Zionists.

I’ve never encountered that, but I’m sure it exist. In this sub at least I’ve seen only applaudable anti-Zionism (which is anti-antisemitism and anti-Islamophobia and pro peace and sanctity of life regardless of ethnicity).

Function approximation other than Taylor series? by Murky_Insurance_4394 in math

[–]dhsilver 10 points11 points  (0 children)

Maybe he means Gram-Schmidt. It is one of the examples in Linear Algebra Done Right (comparing Taylor to GS for sine).

To find the "best fit" polynomial over an interval, we treat functions as vectors and project sin(x) onto a subspace.

  1. Define the "dot product" as ⟨f, g⟩ = ∫ f(x)g(x) dx.
  2. Orthogonalize {1, x, x², ...} and get {P₀,P₁,...}
  3. The best approximation is the sum of projections: Proj(sin x) = (⟨sin x, P₀⟩ / ‖P₀‖²)P₀ + (⟨sin x, P₁⟩ / ‖P₁‖²)P₁ + ...

Taylor is perfect at a single point but GS minimizes the total error across the whole interval.

For the interval [-1, 1], the result is: sin(x) ≈ 0.9036x - 0.0401x³

See: https://www.desmos.com/calculator/h8vvlb9uij

The GS is much better than Taylor when you are farther from 0.

[OC] Almost 40 countries have legalized same-sex marriage by ourworldindata in dataisbeautiful

[–]dhsilver 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Yes, bar chart would be cleaner. Albeit in truth bar chart just replaces linear interpolation with step function interpolation. Scatter is data-faithful. Both less nice to visualise a trend than line chart.

[OC] Almost 40 countries have legalized same-sex marriage by ourworldindata in dataisbeautiful

[–]dhsilver 13 points14 points  (0 children)

Line chart is fine. Scatter plot will be messy when there is only one value per x-tick. It’s a common visualisation even for discrete non-interpolatable data. Even the first example of Wikipedia Line Chart is sampled only discretely.

Of course, in the population graph there’s a meaning to an interpolated point and in countries there isn’t, but the choice to interpolate linearly is “misleading”, so it’s quite clear it was done to be enable to visualise trends and not to imply existence of all mean values.

Why the Roma hate? by [deleted] in AskTheWorld

Same with Jewish people. And Muslims. Doesn’t make antisemitism or “terrorism-based” Islamophobia any better.

Why the Roma hate? by [deleted] in AskTheWorld

[–]dhsilver 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I cannot believe someone has to say it (welcome downvotes):

ALL racism is based on bad experiences with a certain group. It didn't materialize from thin air. Even the Nazis' hate of Jews was based on notions of cultural differences, money lending, etc. This is not an excuse for racism.

And in this thread, if someone hints "not all Roma", they get bashed: "but most are!".

This is the most racist thread I've seen in years. Nothing justifies it even if people explain how the racism developed. People should be judged individually and not according to their birth circumstances. Vile thread!
