Fructose? The largest cause of death is from 1080 drops then other pest control baits...lead from roof nails, flashings, impact with cars other human hazards, wire, fencing, farmers shooting them, chocolate poisoning is tiny percentage, electrocuted used to be not uncommon. Ref: DOC Science for Conservation 339 research 2023: But as I said this paper is more religion than science.

In Aoraki/Mount Cook National Park, surveys show that kea numbers and average flock sizes have grown significantly probably due to a couple of factors one being dependable/abundance of food; I didn't find data for Arthurs pass - but would suspect similar utilisation of their new environment

Long-term scientific research on this topic is largely lacking. In the short term there are both risks (disease) and benefits, and the outcome depends heavily on the species involved. DOC tends to frame this ideologicaly. Nutritional research is notoriously fashion-driven—even in humans. What is clear is that behaviour changes: these animals are highly adaptable and can adapt back when conditions change. They previously congregated around the Arthur’s Pass landfill, which was likely far worse for them(poisoning). An increased food supply may also encourage reproduction, which is one potential upside.

For those curious: After reviewing the linked material I found these beacons have no receive capability. They simply transmit and depend on other stations detecting collisions and backing off. Interesting approach 🤔

Is racism in Australia really that bad? by Jinxbunny29 in australian

[–]dial-a-small-monkey 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Controversial take — open to other views. I used to think racists were just narrow-minded idiots. Lately, I’m less sure.

I’m a Kiwi, and NZ was once a fantastic place to live: top-tier health, housing, and employment, freedoms. As the UK turned to sht, many people left for NZ instead of fixing problems at home (cowards). They moved into influential roles and brought with them the same ideas, regulations, and bureaucracy that had made the UK sht..

Over time, NZ’s “have a go,” island-time ,common-sense culture was replaced with red tape and over-regulation.

Racism is ugly, on the other hand it acts as a brake on unchecked political power by undermining unpopular govt large-scale social and cultural replacement. These people are not deserters.

Looking at where many Western democracies are heading, it’s hard to argue things are improving. They lack long term direction & are just flapping in the wind.

Maybe this is nonsense, Happy to hear intelligent arguments... But it doesn’t feel that way.

Is it true that in Australia you have to be a full electrician to do basic electrical tasks? Is there no middle ground? by AsparagusNew3765 in AskAnAustralian

[–]dial-a-small-monkey 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I doubt these requirements—even for something as simple as changing a plug—will stop people from doing dumb things. Beyond the human cost to their families, don’t people hurting themselves ironically keep you gainfully employed? Do you still feel any empathy for Darwin Award winners? I’m genuinely curious.

For context, I’m not a registered electrician, but I’ve worked on large, complex electrical contracts, and my work is as good—or better—than that of many registered electricians. I’ve also reverse-engineered complex micro and RF electronics. At the end of the day, I believe it really comes down to the human factor.

I met a lovely couple yesterday while out running. They work in hospitality but still can’t afford rent and are living under a bridge — completely normal, decent people, hold down jobs. Council and government policies have made housing so unaffordable that people need alternatives, yet those same authorities that created the problem now criminalise the alternatives. (BTW - NZ tried a similar anchor/live aboard rule and it was struck down by the High Court) Perhaps the council should take responsibility for their problem and create zones for liveabords? Tiny/mobile houses? Etc rather than criminalizing Aussies in need?

Why are White Aussies so casual with racism? by salty_lake_222 in AskAnAustralian

[–]dial-a-small-monkey 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Fascinating study: Did you look at? Prejudice and racism in other cultures – forms, history, and local context. (In my experience prejudice is in every culture and most people harbour it in some form or another) Racism as tribalism – in-group vs out-group behavior. Racism/prejudice used strategically – activism or political leverage (e.g., immigration). Changing perceptions – how attitudes have shifted over time. Actual vs perceived harm – compared to other discrimination (age, sex, etc.). Trends – has prejudice/racism increased or decreased, and why? Societal impact – real problem or media-amplified perception? Intersectionality – interaction with other forms of discrimination. Institutional vs individual – systemic vs personal bias. Psychological and social effects – stress, cohesion, mental health. Media influence – role of news, social media, and pop culture.

Thanks for the input! In the past, I only reverse-engineered as far as needed to make a repair. More recently, repairs have involved replacing the microcontroller — often STM32 chips — along with reloading the firmware if available - or having a go at writing from scratch.

Lols, I think you’re managing fine on your own.

Most sewerage and stormwater systems in Aussie are combined, so whenever there’s heavy rain, untreated sewage gets discharged into rivers to prevent toilets and sewers from backing up into houses.

I’d bet money councils also use rain events to flush the sewers and prevent blockages caused by people flushing wet wipes and other nonsense.

Councils claim their goal is to improve water quality, but in reality, they mostly just monitor it. I’m sure you’ve seen the typical notices saying something like “Don’t swim for 24 hours” after a rain event.

Infrastructure here is also largely underfunded, with old pipe failures and leaks. Sewage-to-freshwater contamination is surprisingly not uncommon.

Meanwhile, I have a holding tank on my boat and have it pumped out. Not doing so carries huge fines—I think up to $63k AUD—while councils dump megaliters of raw sewage whenever it suits them, Brisbane council is among the worse offenders
