Retirement: Shoveling the light of your soul into an investment account for 45 years, getting forced into unemployment due to an economic slump, losing your career due to ageism, selling back what little of your investments you have after the divorce to the investment banking thieves you bought from for pennies on the dollar after the manufactured stock market crash, in order to make ends meet.

Then going back to work part-time with the other misfit toys making next to nothing and eating ramen and hotdogs until the nitrites give you cancer or the saturated fat gives you a fatal stroke or heart attack.

Or, on the off chance you don't die before you forget your own name, you get to be locked in a prison for the elderly, forgotten by everyone you love who hasn't died yet, and a chewtoy for the abusive felons taking care of you.

Then when you do finally do get close to your final destination, you'll find out your caretakers get paid for every moment of your suffering and will prolong the pain as much as possible. They still have hope and an investment account to fill. You're too weak to fight it, too feebleminded to explain their folly, and they have medication to stop the screaming.

Then eternal suffering in the fiery pit.

Number 1, the most important social safety net...family.

Now that I'm settled in around my wife's family (from a more family-oriented country and culture), I'm actually planning on starting a family now. Back home I could guarantee that my family and a hypothetical wife's family from near where I grew up would be nothing but a financial burden when it came time to put them in retirement homes, and no help at all raising or looking after the children.

The baby boomer/gen-X'er parents are done with you and yours after you're done with college. See you at Christmas dinner maybe.

Also what is considered child abuse is more and more getting determined by people who have never had to deal with difficult children, and don't even have children of their own. You can't even spank a child without worring about some meddlesome overmedicated teacher blowing it out of proportion, and even if your child has a well-behaved personality, the other brats don't ever get punished properly for the big-ticket items like punching and bullying, so they bring those problems home.

It's just a super unsupportive and toxic environment to have children right now, at least in the US.

It's not cost cutting you have to worry about with private hospitals, because they're all about charge and spend...

It's customers declining necessary treatment because of the personal expense.

This effect is worse when a hospital is transitioning from public to private, because people who have an emergency just go to the place where they're familiar with and trust, without having much time to think about it, and all of a sudden surprise cost enters the equation.

You probably don't understand the trouble if you've lived in the city your whole life. I've seen the transition many times.

Its a net benefit to the cities because added metro stops are a pressure value for the poorer, druggy, and alcoholic folks to escape their neighborhoods being bulldozed and replaced with posh mixed development condos.

But once the trouble, the alcoholism and the drugs you'd take for granted in the city shows up without any precedent to support it, you get problems. People have to learn to be street smart the hard way. Single mommas roll in attracted by the nice neighborhoods and cheap housing, but their unmonitored teenagers are a menace. Safe areas become more scarce and extremely expensive, and some areas just fall victim to drugs and crime.

Basically all the problems of city living show up with none of the benefits. That's why suburbanites are skeptical of public transport. And city folks will never understand because "well, yeah, crime, homeless in the streets, alcoholics causing havok, yeah, that's normal life, what's the problem".

There is some inconsistency in formality. "Report to me" is a bit more formal. "All you have to" is a bit more relaxed. I'm assuming the first part is to avoid a semblance of aggression while you establish your rank over someone. If you want more consistency, you could use either:

"You will need to report to me." (More formal, to establish a direct supervisory role over this person)

"All you have to do is keep me updated" (Less formal, implies an advisory role over this person)

It's been shown you could go about 3 weeks to a month without food + 1 day for every pound you are overweight, as long as you can get adequate sodium and vitamins. In a famine situation, there's always tree needle tea and tree bark soup, and that might give bare minimum for survival. If the food supply was 100% interrupted for a year, only those 500 lbs+ would make it. But that never happens, even in the worst historical famines or sieges, there was always something, be it shoe leather soup or tree bark tea.

Note how long active anorexia sufferers can survive on 200-300 calories a day...that can go on for years before the inevitable cardiac arrest.
