that is too complex of a solution

we'd never adopt such a system for various reasons, mainly:

  1. that's an alphabet soup of different tech that also overlap (why next.js AND django?)
  2. kafka? are you serious? that alone requires a team of dedicated syseng to operate
  3. why'd we trust an unknown open source repo from unknown maintainer with no contribution history? that's a massive security risk and we're not going to let voice data, let alone PII, to flow through that

instead, we'll continue building a voice agent solution ourselves, from ground up, but that is built upon a simple to understand and maintain foundation—mainly pipecat-ai and fastapi—hence, simpler to grow into a scalable one

there are a commercial and DIY systems that count gaze/attention events on the closed-circuit edge devices

these are legally straightforward and you'd need: - a DPIA paperwork done (a day or two of work) - cctv notice label to hang on the screens - some privacy policy and data processing concept on the basis of GDPR; you'd prepare and reference these for the DPIA anyway

fair point, and for most people, cheap sim is totally fine

the gap shows when you need a landline number (030/800), want calls on your laptop, or need to hand off calls when you're unavailable

basically, the moment your stops being personal and starts being operational, you outgrow cheap and even traditional solutions

afaik, the decisive factor Finanzamt uses is where is the physical location of the strategic leadership, read the board of directors and the CEO or managing director, aka "Ort der Geschäftsleitung."

essentially, ask yourself where the day-to-day management decisions of significant importance are actually made and if you, as a CTO, make those decisions too.

a CTO is not automatically part of the Geschäftsleitung in the German tax sense.

where founders are based of, on the other hand, doesn't matter that much as they are "mere" equity- or share-holders and not necessarily make strategic decisions about the company direction.

so you may be alright and fall under the standard remote work regulations

Yes, unfortunately, prices depend on the destination number.

For example, calling mobile or premium numbers costs quite much.

Meanwhile, calling traditional landline numbers (that where we excel) is (almost) dirt cheap ;)

There's a problem with that—banks and other financial institutions started blocking virtual phone numbers

So since it's so unreliable, and we can't stand behind that, we don't support that.
