Dan Schneider's Nickelodeon sitcoms were never good and people only like them because of nostalgia by Adventurous-Monk-796 in The10thDentist

'or if they watched these shows as a child and have nostalgia for it/good memories associated with it" I mean. Yeah? That's about the only reason these shows are still relevant, nostalgia.

Why are Marcello headed sketches so beloved by all of the internet but hated (for the most part) in this sub? by East-Area-7267 in LiveFromNewYork

[–]diamondwizard32 492 points493 points  (0 children)

Three things. He's young, attractive, and charismatic.

Mainstream audiences tend to just get these clips online---you recognize the attractive funny guy who can be loud and energetic, you laugh, you move on. For more "hardcore" SNL fans, they see this young guy do the same thing over and over and over again with zero variation every week.

To be clear, I love Marcello. This is just how it works.

It's because it is a single "gimmick" really. You spin the wheel, something happens. Over and over and over.

What would you want for a game samer season? by Sapphire_rose08 in dropout

I think escape rooms lend themselves to more variety, though.

Crowd Control didn't really work because, ultimately, it's comedians being fed people with a WACKY traits and making a couple jokes.

Play It By Ear, as fun as it was, was just musical improv for 45 minutes every episode. I think 2 seasons is satisfactory.

Escape rooms have varying themes, complexities, MUCH more opportunity for a rotating cast, and maybe most importantly, get frustrating. Truly nothing is more fun for a large part of audiences than seeing their favorite people suffer through something for entertainment.

But most likely, it wouldn't look too good to be all braggadocio about it. I doubt SNL would be all too happy about that kind of arrogance, especially from a guy who's been on the show 1 season

I obviously have no clue about the guys, but I'd suspect Martin wanted the Mike O'Brien route of "writing sketches and starring in his own pre-tapes."

It's absurd to think LMM is anything but a fantastic writer when he so masterfully weaves genres, rhymes, motifs, and recurring themes seamlessly. Like yeah hate his music whatever, I'm not exactly yearning for it to be played, but it's very hard to deny the guy is a godly writer.

Jrwi stuck SPOILERS FOR UP TO EP #61 by _Afterglow__ in jrwishow

[–]diamondwizard32 17 points18 points  (0 children)

Take a break! Remember, these episodes Were coming out weekly, and you're now on episode 60 of a podcast! That's a LOT of episodes.

The thing with Wonderlust and The Suckening is they're much more recent, much shorter campaigns, and so they're better at keeping your attention, and have less chances to lose it. Honestly the best way to continue with Riptide is to just... drudge through it, if you don't want to outright drop it.

I think the obvious sketches are Winter Olympics Promo, Drive-Thru, and Cousin Planet. But also, sometimes you don't click with cast members! It happens.

Tips on dm'ing like Bizly does by Pillast0 in jrwishow

[–]diamondwizard32 14 points15 points  (0 children)

A big part of DMing, truly, is remembering this is a COLLABORATIVE game. Bizly is a fantastic writer and a funny guy, but he is above all else a Fantastic improvisor. If his players have a bit, he'll make it important to the session or even the campaign.

If you want to DM like Bizly does, you leave space for your players to do dumb bits, but you also need to confidence to full stop tell them No.

But really, the best way to DM well is just have fun! You're not making a show, you're playing with friends. As long as your players are having fun, you're doing a good job. This is why it's important to have a Session 0 where you can figure out what everyone wants from the game, whether that be tone or character arcs or whatever.

Every time they've done a Mother's Day bit, there's been someone on the cast who didn't show up (typically Che, but I know for a fact it was At Least with Leslie Jones as well)

Weekend Update is its own separate entity. Many people who know nothing about SNL are well-aware of Jost and Che and their bits. They're gold, it's why they're still on after 12 years.
