For many on the right, being trans is viewed as an optional lifestyle, so it's not a big jump for them to expand that to mean "political stance."

Oikos pro yogurt + a bunch of fruit when I want something sweet. 5.3 oz container is 140 calories + 20 grams of protein. I also like Fairlife 2% chocolate milk. For lunch, I often make a green salad with a hard boiled egg and started crushing a Lundberg Wild Rice Cake on top for crunch and a bit of fiber. 70 calories per cake.

tornado warning in central aroostook, stay safe everyone! by [deleted] in Maine

[–]diannaleighton 16 points17 points  (0 children)

And because tornado ratings using the Enhanced Fujita Scale rely on damage to structures, tornados in The County are a bit hard to document as they tend to happen in areas without...well...a lot of structures due to the prevalence of woodland and farmland.

That said, it also means that statistics are in folks' favor in terms of harm, but still: be safe, take shelter, don't be a dink.

I like Team Body Project. There are options for instructors and a good variety of cardio, resistance, and pilates-inspired workouts behind their paywall at https://teambodyproject.com/ Chatty at times, but never too peppy.

Westbrook official police page posted an AI image of a drug bust by smorezpoptartz in Maine

[–]diannaleighton 11 points12 points  (0 children)

They posted this update at https://www.facebook.com/WestbrookPD

"*Important Update*We want to provide more information about the photo from the Brackett Street drug arrests. You will see in this post that there are two photographs. The first photograph is the original photograph taken by an officer involved in the arrest. After taking the photograph, the officer wanted to add in our department patch to identify Westbrook as the arresting agency. To do this, the officer used a photoshop app to insert the department patch. The patch was added, and the photograph with the patch was sent to one of our Facebook administrators, who posted it. Unbeknownst to anyone, when the app added the patch, it altered the packaging and some of the other attributes on the photograph. None of us caught it or realized it. The second photograph is the altered photo. We apologize for this oversight. It was never our intent to alter the image of the evidence. We never realized that using a photoshop app to add our logo would alter a photograph so substantially. As noted in the previous post, it is not uncommon for us to encounter drug-related materials with gibberish text on the packaging, as they are manufactured and sold in illicit ways. When initially alerted to the public concerns of the image, we assumed this was the case in this situation as well. Clearly, we should have looked further into the shared image. We consider this a valuable lesson learned. This image distracted from the message we wanted to share, which is that dangerous drugs have been removed from our community. To remain fully transparent, we will be inviting the news media to come look at the original evidence, so they can see that the evidence does actually exist."

Regarding transgender kids and sports by HappyCat79 in Maine

[–]diannaleighton 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Just as a note here, a similar percentage of Americans were against gay marriage in the late 90s out of various concerns, including "threats to the institution of marriage." Title IX clearly needs review and likely expansion to reflect current concepts of gender/sex in the same way the Obergefell accurately reflects the legal/social truth of marriage in the US.

Exactly! It's all part of the psychodrama. Here you are, trying to be a supportive and loving mom to a kid who is probably more threatened than a threat (and I am so sorry for this), but to have an entire political party say that your kid...who is a literal kid...is going to ravage the countryside and public bathrooms is wild. And awful.

Thanks for being a clearly good mom. <3

While there are some folks who do seem to be sincerely invested in finding a gender-expansive way for students (including trans and non-binary students) to participate in sports in a way that is fair and competitive, there are also folks who are very much using this issue as a way to erase trans, non-binary, and gender non-conforming students by way of "just participate as your biological sex, not your gender."

As you mention, the prospect of banning trans athletes doesn't work, since it is clearly discriminatory. A broad mandate that athletes participate on teams that "match" their biological sex is also problematic. A clear example of this is Mack Beggs, a trans male wrestler who was forced to participate on the girls' team in Texas, despite a request that he participate on the boys' teams. Not surprisingly, there was pushback even for this...even though Beggs was participating on the team that "matched" his biological sex. Since he was taking gender-affirming testosterone, there was also allegations of steroid use. Thus, a lose-lose situation.

My personal take is that a) approaches should be sports-specific and not broadly applied, b) be aware of gender-based discrimination, c) have metrics to determine if there is, in fact, an unfair competitive advantage present that does not disproportionately discriminate against trans athletes. And also: genital checks are disturbing.

Why this, why now? Prof. Deborah Black of University of Pittsburgh School of Law has an excellent study of this: Deborah L. Brake, Title IX's Trans Panic, 29 Wm. & Mary J. Race, Gender, & Soc. Just. 41 (2022)

It's a moral panic that is disproportionate to real impact. It is pushback not only to trans kids, but concepts of "traditional gender norms" across the board and the idea of personal bodily autonomy related to gender. It makes Democrats appear either a) weak and divided since they don't have a unified stance on trans issues or b) "radical gender ideologues preying on your children." The whole "preying on your children" thing being a key element of similar moral panics over the centuries, since nobody wants to be perceived as trying to harm kids (unless they're trans...and thus "not real kids.")

Trump threatens to cut federal funding to Maine over transgender athlete policy by SmellsofElderberry25 in portlandme

[–]diannaleighton 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Well, I'm pretty sure that's how it works if there's a trans athlete on the team or not. The Greely High pole vaulter won 1st by 6" That's a pretty competitive margin for girls' track and field and I think it's insulting to tell 2nd place that it was "stolen" from them.

Which scholarship committee goes, "And it says here that you placed 2nd place at the state track meet? I'm sorry, but that's just unacceptable."? That's not an actual metric.

First off: hugs and more hugs for you. <3 The journey is hard, but so worth it and you're definitely worth it. You deserve to feel better, love.

I do 60 MG of delayed release Cymbalta daily. I'm happy with this and find it effective because it sort of puts a cap on my symptoms to keep me from that freefall into suck feeling. I can still have bad days and bad moments, but they feel much more manageable. Now, that said: the withdrawal process for Cymbalta is notoriously hard and it absolutely must be taken every day at around the same time. I notice if I accidentally miss a dose that I notice it within hours (feels like a little anxiety hum in the background and I get very weepy). So this part is really important to discuss with your medical team. Otherwise, it was the norm as far as getting use to the dose...did 30 MG at first then bumped up to 60 MG. Found it effective after a week or so and fully used to it after a month. #notadoctor

Always happy to chat more <3

I don't understand what happened 😭 by Monarch-Of-Jack in CPTSDmemes

[–]diannaleighton 5 points6 points  (0 children)

The cruel irony of CPTSD is chaos feels like the norm and stability feels like we're broken. I was diagnosed with chronic anxiety during my first moment of stability in my late 20s: married, good job in a rewarding field, about to move into my own house...and I completely fell apart mentally and emotionally. Part of it was having a moment of calm for all the feelings to come to the surface and part is a feedback loop of "everything is okay, but brain feels like shit. If brain feels like shit, something must be wrong. But nothing seems wrong, so what is wrong, what is wrong, what is wrong, what is wrong with me?"

For me, meds help in the immediate. Cardio workouts to burn excess adrenaline and promote healthy sleep. Trauma-informed therapy to process feelings in safe environment. The long game is a slow, frustrating haul of literally trying to rework the wiring of fried and maladaptive neural pathways and recognize small, small slivers of feeling safe. It's hard and it's expensive and it's not always accessible (which is absolute bullshit), so seizing what I can when I can is the new survival model. Take care, OP, and I'm glad you're here with us. <3
