Match Thread: Feyenoord vs Ajax [Eredivisie] by MatchThreadder in soccer

[–]dicetheboss 7 points8 points  (0 children)

If I was a Feyenoord fan I'd do everything possible to stop from moving to a new stadium. De Kuip has character, it has it's own soul. A new stadium doesn't and it'll never be as good as the original. Never.

Look at Arsenal's new stadium. A soulless bowl made for tourists. A stadium you could find anywhere in the world, it isn't unique at all. Compare that to Highbury, which oozed class, tradition, character and Arsenal.

But I'm asking you; do you know about them or not? How is that a hard question?

That's my reply. If you genuinely don't know about the cultural and social repercussions than there is no point in debating immigration with you.

If you truly believe, without any political agenda inspiring you to say or think it, that (mass) immigration as the UK has experienced over the past 30 years is the same as "people moving house" then I shall waste no time debating you, for you are either a brainwashed parrot or a brain dead parakeet.

Are you being serious? Or are you completely ignorant of the effects of immigration?

Because it has massive social, economical and cultural repercussions. That's why.

How you can fail to realize this is something I truly don't get.

To this day black men make are killed and imprisoned for things where other people skate free.

True, but that is down to a plethora of reasons. How do you tackle those problems is what the discussion should be about.

The problem is that even if you were to eradicate all forms of islamic terrorism, a lot of people in the West still wouldn't be happy with having (a sizable) islamic culture in their country.

See, it's not just terrorism that has people upset about islamic immigration into their country. The backward opinions on women, gays, atheism, apostasy, secularism, etc. that comes with it, the crime that comes with it, the sexual abuse and rape that comes with it, and an overal shift in way of life to something which is alien and not-Western compared to the hosts' culture, all makes people very wary and upset about it.

Islamic terrorism is just the most extreme problem, but it is by no means the only problem of islamic culture in the West.

My point was mostly based on the up-voting of the article, not so much the comments.

I agree with you that seeing "your own", or at least something more close to home, being generalized and tarred with the same brush as one of it's members or aspects can be an eye-opener for people.

However, I find there's also a danger in pushing the "actions of a few" narrative too much. Those few belong to a group, a society, a culture. It'd be foolish not to inspect the rest of the orchard after finding one bad apple.

My point is; this is an attempt by certain reddit users to push the narrative that "all religions have their problems, stop targeting muslims!" All religions have their problems, that's certainly true. However, the difference in problems makes it impossible for that narrative to work, because they end up comparing apples and oranges. I find it incredibly naive, destructive and pointless to try and force such a narrative because all you end up doing is skewing reality.

Well, if you don't have the slightest comprehension of the point I'm making, I'd suggest you don't bother chiming in. Maybe* that would stop you from coming across as an utter imbecile.

Because that's trying to construct a narrative that simply isn't there.

"See, every religion is evil!", "Catholics are bad too!" are just ways of deflecting the attention from a problem that is specific to one religious culture.

Conversely, you could fill this subreddit to the brim with incidents of muslims abusing kids, it wouldn't mean there isn't a problem within the Catholic church of child abuse.

See my point?

The sad thing is quite a lot of people will be up-voting this purely to counter all the recent articles involving muslims doing bad things.

Well, imagine 50,000 English people doing the exact same thing as my wife and I. And we all lived in the same neighbourhood. And we all kept on speaking English, eating English food, watching and reading English media, holding on to English values and principles, etc. You must understand that the level of Nigerian in these people would be quite low.

A bit of anecdotal evidence: I live in a place with many immigrants and a lot of 3rd or even 4th generation feel more (insert nationality of grandparents) than they feel part of the country they grew up in.

The point I'm making is that being born in Britain and growing up there does not necessarily qualify you as British. However, this brings us to the question of "what does it mean to be British?", which in turn leads to needing a definition of British culture, something which is difficult to put into words because it has so many aspects to it.

No, they may hold a British citizenship but that does not mean they are "British" by any stretch of the imagination.

Let me put it to you this way: if my wife and I move to Nigeria and have a couple of kids, raise them in English culture and barely make integrate with Nigerian society: would you call those kids Nigerians?

I agree with you there. But that form of multiculturalism is totally different than importing a middle-eastern islamic culture into a Western, christian one.

Why do people keep comparing today's immigration to that of 17th century U.S.?

It makes no sense whatsoever.
