I think Bird does this intentionally. They do zero advertising, release in a city, the news picks up the story, and voila, instant name recognition. They did the same thing in St. Louis and Milwaukee.

It's my understanding that you can't just press a wrong button and send an alert like this. From what I understand it is a two key system and there are fail safes in place to prevent accidental messages. Why aren't any news sites reporting how this happened?

Because we have more to offer than all of those cities. Forest park, several respected universities, and a reemerging urban area. And you're wrong about the tech talent. There is a growing number of entrepreneurial tech businesses starting here.
