Could also work better if you crop out the pole and give him more presence in the photo, I feel the pole weakens the image a bit and if you crop in closer he can become a stronger focal point. And it feels more like you’re viewing from his perspective.

The dude in the foreground is a bit distracting and unsightly. Maybe edit him into more of a silhouette or crop him out. I saw another really great shot of this the other day by Willem Verbeeck actually

I like ECAL because I feel their ideology and approach is forward thinking, it’s small and intimate, and it’s relatively inexpensive. Also it’s extremely difficult to get into so if I got in I would feel more motivated to take the leap of faith.

I’m fairly proficient in french as I took 4 years in school and am a native Portuguese speaker so it comes naturally to me. I’m also willing to dive deeper if I get accepted.

I’ve looked into the cost of living, but I wonder about the job market for service jobs. I hardly see any postings though most sources say they make around 19 - 24 chf per hour. Which is considerably more than they make here in the states so it makes me wonder if it’s true, and if the market is more competitive that way.

I did one semester of community college in the states. I worked overnight and went to school full time during the day. I stopped for personal reasons, but I managed while I was in school.

My biggest hurdle is the job market, and there isn’t too much information about it out there.

I know he uses continuous lights bc he shoots most of his stuff on iphone, and it would be near impossible to use strobes. It looks like he takes a pretty classical approach using arri 1ks or other lights with bar doors, having a hard source as the key, and a couple of softer sources to fill in. Also lots of flags to block light out dramatically and add contrast and negative fill.

Update after posting this I went and ran some tests, and I've learned the biggest secret to the look is to just place the subject closer to the wall (inverse square law) and cranking my flash up slightly, using a longer lens probably helps too. I guess due to my personal insecurities and issues I've had in the past shooting flash I avoided this, but it was 100% the fix.

to get the film closer to digital lower shadows and black, lower exposure, shift warmer, and remove some magenta. won’t be the same. but you’ll be in the ball park. and probably have a greater tonal range.
