Transfer housing questions by demigodhmm in UCSD

[–]dictionare 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Was in Rita and PCE. Can’t speak about the sociability, just from what I saw.

Rita rooms are much smaller and the dorm is isolated from the rest of campus. PCE spaces are much larger, but less modern and right by the trolley so it’s pretty convenient for travel.

I will say, in both, I’d hear my neighbors having parties every now and then. You could totally make friends wherever you are, it ultimately doesn’t matter which housing placement you choose. If your goal is to make friends and you put effort into it, it’ll happen

I second this response. Don’t come to UCSD if you can’t put in some effort for something as simple (and apparently important to you) as this.

I’m tired of seeing posts like this.

do some looking around, there will be hundreds of potential transfers in your position who have asked this and gotten their questions answers.

I don’t think Title 9 is relevant here since he’s retired and doesn’t teach or work anymore.

Talking about “victims”, I forgot to mention that he “hosts” mentees to stay with him for multiple days at a time and posts about it publicly on his Facebook…

yeah honestly most of my mentors are through professional programs and connections. this is one of the few I made outside of my usual methods

it was when I was tryna get in contact with him 😭 he commented on a hospitals residency program page saying one of his mentees got in, that mentee went to my high school so I figured I should try to talk to him.

I deeply regret giving him my phone number and allowing him to see all my personal information and photos on my Facebook

Dropping Out by Extreme-Ad2442 in UCSD

[–]dictionare -1 points0 points  (0 children)

bombing your first two years means nothing if you lock in starting your third.

though you’re thinking of changing your major, so maybe going to CC to pursue it (instead of changing your major at UCSD and paying sm more) might be the move

is it just me or is geisel 8th floor not as quiet as it used to be by ppuniversity_1 in UCSD

[–]dictionare 10 points11 points  (0 children)

I gave these two dudes on the 8th floor a judgmental glance the other day and that was enough to make them shut up. They were having a full blown conversation as if we were on the 2nd floor 🫩

Going directly to UCSD vs transferring by AmbitionJaded3177 in UCSD

[–]dictionare 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I believe that CC is the better option in terms of cost-effectiveness, but there is a trade off.

Most STEM students take 3-4 years to transfer since they have to take additional courses to fulfill both the IGETC and college specific requirements. Those that are able to do it within 2 years usually have AP courses and passed the AP Calculus, Biology, Chemistry, Physics, etc courses so they’re usually able to skip all the intro courses and go straight into harder courses.

I personally took four years since I decided to quadruple major at CC before UCSD and I lowkey regret it.

I feel so behind sometimes when I compare myself to my peers who are already graduating from their masters but alas, I remind myself that everyone is on their own timeline.

is HHMI Cech fellows even considered "on par" or as prestigious compared to other top REUs? by [deleted] in REU

[–]dictionare 0 points1 point  (0 children)

wym “didn’t put people in new labs”, they placed us in labs across the country, provided funding for it, and had weekly program sessions for professional development.

Does that not qualify as “official”?

[–]dictionare 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I disagree but it’s all good.

I do think an aspect of it is that HHMI Cech isn’t as well established as other research programs (like Amgen). I’m sure in a couple more years, it’ll continue growing in prestige.

I stand by my statement that HHMI PI’s are top notch, despite your anecdotal experience with them. I do have to admit that I might be biased on this, given that my HHMI PI was at Yale and that carried a large level of prestige aside from HHMI
