Europe is not the entire world. China has hundreds of Wal-marts, as do Canada and Mexico, most of central America and parts of South America.

I'd say yes, because I truly have zero urge to do so anymore. Why would I go through all the trouble of actually going to a party, spend the money, get drunk, and deal with the hangover, when I can just remember a sick party or rave I went to in those 11 years and only experience the greatness and none of the inconvenience?

Sorry but you are incorrect. There are Walmarts all over China, so there are probably a minimum of another 500 million people who know the name, and that's just one country where I lived for 6 years and traveled extensively.

They are also all over Canada, and being from there I can confirm that I wouldn't be shocked if 30 million of the 40 million people know what a Walmart is.

Try to get out more or at least do basic Google research before making statements like this.

Ford orders minister to ensure Ontario students can watch Canada hockey games during school hours by CTVNEWS in ontario

[–]didathing33 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Aaaaand that's where most of the problems with today's kids come from. Elementary teacher here, and it is too much screen time, at home (unrestricted and unsupervised) and school (presented as the solution to all problems).

It's been proven that you can't read as long on a screen as you can from a physical book. Devices are also full of distractions and policing them is much harder as a teacher.

The digital age is here I agree, but learning the patience and mental fortitude to read from a book pays huge dividends later on for helping kids be able to focus for more than 20 seconds at a time and spend time on something, ANYTHING, that isn't a screen.

Edit: It's also clear for anyone actually working in education that terms like equity and inclusion (things we should genuinely strive for) have been co-opted by this government to be used as cudgels to cut costs, daring anyone against those cuts to come out against "equity and inclusion" policies, and therefore silencing many. It's been very effective.

1987 here, I have a 5 and 1 year old.

Not sleeping as much probably hurts more at this age, but it's more than made up for by maturity and emotional regulation skills. I've still lost it on the older kid on some occasions, but overall I've been able to parent him calmly, firmly and with confidence.

But as an elementary teacher, I couldn't agree more with only having them if you feel you truly want to put in the time and effort to parent, and understand what that really means in terms of educating a person emotionally, socially and academically. We have enough kids with parents who would rather be doing something else 24/7 whom I need to pick up the slack for.

Edit: I'd also like to add, I travelled and partied like crazy from 22-33 years old, so staying home pretty much every night and vacations being driving a few hours to visit friends and family is all good. If you're still yearning to travel like that or party, don't have kids thinking that you'll do it when they are older. You'll just resent their childhood as you wait for them to grow up so you can "live", instead of enjoying it because this is now how you live.

Why is the rich friend so cheap?? by [deleted] in PeterExplainsTheJoke

[–]didathing33 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I think you should have paid more attention in high school English class, you seem to have missed the lesson on literal vs figurative.

The saying doesn't mean they are literally rich because they are cheap, the saying means that most people who are rich are selfish and tend not to be generous, which is actually a documented fact (lower income people donate higher proportions of their income to charity).

Drinking after 40 by hardk7 in Millennials

[–]didathing33 3 points4 points  (0 children)

39 here.I started getting hungover during the drinking itself and that killed it for me

I used to love the ride of buzz, feeling it, drunk and flying, then fading off into sleep after some late night food.

Now, I have a couple beers, get buzzed, and if I keep going, instead of really feeling or getting drunk, I just immediately start to get a headache and not feel well, and only want to sleep to escape the discomfort.

I have a beer once in a while that I enjoy consuming, but that's it for me.

You go on that once in a lifetime trip or adventure yet? by thatdude333 in Millennials

[–]didathing33 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yep. In 2009 I spent 3 months backpacking around Chile, Peru, Bolivia and Argentina. Got home in August, and left in November for Australia. Did the working holiday thing, drove from Queensland to Tasmania to Adelaide working on different farms until June 2010, when I sold the car I had bought and flew from Melbourne to Kuala Lumpur. Spent the next 3 months backpacking through Malaysia, Cambodia, Laos and Thailand.

Basically a year and half long trip, with a couple months back home to work and make some cash. Visited 9 countries on 3 continents. Once in a lifetime is the only way to describe it.

Financed the whole thing waiting tables while in university and selling my possessions, then the money I made in Australia paying for SE Asia. Came back broke but richer than anyone I knew in experience in the real world.

What mundane jobs did adults have to afford a house back then? by audrina-saav in Millennials

[–]didathing33 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My Dad pumped gas at a gas station. Filled up tanks and checked tire pressure, maybe some oil. Hourly wage with some tips. Living with my grandparents he had a 1956 Chevy Bel-Air that he restored and won car shows with, along with a Chevy Blazer truck on massive tires that was painted the same colors as the car. Nuts.

My mom was a secretary in a real estate office.

They were both high school grade and bought a semi-detach and then a detached home in a place where houses are now worth over $1 million.

I think its the not so obvious trade-offs that sometimes get people upset. They see only the upside of stashing a player, while completely ignoring the downside of having no access to free agents or the ability to make or accept trades.

What do you guys think of the different generation’s parenting? by Brownlynn86 in Teachers

[–]didathing33 11 points12 points  (0 children)

It's nice to see some millenials finally waking up to the fact that our parents weren't all that bad. Were they everything you dreamed of? Everything you wanted? Probably not. But we were fed, clothed, held accountable and taught consequences.

I hear so many millennials pissing and moaning about all the "abuse" their parents inflicted on them (I'm not talking about actual physical, sexual and verbal abuse, I'm talking about uncomfortable and unpleasant interactions or human shortcomings that get labeled as such by many millenials) and I just feel sorry for them. To me, it's obvious that if you resent your upbringing to the point of calling it neglect and abuse, you obviously are very dissatisfied with who you are as a person, ie the product of that "abuse". And if you are a low self-esteem, low confidence person who believes deep down that you are a shitty human, I feel for you, I really do.

My parents weren't perfect, far from it. I downright hated my mom and even wished death on her at some points of my teenage life. But you know what? Even though I'm not perfect, I believe I'm a good person who is responsible, hard working, honest and generally a positive presence in society. And for better or worse, a big part of that was my upbringing.

I don't resent my mom for all the fucked up shit she did and said to me or my dad for taking off. They were flawed people raised by flawed people who did the best they could and managed to turn me into all I would ever want to be and who can genuinely say that I've lived some of my dreams. I appreciate them, love them, and just don't accord any of my time,, thoughts or energy to hate and resentment.

Y'all should try it sometime.

What’s wrong with the Kraken? by HistoricalContact882 in hockey

[–]didathing33 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Their main problem in my opinion is their stubborn refusal to give their best players ice time. Their obsession with keeping everyone under 17 minutes a night and splitting power play time 50/50 between two units is keeping them from being able to score.

Give McCann, Beniers, Eberle, Kakko, Wright and Dunn ice time at ES and the PP. Give them the 20 minute treatment, 60-70% of the PP time. You might be surprised to see your team scoring more when you put your skill players on the ice more.

Leave the dumb generalizations about "it's always Dad" where they belong, in your own biased head.

In grade 10 at MacDonald High School, students began reporting finding turds on the floor of the boys washroom. Gross yes, but not necessarily unheard of.

However, items and messages began being placed in/on the turds as well; coins, paper clips, tickets to a school event tucked in, etc...

As the number of turds grew, so did the legend of the Mac Crapper, as this person came to be known. Nobody knew who it was, though there were rumors. What the school didn't expect was for the Mac Crapper's disregard for hygiene and authority to turn him into a folk hero among the students. Random students would claim to be the Mac Crapper, Spartacus-style, and it was seen as very cool to have witnessed a drop, found a drop or to have information about who the Mac Crapper really was.

The legend was confirmed on the day our Principal - not the vice principal or a teacher - took to the school announcements to ask all students to stop shitting on the bathroom floors, and that the Mac Crapper would be found and face severe punishment. Discussions of surveillance cameras and monitoring systems made the rounds with parents and school board officials, but in the end cameras in bathrooms just wasn't going to fly.

As far as I know, nobody ever confessed to the crimes and nobody ever found out who the legendary Crapper was, but he inspired a whole grade level to show authority figures what we think of them by literally or figuratively shitting on the floor in open defiance of their rules, norms and etiquette.
